8th Grade field trip to Angel Island with Ms. Stubben!
It was a beautiful day on the San Francisco Bay!
Ms. Stubben has been teaching the 8th grade immigration block and this field trip helped make history come to life for the students!
The ROCS stuents' rode the ferry over to the island where they discovered and read poems carved into the walls by Asian immigrant detainees as they waited for for their immigration status to be determined.
Angel Island was the 2nd largest immigration entry point behind Ellis Island. However, Angel Island didn’t have the “welcoming” narrative associated with it like Ellis Island did. This was a place of exclusion and interrogation for immigrants from all over the world.
They explored the island on foot and went to an art exhibit at the former detention center, as well as saw the barracks (where people slept 200-300 people per room). What a wonderful way to end the students’ month long block on immigration to deepen thier learning.
How lucky we are to have this hidden historic reference just 2 hours from Ukiah? Thank you to our ROCS parents for driving!

Here is a parent portal from CDE for up to date reuqirements with schools. Today our county health officer will be sending protocol changes, and I will be sure to message about them soon if they are relevant to our school!
