The Lion's Roar
FEBRUARY 2025
Lion Families,
February is here, and hopefully it brings with it some bluer skies and sunnier days! It has been a cold and wet start to the year. I would like to give a huge shout out to Mr. Jordan who has been out front every morning running our car rider line in this weather. For those that drop their student off in the mornings, a high five as you drive by or a “thank you” would be awesome.
February 3rd-7th is school counselor’s week, and we are very blessed to have the best of the best here at Oak Hills. Mrs. Morgan, Mrs. Pryor and Mrs. Sorrell, thank you for caring about, advocating for, listening to, believing in and loving our students and staff at Oak Hills. We are fortunate to have you as part of the Oak Hills family.
It is going to be a busy month with quite a bit happening both during and outside of the school day. One item that your student should have discussed with you is course selection for next school year. Our counselors have been meeting with students to discuss the various class options available to them for the upcoming year. Course selection sheets should have already been turned in for our 6th and 7th graders, so if haven't visited with your student about this, there is still some time to do so and get this turned into his/her counselor. Course selection sheets for our 8th grade students will need be completed and returned by February 10th.
As always, thank you for the tremendous support for Oak Hills that allow great things to happen and lives to be impacted!
Be Lion Bold,
G. Whitehead

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
PARENTING WITH UNIQUENESS
For some of you, your child’s uniqueness is on full display. Maybe you have an artist, a performer, or someone who is bold in their appearance living under your roof. Each day is a new look, a new experience,
or a visual display of who they are and how they are feeling. For others, uniqueness is not something to be desired. You might notice that your child wants to look or dress like their peers, not try anything new, or venture into the unknown. In any case— whether they choose to display it openly or not— each child is wonderfully unique.
This month is a great opportunity for you (and other adults you know and trust) to reinforce your child’s unique gifts, talents, and personality traits that you hope to see grow and expand in them as they mature. It’s also a great time to talk about and point out the unique things about others— their friends, teammates, family members— as a way of reminding their adolescent brains that being different isn’t bad, it’s a part of life!
Questions to consider:
• What unique traits do you like about yourself? Do you think your child knows that? Why or why not?
• How did you become comfortable with parts of who you are? How can you help your child be proud of herself/himself and what she/he brings to the world?
• How do you think learning about others helps you to know more about yourself? How can you apply that in your family life?
Questions to ask your student:
• Think of your three closest friends. What unique things do you like about each of them and why?
• Is there something about our family that makes us unique? What is that trait, and why do you believe we are unique?
• When is it hard to embrace your uniqueness? Why do you think that is?
THE CLINIC CHRONICLE
Hello lions!
Spinal screenings will be conducted this month for 7th grade girls and 8th grade boys.
As we see a rise in illness in all age groups, please do your part by being as proactive as possible to reduce the spread of anything contagious. Please keep students’ home that do not feel well. See the state of Texas Administrative code below for guidance.
Illness Requiring Exclusion from Schools-
Fever, Diarrhea, and Vomiting-exclude until symptom free for 24 hours without use of suppressing medications.
Texas Administrative Code TITLE 25 HEALTH SERVICES PART 1 DEPARTMENT OF STATE HEALTH SERVICES CHAPTER 97 COMMUNICABLE DISEASES SUBCHAPTER A CONTROL OF COMMUNICABLE DISEASES RULE §97.7
*Immunizations-The State of Texas Immunization Law requires a Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) Vaccine (within the last 5 years) and Meningococcal Vaccine for 7th grade. Students will not be able to stay enrolled in school without the proper documentation. If you have a 6th grade student, and they receive any immunizations, please turn the record into the clinic so that their record can be updated and they are not delayed in starting 7th grade.
*If your student has an exemption the original affidavit must be turned into the clinic, not a copy.
*Please ensure your child knows their phone numbers! With the new cell phone policy, we can only help students with numbers we have in Skyward. Please ensure your information is up to date.
*All medications require a doctor’s signature yearly to be administered on campus. This includes prescription and over the counter medications due to a change in the Texas State Nursing laws. Consents are good for the current school year and medications are disposed of if not picked up by the parent. Students are not allowed to transport or pick up medications.
*Health condition paperwork and action plans need to be done EVERY school year. Orders do not carry over to the next school year and health conditions are added yearly to your student’s profile in Skyward for teachers and staff, without documentation we do not add conditions.
Thank you!

MISD Education Foundation Spring Soiree Fundraiser
Through the annual Spring Soiree, the largest fundraiser of the year for the MISDEF, we can grow our giving capacity back to Montgomery Independent School District and support our educators who invest in innovation.
This year's 2025 theme takes us back to 1925, when Montgomery ISD was first established. The Spring Soiree, presented by Stewart Builders, we will be celebrating Montgomery ISD's centennial with a Roaring 20's theme at Margaritaville Lake Resort. Grab your feathers and pin stripes and help the MISD Education Foundation fundraise for another successful year of Educator Grants and promoting creative learning experiences for our students. Here are a few tips to consider:
● Have your student arrive at school on time and attend every class period, especially the official attendance-taking period (9:15 AM JH and HS).
● A student who is tardy to class will be subject to the consequences established at each campus in accordance with the possible consequences in the MISD Student Code of Conduct.
● What happens if your student needs to see a doctor/dentist/therapist? If possible, we encourage you to schedule appointments outside of school hours. Obtain and submit a medical note for documentation to provide to your student’s Campus Attendance Specialist. Documentation is needed so the absence will be coded correctly.
● When you receive an absence notification, please follow up with your student and the campus attendance specialist. If you have documentation for your student’s absence, please submit as early as possible (it is recommended to submit within 48 hours). If you believe a teacher has marked a student incorrectly, please have your student reach out to the teacher of the marked period.
