Give Center West creates a culture of reading on campus
Teachers at GIVE Center West are working to cultivate a culture of reading on campus due to the documented link between low literacy rates and future incarceration. Students, faculty, and stakeholders are engaged in a school-wide book read, that culminated in an author visit on March 13. The chosen text, Marcia Argueta Mickelson's “Where I Belong,” a Pura Belpre Prize Winner, celebrates the Latino cultural experience and was a 2022 Read Across America Recommended Book by the National Education Association. In preparation for Mrs. Argueta Mickelson's visit, the English Language Arts (ELA) department organized a Panini Talk in the media center, echoing a pivotal element of the book. During the discussion, students explored topics such as immigration policies, hyphenated identities, and the American Dream, while enjoying homemade paninis.

Walnut Grove Elementary takes on the NexTrex Recycling Challenge
Walnut Grove Elementary School is actively participating in the NexTrex Recycling Challenge Program, sponsored by Trex®. This initiative aims to promote local recycling efforts, with the promise of a Trex® furniture bench for the school if they can collect over 1,000 pounds of soft film plastics and packaging within 12 months. Since starting the plastics collection in September, the school has been continuously gathering materials. Members of the Curator Club, a student-led group, diligently weighed, recorded, and documented the collected plastic bags during their weekly meetings. To contribute to the challenge, the school plans to deliver the accumulated plastic film to Kroger, one of the participating drop-off retailer locations. The recycling drop-off event took place on March 7 at Kroger, where representatives from Kroger's PR team were present to record the occasion.

Stripling Elementary celebrates STEM with new Garden
Stripling Elementary School is gearing up for its annual STEM Night, on Thursday, March 21, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This year's event will kick off with a groundbreaking ceremony marking the start of construction for the school’s innovative STEM Project-based Learning (PBL) Community Garden. The garden represents a collaborative effort between the school and the community to foster neighborhood cohesiveness through STEM-focused initiatives. The project emphasizes partnerships with the local community to nurture creativity and critical thinking in students. As part of the initiative, students will engage in grade-specific STEM Project Based Learning units, utilizing the engineering design process to contribute to the garden's design, construction, and functionality. For instance, younger students may focus on cultivating a colorful garden with native Georgia plants, while older students might explore the integration of electrical circuits for garden lighting. The long-term vision for the community garden includes addressing sustainability issues, urban food deserts, and food insecurity. With support from organizations such as The Rotary Club of Peachtree Corners, The Norcross Garden Club, UGA Extension Gwinnett, Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful, United Consulting, Paul Duke STEM High School, and Norcross High School, Stripling Elementary students will have invaluable hands-on learning opportunities.
