This year summer offerings for middle school students will be CTE related. That means that retention will NOT offer the option for attending and passing summer school for math and reading to advance to the next grade level. Please talk to your child regarding working hard to pass classes and show growth. Look at your child's F1 column in PowerSchool to see what their final grades look like right now and talk to them about where those grades need to be by the end of the year.

Students in middle school will give their parents lots of reasons for why they don't have their work completed. All students are given time in class to complete their work, and many students do not use that time wisely. Teachers build in time to complete the work during the class period. Talk to your child about the importance of completing and submitting that day's assignments in class being intentional about staying on task and working, even if their friends are not making good choices. Follow that up with checking their grades and assignments regularly.
PARENTS MUST SIGN UP CHILDREN FOR BUS TRANSPORTATION WHEN THEY TRANSITION
PARENTS WITH RISING 6TH OR 9TH GRADE STUDENTS MUST SIGN UP THEIR CHILD FOR TRANSPORTATION

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month
The North Carolina department of Public Safety has great information here explaining and identifying child abuse, how to prevent it, and and alternatives to lashing out at a child.
Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina shares this vital information about the long term effects of child maltreatment:
“Children living with abuse and/or neglect often experience toxic levels of stress. Exposure to toxic stress changes the way a child’s brain is built. The area that controls the fight-or-flight survival mechanism over-develops, while areas that control emotion, cognitive thinking and an understanding of risk and consequence are stunted.
The changes to a child’s brain caused by exposure to toxic stress can lead to significant behavioral changes: The overdeveloped fight-or-flight center seeks calm and pleasure through things like food, drugs and sex. The cognitive center is less prepared for academic success. The part that controls risk or consequence is not prepared to make appropriate decisions.
The Adverse Childhood Experiences Study, or ACE Study, found that children who suffered severe adversity in childhood – violence, abject poverty, substance abuse in the home, child abuse and neglect – were far more likely to suffer long-term intellectual, behavioral, and physical and mental health problems.
Problems now concretely linked to child abuse and neglect include behavioral and achievement problems in school; heart, lung and liver disease; obesity and diabetes; depression, anxiety disorders, and increased suicide attempts; increased criminal behaviors, illicit drug use and alcohol abuse; increased risky sexual behavior and unintended pregnancies; and other problems.
To read more about the ACE Study and how to help children at risk for ACES check out this from the CDC.
If you are concerned about a child being abused or neglected, please contact our local Department of Social Services at 919-496-5721 to discuss your concerns. and report the possible abuse or neglect. For more information about recognizing and reporting child maltreatment, click here click here.

Good evening we are in the home stretch. The plan is to finish the unit early May. The test date is TBD right now based on students needing a little more time with their planet trading cards they are working on. It will be the first week of May though.
We have put a pin in SEL lately trying to make sure we focus on our science lessons. I do have plans to finish up our current SEL unit after we take our final unit test. The unit we have been working on for SEL is all about social conflict and making amends.
Please check in with your child and see if they need school supplies like paper and pencils.
MATH: MR. MITCHELL
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope this message finds you in good spirits! I am thrilled to share some exciting updates from our vibrant 6th-grade class at Franklinton Middle School.

Greetings,
Daily we are prepping to get ready for the End of Grade Test. With the scores of the NC-Check-ins I am confident the students will do well. We start each class with a vocab warm up, this is really helping them with using their Context Clues to figure out words and their meaning. We are also Correcting the Check In. Not only are we correcting, we are Analyzing whether our answers are right or wrong. Assignments/Stations are very Standard Specific. We are covering the tested Standards. Please Continue to push I-Ready. Any questions or concerns please reach out. Thank you all.
SOCIAL STUDIES: MR. CALDERON
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope you had an amazing last couple of weeks. We are on our final stretch for our school year. The lesson this week focuses on the Age of Exploration, the time when the first Europeans came to the land we know now as America. Next week we'll be learning about the Natives who lived in Mesoamerica and how their society developed and changed after colonization. After that we will have the periods of Renaissance and Reformation.
As always I ask you to talk to your children about finishing the work in class. I don’t give homework but if a student doesn’t finish the work in class they would have to finish it at home. Please encourage them to finish the school year strong.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at luiscalderon@fcschools.net
Very respectfully,
Mr. Calderón

Happy Springtime! Our students are off to a great start for Quarter 4. This week in math we finish Unit 6, Geometric and Measurement Reasoning. The students have learned to find the circumference and area of a circle, how to build and draw polygons with given conditions, and how to find volume and surface area of non-rectangular prisms.
Next week we begin, Unit 3-Probabilistic Reasoning. This unit requires students to recall what they have learned about fractions, ratios, decimals, and percentages. All students are encouraged to participate in class discussions and ask questions.
Tuesday, April 23rd, students will take the last Math NC Check-In before the final EOG exam. In class, we have discussed the importance of completing the I-Ready assignments each week. The I-Ready assignments offer great opportunities for students to review what they have already learned in class or gain a better understanding of the material they may have missed.
Things to remember:
~Class attendance is important
~Remember the school and classroom rules. (Exhibit responsible behavior at all times)
~Bring your materials (Chromebooks(charged), notebooks, and pencils) to class daily.
~Get a good night's rest and come to class prepared to work.
~Math I-Ready assignments are important. Believe in yourself, you can do it!
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at litishajenkins@fcschools.net.

Let's Finish the School Year Strong!
Dear Parents,
As we approach the final weeks of the 2023-24 school year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the progress we have made and the exciting opportunities that lie ahead. It's important for us to work together to help our students finish strong!
In our Earth science class, we will continue to explore crucial topics such as pollution, weather, and climate. We'll delve into how each of us can make a difference through reducing, reusing, and recycling. These lessons are not only pivotal in understanding our planet but also in fostering responsible behaviors that our students can carry into the future.
To ensure that your student stays on track, I encourage you to regularly check Powerschool for updates on assignments and grades. It's challenging for students to catch up if they fall behind, so staying informed can really make a difference. Remember, all assignments are posted on Canvas, and students are expected to complete any work they miss due to absences. Additionally, any assignments not finished during class must be completed at home and turned in the following school day.
Together, we can support your student in ending the year positively. Your involvement and encouragement at home are key components of their success. Thank you for your continued support and collaboration.
Let's make these last few weeks as productive and enjoyable as possible!
Warm regards,
Ms. Brackett
SOCIAL STUDIES: MR. JONES
Hello Parents and Guardians and welcome to the final stretch! As Q4 continues, please make sure your student stays on top of their work. Grades are updated consistently in Powerschool and are generally put in the day they are assigned. If there is ever a “0” in the gradebook, it is because the work was not turned in and the due date has come and gone.
When it comes to the final stretch in the classroom, students are consistently reminded of classroom expectations. This is not the time for us to let up on any rules and will not allow for them to begin to slack and settle for less. The more that you as guardians work with us, the more successful your students will be.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at hunterjones@fcschools.net
ELA: MS. BAECHLE
Growth Accountability Agreement:
I will complete daily work (assigned in class)
I will finish any work that was not completed in class for homework
I will come to class prepared (work completed and a charged chromebook)
I will not disrupt the learning environment, or others
I will check Canvas daily for updated assignments and due dates
I will check Powerschool regularly for grades and missing assignments
I will always try my best
I will ask for further support from my teacher is I don't understand an assignment (tutoring)**
I will maintain a growth mind-set for my academic and personal growth and goals!!
Expectations:
Update: We have been working on improved behavior in ALL classes. Students are to come to class on time, prepared and ready to work. If they are not following the non-negotiables, they will receive a warning to correct their chosen behavior before they are sent to ALC with a write-up and a parent contact. I have seen improvement in behaviors the past week and expect that to continue with consistency and daily practice.
Remember that each quarter every student begins with a 100% in their classes. What they decide to do with their grades and achievements are up to them.
Curriculum: We continue our final novel of “A Long Walk to Water.” Students are focusing on: symbolism, character point of view, and analysis of textual quotes. This is done through utilizing classroom anchor charts, various graphic organizers and station work to enhance challenging standards including: language, reading for information (NF/Theme), and reading for Literature (F/central idea). We are working to utilize data from the third Check-in in order to close any gaps in comprehension and skill-sets prior to the EOG’s.
This Week: Recently, students took a “End-of-Unit” Assessment where they were to select and analyze quotes, make textual connections among characters, and respond to a writing prompt while incorporating textual evidence. Students continue to experience weekly (2x) station rotations to enhance various language skills/standards, as well as working collaboratively with peers in an environment where the teacher(s) observe and students lead the discussion and work completion.
Next Week: We will be nearing the end of our final text “ALWTW,” and beginning our final essay. Students will have the opportunity to compare and contrast our final text with a text we read earlier in the year. Students continue to utilize a series of skills including: color-coded annotation, a strong focus on content vocabulary, a variety of written responses, utilizing a variety of graphic-organizers, anchor texts, etc.
We will also be watching an anchor film in the upcoming weeks. More info and a permission slip to follow*
Q4 Project:
This is our final project of the year. Students will be provided a choice board and rubric with explicit directions. If they have a Google slides or a writing piece they select there are additional directions for what is to be completed. The hope is that they have fun, express their voices, and be creative for their final project!!
The entirety of the project will be due on Friday, May 24th.

Homework: Students should expect homework two to three times weekly in order to continue to develop their skill-sets and to see growth. Please ask your child what work they have for homework, or have not completed on a regular basis to help keep them on track. Work is updated regularly for access on Canvas. Grades are also updated weekly and viewable on Powerschool. Students should expect classwork (homework if not completed) and study guides to maintain an understanding of reading both inside and outside of class on a weekly basis. The application process is so critical to close gaps in comprehension and to apply to later content**
Grades: Student grades are present on Canvas, and are now viewable to students and guardians on Powerschool. Students are expected to check their grades on a regular basis and reach out to their teacher for make-up work, or additional time to complete an assignment if they have been absent. I allow a one week timeframe to make up work before an assignment becomes a zero.
I-Ready: Is a proven and resourceful data-driven program that allows teachers to see tri-annually where a student is at in their comprehension level by grade lexile. It also allows teachers to view the data and see where students have mastered a skill, and what areas need additional practice. A students growth or lack thereof on their pathway is a factor in potential summer learning or even retention ol their grade, which is why it is so essential to their weekly learning**
Students are expected to complete two passing lessons from their pathway each week. In addition, they will be assigned “teacher assigned lessons” at times to enhance what is being taught in class, which is to be completed by the end of the week for a grade. The teacher chosen assignment will focus on a skill-set currently being taught or reviewed in class in order to strengthen a specific skill.
We continue to utilize I-Ready incentives for every two passing lessons per ELA and Math each week. This incentive began right before the holiday break. Students have an opportunity to receive an incentive of their choice for their hard work.
Tutoring: Tutoring occurs weekly each: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:30-5:00 pm in the cafeteria. Please ask your student about a tutoring contract to view and return attached below: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KHba-Ciy9XIx3mbAu6Ki7mwwocNfgA1dOxvI7Qcg3V8/edit?usp=sharing
I will be there on Mondays and Thursdays for additional support in ELA.
Students have worked hard thus far during Q4 and their efforts and growth have shown! The goal is to maintain that focus and effort for the remainder of the school year! Keep up the good work :)
Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any further questions or concerns: kimberlybaechle@fcschools.net
GRADE 8 TEAM
MATH: MS. CUNNINGHAM
Can you believe we are in the final stretch and are so close to the finish line?
4th quarter is underway and everyone is feeling the spring fever.
This week, Monday, April 15th- Thursday, April 18th, we are on the remediation schedule from 8:30 to 9:30am for math with our 3rd math check-in happening next week on Tuesday, April 23rd.
- Ms. Head, our science teacher, is teaching NC.8.F.2-compare properties of two linear functions each represented in a different way
- Mr. Downum, our SS teacher, is teaching NC.8.EE.7-solve real-world and mathematical problems by writing and solving equations and inequalities in one variable, recognize linear equations in one variable as having one solution, many solutions, or no solutions, solve linear equations and inequalities including multi-step equations and inequalities with the same variable on both sides.
- Ms. Frost, our ELA teacher, and I are both teaching NC.8.SP.1-construct and interpret scatter plots for bivariate measurement data to investigate patterns of association between two quantities, investigate and describe patterns such as clustering, outliers, positive or negative association, linear association, and nonlinear association.
- NC.8.SP.2-model the relationship between bivariate quantitative data to: informally fit a straight line for a scatter plot that suggests a linear association, and informally assess the model fit by judging the closeness of the data points to the line.
Please make sure your child is at school on time this week so he/she gets the most out of their time, as well as being to school on time on Tuesday, check-in day.
Begin preparing now by eating a good breakfast, getting a good night’s sleep, dressing in layers, and having a positive attitude with positive thoughts. Encourage your child to do their best on the test, not to rush through just randomly choosing any letter/number as their answer. As this assessment will gauge how he/she will perform on the end of year assessment. Please encourage your child to take the test seriously.
In class, we will be finishing up Unit 3b this week with the assessment on Wednesday, April 17th. We will be moving into our next unit, Unit 4-Statistical and Probabilistic Reasoning, which will carry us through the end of April into the beginning of May. In this unit, students analyze bivariate data—using scatter plots and fitted lines to analyze numerical data, and using two-way tables, bar graphs, and segmented bar graphs to analyze categorical data.
Vocabulary
Scatter plot, outlier, positive association, negative association, two-way table, segmented bar graph, relative frequency, quantitative, categorical
Throughout the Unit
All students actively engaged in class discourse and persevering through points of difficulty, challenge, or error.
All students revising their thinking using feedback and through conversations with peers and teachers.
All students using paper and geometry tools* to organize or visualize their thinking and record key information when needed.
All students using multiple sentences to construct, critique, and defend their thinking.
Key Math Practice Standard(s)
MP2: Identify outliers and clustering in scatter plots and interpret the slope of a line of fit in context.
MP4: Draw and use a line of fit to predict values.
MP5: Create scatter plots, two-way tables, bar graphs, relative frequency tables, and segmented bar graphs to represent data and notice patterns.
Any questions or concerns, please email me at michellecunningham@fcschools.net
SOCIAL STUDIES: MR. DOWNUM
We are almost at the finish line, and I think the teachers are just as excited as the students are! We have the final math check in next week, so this week is all about math remediation. Please make sure that the students are coming in with charged Chromebooks. We know that the kids have got this and we are going to knock this check in out of the park.
In social studies we are working on The Roaring 20’s and focusing on The Harlem Renaissance for the next few days. The Next unit will be The Great Depression and maybe this year I can finally make it to WWII. Please ensure that students are doing all work, because when an assignment is locked I will not reopen it, that assignment is just a zero.
SCIENCE: MS. HEAD
In Science we are working on a review of Matter and other standards related to the lowest scores from the check-in’s this year. We will start our last unit next Tuesday on Ecosystems. Our next vocabulary quiz will be Thursday, May 2nd on Ecosystem words. Our Ecosystems end unit test will be Thursday, May 9th. We will then be reviewing for the Science EOG which will be May 24th. Please encourage your student to check over their work in Canvas for completion and study the vocabulary words in Quizlet. In the Second Step lessons, we are going to finish the unit on “Thoughts, Emotions & Decisions” and start the next on “Managing Relationships & Social Conflict”. Please let me know if any questions come up (my email: nadinehead@fcschools.net). Thank you!
ELA: MS. FROST
Parents, we are on the home stretch and I want your child, most importantly, to show growth and proficiency on the Reading (EOG) End of Grade ELA State Assessment at the close of the school year.
All Grades are Up-to-Date in PowerSchool: Please check PowerSchool frequently to ensure your child is completing assignments.
New Unit: The Civil Rights Movement and the Little Rock Nine
We have begun a new unit of study using the text titled, Little Rock Girl 1957 by Shelley Tougas.. Students will study the U.S. civil rights movement, focusing particularly on The Little Rock Nine. They will consider the essential question “How have the Civil War Amendments strengthened American democracy?” as they learn about segregation, the civil rights movement, The Little Rock Nine, and the role various mediums shape differing perceptions of historical events (photographs, song lyrics, videos, informational articles, court documents, and a multitude of informational texts).
There are additional guiding essential questions students will refer to when engaged in lessons and completing assignments.
Standard RI.8.3 How can I make connections with different texts about the same historical event and draw my own conclusions based on text evidence?
Standard RI.8.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text. Students will refer to the five types of context clues (IDEAS).
Standard ```RI.8.6 Determine an author’s point of view (POV) or purpose (PIE) in a text and analyze how the author acknowledges and responds to conflicting evidence or viewpoints.
ELECTIVES TEAM

Look for our display in May at the Spring Concert and Art Show.
BAND: MS. BROWN
We are so close to the end of the year, which means we are quickly approaching so many awesome things in our band program. I have broken up the grade levels below as each group has different things they will be doing in the upcoming weeks.
8th Grade Band: The 8th grade band students are preparing for their North Carolina Symphony trip on April 25th during school. This is an amazing opportunity for your students to see a live, professional rehearsal and get to have a question and answer time with top-notch musicians. This trip is free for your students and there will be lunch provided, free of charge. We will be going to Franklinton Park afterward to have lunch and celebrate them for their accomplishments the last three years in band. They have worked so hard this semester and I look forward to this amazing trip with them. Please be sure students have turned in their permission forms by April 22nd at the latest.
7th Grade Band: The 7th grade band students are preparing for their half-day field trip to Franklinton High School on April 30th to see world-renowned jazz musician John Brown from Duke University and his band perform a concert. This will be from 8:30 am until 11:30 am (students will be back in time for lunch). This amazing opportunity has been sponsored by our county and we are very appreciative of them for that. Students have permission forms so please make sure they are signed and returned to me no later than April 22nd. Also, please don’t forget about the email I sent regarding marching band at Franklinton High School. This is a great opportunity for your student to try out marching band while they are still in 8th grade and make the high school transition even easier when they go to 9th grade. Feel free to reach out to Meredith Bryan (Franklinton High School band director) at meredithbryan@fcschools.net with any additional questions.
6th Grade Band: 6th grade band students have been growing so much on their instruments and working hard to better themselves as musicians. 6th grade will have a portion on the concert where they are playing real pieces instead of basic warm-ups like they did at the winter celebration, which demonstrates the growth they have shown this year. I know they are excited to showcase what they have been working on and all that they have accomplished.
8th Grade Music Appreciation: students are working on their Broadway unit right now, where we review and discuss the impact of Broadway and its historical roots in America. Students also get to demonstrate their creativity and will be working on their final project for this unit soon, which is making a “bare-bones” Broadway play. I am very excited to see all they will come up with! After this unit, they will be working on their instrument unit, which introduces instrument families and the different types of instruments that are played throughout various genres of music. Students will be participating in an instrument building assignment, which is always one of my favorite assignments throughout the year!
*** Spring Celebration Information: Our Spring Celebration (which includes band, drama, and art) is on May 16th at 6:30 pm in the FMS Auditorium. As Ms. Boardman mentioned above, we are looking for parents to sponsor pizzas for our students who stay after school to help set up on that day. If you are wanting to do that, please sign up on the SignUp Genius and then send the money in with your student/drop it off in the front office. All the money will go towards purchasing the pizzas for the kids. Additionally, we are looking for people to donate snacks and refreshments for the art show that occurs after the concert. Please sign up on the SignUp Genius if this is something you are interested in providing.
Lastly, we will be having a raffle/auction during the art show portion of the celebration. There are items that have been donated and continue to be donated by generous businesses and these will be set up in the cafeteria. Raffle tickets will be on sale before and during intermission of the concert portion. If you purchase raffle tickets, you can then fill it out with your name and put it in the corresponding box of the prize you are wanting to win. Drawings for the prize will take place at the end of the art show. If you would like to donate anything to our raffle, please email me at annabrown@fcschools.net for more information.
I know this is a lot of information but I am so excited for all this semester has brought and continues to bring for our students. They are learning and growing so much and I am so honored to have a front row seat. As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns you may have. I look forward to seeing you all at the Spring Celebration on May 16th!

WHY DON'T TEACHERS CONTACT PARENTS WHEN THEIR CHILD IS STRUGGLING ACADEMICALLY?
Teachers do contact parents, and things are not the way they used to be. Teachers are expected to contact parents of students who are failing their class using the Grade Alert forms that go out mid-quarter, and the At-Risk letters that go home with report cards 2nd and 3rd quarter. Teachers are also expected to grade assignments that are handed in by the due date in a timely manner so that parents can see how their child is doing in real time in Canvas and PowerSchool.
PARENTS CAN ALWAYS KNOW HOW THEIR CHILD IS DOING ACADEMICALLY WITHOUT WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO CONTACT THEM
Parents, you have the ability to access PowerSchool and Canvas to see how your child is doing anytime you like. Parents no longer need to wait to hear from someone. You can see what is going on right now. Once you sign up to be a Parent observer for Canvas and PowerSchool you have access to grades and assignments, and you can see what has been submitted for grading and what has not been completed. Students in middle school are making choices about the work they do or don't do. We need parents to stay on top of what their child is or isn't doing so that they can address issues early in the year and early in the quarter.
If you ask your child how they are doing and they tell you they are doing great, you can immediately check for yourself and praise them or have that conversation about why they are not doing well. It doesn't take much time, and our students whose parents and guardians are checking their PowerSchool and Canvas regularly tend to have higher grades and better outcomes.
Just taking the time to get connected and working with your child to support them in meeting their academic expectations makes a huge difference for students in middle school. Your support is appreciated!

SAFETY IS A PRIORITY AT FRANKLINTON MIDDLE SCHOOL!
PLEASE NOTE:
Students are not allowed to leave the school building during the school day on their own. Parents and guardians must come into the main office and sign their child out if that child will leave the building for any reason.
If the person coming in to pick up your child is not on the list in PowerSchool, they will not be allowed to leave the building with your child unless you call the office to give us permission to have someone else sign your child out.
Please do not call the main office to have your child sent out - we will inform you that you need to come into the office in person and sign your child out.
Thank you for helping us to keep every student safe while on our campus!
