GLENDALE ELEMENTARY MARCH NEWS
#ONE PERSON CAN CHANGE THE FUTURE- BE THE ONE
Hello Glendale Families!
I had the pleasure of attending the Elementary Principals Conference back in mid-February. At the conference, Joe Schmit shared his new book "The Right Thing To Do" The Joe Mauer Story. Every attendee received a free book from Joe Schmit and I would like to share it with all of you.
Joe is a sport's nut! He loves all sport but baseball most of all. When Joe accidently hits a baseball through his neighbor's window, he learns a valuable lesson: While sports are important, choosing kindness is always the right thing to do.
Follow former Minnesota Twins Joe Mauer's story as he grows from a child athlete to a high-school superstar and eventually becomes one of the best-ever Major League Baseball players- and leans to be a good friend along the way.

DIGITAL WELL BEING TIPS
What kind of digital footprint is your child leaving behind? Help your child post, comment and upload responsibly using these helpful tips:
Be a role model. Before you post a photo of your kid on social media, ask if it's OK to share. Not only will you give them control over their own digital footprint, you'll also be showing them what you expect them to do with others' photos.
Use privacy settings. Together, go through all the settings on new apps to make sure you both know what information your kids are sharing. It’s better to share very little, especially when they are first starting out.
Use a celebrity as an example. With older kids, choose a celebrity or another famous person and look through their Twitter or Instagram posts with your kid. Discuss your impressions of them based on what they post. Ask your kid what kind of image they'd like to project online.

ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES
SPECIALIST SNIP-ITS
During Kindness Week K-2 students practiced folding paper to cut a heart shape and collage it for friends and family members. Our winter landscape paintings didn't inspire much real snow, but we used our memory and imagination to make a scene of fun on the snowy land. During our last class in February students are using rubber stamps to make ABC repeating patterns and learning about many kinds of printmaking.
Grade 3 has been focused on William "Snowflake" Bentley, a pioneer of photographing snowflakes. Snowflakes are being constructed with wood bits, using a hexagon as a template-just like the shape of real snowflakes. We took time away from construction to paint a winter landscape and do a little preparation for ceramics by making creations with plasticine.
The 4th and 5th grade masks are complete and on their way home! Many families admired the creative work during conferences. During Kindness Week students made Pop Art Hearts to share with family and friends. In preparation for up-coming ceramics lessons we learned to play "Clay Master," using plasticine to model various objects as the timer counted down. Definitely our new favorite game!
MEDIA-
4th and 5th grade finished up their All About Me coding projects and shared them with their tables. They turned out great! They also got to do a "Book Tasting". where they rotated around sampling and reading summaries of our new books. Lastly, they wrote book reviews of books they wanted to recommend.
3rd grade started practicing coding with "Loops," which allow them to use repeat blocks to repeat patterns in their code. They then moved on to Nested Loops which is a loop inside of another loop. Tricky stuff but they were great at working together and problem solving the tough lessons.
2nd grade learned how to code with the Artist tool. They were able to create shapes and images which they enjoyed! They then moved on to learning about "Loops," which allow them to use repeat blocks to repeat patterns in their code.
K and 1st grade continued their work In Kodable, practicing debugging and working to problem solve trickier levels. They have been rockstars!
PHY ED-
Hello Glendale Families, the month of February flew by. Hopefully you were able to enjoy some outside family time this month. We were concentrating on Basketball skills in Physical Education class this month. Lots of fun dribbling and shooting games. PLEASE HELP YOUR CHILD REMEMBER THEIR TENNIS SHOES ON THEIR PHYSICAL EDUCATION DAYS.
MUSIC-
We’ve been busy making all sorts of music in the Glendale music room! Kindergarten has been continuing reading rhythms and have played those rhythms on instruments. 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders are busy working on their May concert music! 4th grade has been learning the basics of the recorder and they started their first song- Hot Cross Buns. 5th grade has been working on ukulele, and sound awesome on all of our fun songs!
COLD WEATHER/ OUTDOOR APPAREL
Dressing your child with appropriate outdoor clothing (coats, hats, gloves, etc) helps students have a fun time in all seasons of weather. **Students will always go outdoors for recess unless the "feels like" temperature falls below -5 degrees on cold days or it is steadily raining. We have had some unseasonably warm winter weather this year, but are reminding all students that coats must still be worn for now. Please help to make sure your child is prepared for outdoor recess each day!
**IMPORTANT: BE SURE TO LABEL YOUR CHILD’S OUTDOOR GEAR-JACKET, MITTENS, HAT, ETC. TO HELP PREVENT THEM FROM GETTING LOST!!

NOTE FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE
It is important to periodically check your child’s scalp and hair for signs of lice. Regular
inspection is an essential step in managing and preventing infestation.
*There are no school exclusions for lice.
Tips for parents at home:
• Talk to your child about not sharing personal items such as combs, brushes, hats and avoiding
head-to-head contact with others.
• Talk to your child about avoiding head-to-head (hair-to-hair) contact during play and other
activities at home, school, and elsewhere (taking selfies, sports activities, playground, slumber
parties, camp).
• Keep long hair tied back and/or braided can be a helpful strategy to decrease hair-to-hair
contact.
• Check your child’s head before and after sleep-over experiences.
EXTRA COLTHES FOR ALL GRADES NEEDED: The weather is getting nicer and it can get muddy outside. The health office has limited supply of clothes so please send your kiddos with an extra set of clothing to change into incase they need it. Thank you!
