HAPPY, DEAF AWARENESS MONTH & HISPANIC HERITAGE, MONTH!
Principal Pyles' Message...
September was National Deaf Awareness Month!
I hope you had a chance to enjoy the deaf and hard-of-hearing exhibit at the first floor rotunda and see the “Why I sign” video segments on the morning announcements. Here at Rockville High School, we are committed to fostering understanding and support to ensure that all students receive the recognition and resources they deserve.
October is Hispanic Heritage Month!
“Your individuality is important, but so is belonging. Recognize the parts of your culture that have shaped your past, and the parts you want to carry with you into the future."
(Sol Peralta)
Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15) is a time to reflect on the importance of the Hispanic and Latinx culture and contributions. It is also a time to observe and grow together while supporting our Hispanic friends and colleagues. Check out the photo exhibit of the Latiné RHS staff next to the College and Career center. Next make your way to the media center to the Hispanic Heritage Month exhibit of artifacts and literature. Showcase your Latinidad during Rockville High School’s Spirit Week (10/7-10/11). Then join us for our annual celebration, "Noche Latina", on October 16th, where you can enjoy delicious Latin food, music and entertainment. We hope you take some time to enjoy some of the festivities and events hosted by the Latinx Student Union Club. Let's connect with one another this month and throughout the school year to celebrate our rich and diverse backgrounds.
For more information about the Hispanic Heritage Month festivities, please contact Latinx Student Union Club sponsors at Dulce_M_Carrillo@mcpsmd.org and Luisa_F_Chaney@mcpsmd.org.

ATTENDANCE...
ATTENDANCE updates
At Rockville High School we aim to illuminate the multiple pathways to success for all our students. Every path begins the same: Showing up. We support our students in regular, timely attendance as a requirement for success well beyond high school. Approximately 10% of students are arriving between 7:45am -8:00am, late to 1st period each day. Students must be present and available for learning for every period, beginning at 7:45am. Please support our efforts by:
Communicating the importance of attendance with your students
Monitoring your students' attendance via ParentVue
Coordinating a morning routine to arrive at school prior to 7:40am
Providing appropriate documentation for late arrivals and absences
CELL PHONE EXPECTATIONS...
NEW - "BELL TO BELL, NO CELL" PERSONAL MOBILE DEVICE POLICY...
**NEW** - "BELL TO BELL, NO CELL"
Rockville High School is committed to supporting student learning in a positive learning environment. As a reminder, during classroom/instructional time, cell phones, earpods, headphones, and other personal mobile devices must be put away in a backpack or bag.
Students may use their devices before and after school, during lunch, and during class transitions only. Again, personal mobile devices may NOT be used during classes. Parents may contact their children during the designated time periods, or contact the main office if they need to speak with their child urgently.
WHY Bell to Bell, No Cell?
- To Improve Focus and Attention: Without the distraction of cell phones, students are more likely to stay engaged with the lesson. This can lead to better understanding and retention of the material, as students can concentrate fully on the content being taught without interruptions from notifications or the temptation to check social media.
- To Enhance Classroom Interaction: With phones out of sight, students are more likely to participate in class discussions, collaborate with peers, and engage in hands-on activities. This fosters a more interactive and dynamic learning environment, where students can benefit from real-time feedback and peer-to-peer learning.
- To Improve Academic Performance: Reducing the opportunity for distractions and cheating can contribute to more accurate assessments of students' abilities. As a result, teachers can better gauge student understanding and provide targeted support, which can lead to improved academic performance and a more honest evaluation of students' progress.
Thank you for partnering with the school staff to reinforce the importance of engaging actively in learning during classes and of using personal mobile devices during designated times only.
**NEW** - Implementation of Cell Phone LOCKED POUCHES begins OCTOBER 7th...
Cell Phone Pouches will be enforced beginning MONDAY, OCTOBER 7TH!!!
Our RHS students have adjusted very well to our "Bell to Bell, No Cell" Policy. Our goals continues to be to foster digital responsibility in our students, preparing them for success in college, careers, and their communities. In support of this goal, we will begin "Cell Phone Pouch" implementation on Monday, October 7th. Our "Bell to Bell, No Cell" policy has helped to minimize distractions and enhance our student's learning environment.
To help enforce the policy, as outlined below, we will use locked pouches for students to securely store their cell phones and personal electronic devices (PMDs) for the remainder of the day. Students will maintain possession of their PMD's when in locked pouches. They will be able to unlock them at the end of the school day.
Here’s how the policy will be enforced, with specific consequences for repeated infractions per period:
- First Time: The student will receive a warning to put the cell phone/pmd in a backpack or bag.
- Second Time: The student's device will be placed in a locked pouch for the remainder of the school day in the student's possession and unlocked after dismissal.
- Third Time: The device will be automatically placed in the locked pouch for the remainder of the school day in the student's possession and unlocked after dismissal.
- Fourth Time: The device will be automatically placed in the locked pouch for the remainder of the school day in the student's possession and unlocked after dismissal, and a phone call will be made to the parent or guardian to discuss the situation.
- Fifth Time: The device will be placed in the locked pouch for the remainder of the school day in the office's possession and unlocked & returned to the student after dismissal and the student will receive an administrative referral to address ongoing issues.
We appreciate your support and partnership in helping us promote responsible digital behavior. By working together, we can create a more focused and productive learning environment for all students.

ROCKVILLE HIGH SCHOOL PARENT ORGANIZATIONS...
PTSA & PADRES LATINOS
PADRES LATINOS NEWS:
Padres Latinos en Acción (PLA) will be meeting Tuesday, October 22nd, from 7:00 to 8:00pm in the Rockville High School room 1050. Please join the Rockville High School administration and staff to share information about school events, academics, scholarships, and well-being. Please reach out to Monica_Kellison@mcpsmd.org or Jennifer_Bado-Aleman@mcpsmd.org for more information and/or if you would like to volunteer as a parent leader.
PTSA NEWS:
This year, our PTSA theme is "Lean into Rockville", and we need your help!
We’re asking for a simple yet impactful contribution: a $10 donation. This will help fund staff appreciation initiatives and essential end-of-year activities that make Rockville High such a special place. Our goal is 800 donations of $10 each! We have had 57 donations, we still need 734! Every dollar counts, and together, we can make a meaningful difference. To donate, click [here] .
We need volunteers. Our school thrives on the dedication and involvement of our parent community, and several key volunteer roles need new leadership this year. Don’t worry—many of these roles can be shared among a committee. By leaning in together, we can continue to offer the programs and support our students deserve. Thank you to the parents that leaned in to create our NAACP Committee. If the other roles are not filled by the end of September, we will have to cancel the After Prom Party and the After School Cafe. View our volunteer needs [here]
The future of a 30+year tradition at Rockville is in the balance. The After Prom Party has been keeping Rockville students safe for a long time. The Class of 2025 deserves this same opportunity. We are looking for Senior parent volunteers to plan the 2025 After Prom Party. We are looking for all grade level parents to help plan fundraisers like the Mom Prom to raise the $10,000 needed to pay for The After Prom Party. We are currently selling JackPot Raffle Tickets. For $100, you will be eligible for monthly prizes totalling over $200 each. Raffles are being sold September 13 to October 10. STUDENT INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE COMMUNITY...
Message from Ms. James (Internship/Apprenticeship Coordinator)
I wanted to let the community know about the opportunity to host an intern in your business. An internship is a directed, practical learning experience, outside of the normal classroom setting, in which students sharpen skills, gain experience through structured and monitored work-based learning experiences. Students apply academic concepts, mastery instructional objectives in a professional setting, and develop a direct primary approach to identify organizational operation of local professional companies. We are looking for businesses in the community to partner with us and our internship program. We are particularly interested in the fields of electrician, fine arts, psychology, engineering, the medical field, law firm, criminology/police officer, mechanic, vet office, restaurant business, and the list goes on and on. If you are interested in partnering with us, please contact Julie_a_james@mcpsmd.org. Thank you for your time and consideration.
