CHPS Update | March 20, 2025
Superintendent Stenvik & Local #710 President, Daniel Honigs Testify at Capitol
Superintendent Zena Stenvik and Local 710 President Daniel Honigs provided testimony at the Minnesota House of Representatives Education Finance Committee about the Compensatory Aid calculation.
Columbia Heights Public Schools is facing an unprecedented loss of nearly $3.7 million dollars in Compensatory aid, which is over $1,000 per student, due to a change in how compensatory aid is calculated. More information can be found on our website under District News.
CHHS Hosted 2025 Showcase
The CHHS Speech Team held their 2025 Showcase this week!
30 of our high school Speech students performed parts of their speeches that they have been competing with throughout the year to share with family and friends!
Next up... the Section Tournament!
Congratulations to the Cast and Crew of Annie Jr.!
A big thank you to our directors and other musical staff for all of their hard work and dedication to the production. And thanks to all of our Hylander Community who came out to support the show!
These middle schoolers performed three amazing shows and CHPS is so proud to have such talented students involved in extracurriculars at our middle school!
Absences: Excused vs. Unexcused
Wondering what is an excused absence vs. an unexcused absence?
To be considered an excused absence, the student’s parent or legal guardian will be asked to verify, perhaps in writing, the reason for the student’s absence from school. If a child has been absent three or more times due to medical reasons, a note from a physician or a licensed mental health professional stating that the student cannot attend school is an excused absence.
The following reasons are excused absences:
- Illness
- Serious illness in the student's immediate family
- A death or funeral in the student's immediate family or of a close friend or relative
- Family emergencies
- Medical, dental or orthodontic treatment, or a counseling appointment with reasonable travel time
- Court appearances occasioned by family or personal action.
- Religious instruction not to exceed three hours in any week
- Emergency conditions such as fire, flood, storm
- Official school field trip
- Removal of a student pursuant to a suspension. Suspensions are to be handled as excused absences and students will be permitted to complete make-up work within a reasonable amount of time according to school building procedure
- Visiting a parent or legal guardian who is an active duty member in any military branch of the United States
- A student’s condition that requires ongoing treatment for a mental health diagnosis
The following are examples of absences which will not be excused:
- Truancy. An absence by a student which was not approved by
the parent/guardian and/or the school district - Any absence in which the student failed to comply with any reporting requirements
of the school district's and school building’s attendance procedures of notifying the school within 48 hours - Any other absence not included under the attendance procedures set out in this policy
