Pivot to Remote Exercise Message to Families
Dear Families,
New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) are dedicated to ensuring that every student can learn uninterrupted, including during disruptions caused by building closures. To accomplish this goal, we want to make sure that our students and staff are prepared for successful remote learning. NYCPS has developed a practice plan to support and improve schools' readiness in the event a transition to remote learning is necessary. District 31 has been selected to participate in this technology readiness activity on November 6, 2024.
What does that mean for your child?
Your child will still come to school.
The teachers will assign a remote homework task for students to complete at home. Please ensure your child completes the digital activity at home on the above date.
If your child does not have access to either a personal internet-enabled device or a NYCPS-issued device at home, be sure to reach out to your school to request a device.
Thank you. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher or Parent Coordinator Sharon Fink at (718) 351-1155.

NYC Reads & Books of the Month at PS 23
This year, District 31 is fully implementing NYC Reads, and as part of the district, PS 23 is using HMH's Into Reading program to teach English Language Arts (ELA)βincluding reading, writing, and listening & speaking skills. The goal of NYC Reads is to help students become strong, confident readers through the "Science of Reading."
What is the Science of Reading?
The "Science of Reading" refers to a large body of research that guides how we can best teach reading and writing. Itβs not a one-size-fits-all method or tied to a specific program. While phonics is a key part of literacy, the Science of Reading emphasizes five essential concepts for effective reading and writing:
- Understanding letter sounds
- Decoding words
- Building vocabulary
- Reading fluently
- Comprehending text
What does this mean for PS 23?
Last year, our staff trained and prepared for this shift, piloting select units towards the end of the 2023-2024 school year. Now, as we move into full implementation, every teacher continues to receive training, and weβve partnered with an HMH coach and a Fundations coach to guide us.
Fundations Overview
Fundations is a multi-sensory program focusing on phonics, spelling, and handwriting for early learners (K-3). It helps students develop key literacy skills like recognizing letters, decoding words, and spelling, which are foundational for reading fluency and writing proficiency. Our school has used Fundations for over 15 years, and it remains a valuable part of our ELA instruction.
Books of the Month
At PS 23, we operate with the belief that every child has genius. Our adult lighthouse team selects the Books of the Month with this in mind, aligning them with our 7 Habits and Leader in Me initiatives. These books help reinforce key virtues and habits, while also integrating the 5 Pursuits: identity, skill development, intellectualism, criticality, and joy. These pursuits are central to our teacher-created Genius Lesson Plans, designed to help students grow in leadership, humanitarianism, and self-discovery.
For example, October's book, Only One You, is about a fish using its unique gifts to make the world a better place. Weβve connected this to Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind, which teaches students to understand their purpose and use their talents to create a positive impact.
Emergency Drills Letter
Dear Eagle Community,
During the days of October 28-November 8th, our school will continue to conduct emergency drills to prepare students for potential emergency situations. These drills will focus on the General Response Protocols (GRP) for a Soft Lockdown and an Evacuation. Please use the GRP Summary Guide to discuss these upcoming drills with your child in advance.
Please feel free to contact Parent Coordinator Sharon Fink at (719)351-1155 if you have any questions.
Family Handbook, & School Traffic
Your child will bring home a copy of our Family Handbook, which is linked here for your convenience. This handbook is designed to provide clarity on our policies and expectations, helping you stay positively involved in both our school community and your child's education. We've simplified the process this year by consolidating all necessary parent sign-offs onto two pages at the end of the handbook. Please complete the last page sign-off form (front and back) and return it to your childβs teacher as soon as possible.
Please avoid picking up your child(ren) between 1:45 p.m. and dismissal time unless it is an emergency. If you need to pick up your child(ren) early for a non-emergency reason, we kindly ask that you do so before 1:45 p.m.
A quick reminder about traffic safety: If you park illegally or don't follow traffic regulations around our school, the NYPD may issue tickets without warning. For the safety of all our students and families, please be patient and kind, avoid parking illegally, follow traffic laws, and refrain from cutting off other cars in the Morning Stop & Drop Lane. Please do not park on either side of Natick Street during morning arrival. Natick Street is designated for Stop & Drop only.
Weβve noticed that during the first two days, a few parents have been double parking or blocking our neighbors' driveways to walk their children through traffic. This behavior creates dangerous conditions. For your safety and your child's safety, please refrain from doing this.
There has been no changes to our dismissal locations for this school year. For your convenience, below our Promises and Priorities we have included a picture showing where our dismissal locations are for the 2024-2025 school year.
