Early College High School News
Mission Statement
Our ECHS Owls are taught to have H.O.P.E.--faith in the premise that they can create OPPORTUNITY and a better future through EFFORT, HARD WORK, and PERSONAL COURAGE. This idea of H.O.P.E. is woven into the fabric of our ECHS family.
Greetings ECHS School Community!
There are TWO weeks remaining in the first nine weeks of this school year. We want to ensure that all students have what they need to be successful. Our teachers have been and will continue to reach out to discuss students who are at risk of failing or who may be failing, in order to share what is needed to raise their grades. Students are encouraged to reach out to their teachers and professors to schedule time to make up work and to get needed assistance. In addition, students are being scheduled for Friday Office Hours with their teachers, as needed. As mentioned previously, our Owls are encouraged to review home access (HAC) and Blackboard (for ACC classes), at least once a week, in order to monitor their grades and progress. We would also like to ensure that our parents are able to help us keep their students on track and encourage regular check-ins with your students as well. Thanks for your continued support.
As a friendly reminder, Thursday (October 3rd) is a RRISD Student Holiday (NO SCHOOL for our students) and Staff Development Day. Also, Friday, October 4th is a RRISD Staff and Student Holiday (NO SCHOOL for our students and staff). Please remember, although there IS NOT RRISD bus transportation on these RRISD student holidays, ACC classes ARE still in session on October 3rd and October 4th. As a result, Our ECHS Owls (who are in ACC classes) are reminded to PLEASE check with their professors for more information regarding the ACC course expectations for October 3rd & 4th. Please plan accordingly.
Feel free to check out the highlights within the“OWLstanding News” Section of this week’s OWL Update.
Please reach out if you have any questions.

Mrs. Holmes Meets a Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipient
Opal Lee (born October 7, 1926) is a retired teacher, counselor, and activist from Fort Worth, Texas who began the movement to make Juneteenth a federally-recognized holiday. She is often described as the "grandmother of Juneteenth."
On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed Senate Bill S. 475, making Juneteenth the eleventh federal holiday. In 2024, Biden awarded Lee the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Nation's highest civilian honor (Wikipedia contributors, 2024).
On September 22nd, Mrs. Holmes (ECHS Counselor) and a Fort Worth native, was able to meet Dr. Opal Lee. In addition, she had the opportunity to talk with her about a script Mrs. Holmes' daughter is consulting on about Juneteenth with Los Angeles writer, Aeryn Michelle Williams. Williams wrote The Umbrella Academy and Harlem.
A children’s book written and signed by Dr. Lee about Juneteenth is available for viewing in Mrs. Holmes' office.
Hispanic Heritage Month is from September 15th through October 15th. We are pleased to acknowledge the generations of Hispanic and Latino Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our ECHS community, society and the nation.
During this designated Month, the ECHS Culture Club and Access & Opportunity Campus Lead Mr. Julian Jones, are highlighting a Hispanic or Latino American to display in the Commons, within classrooms, during the morning announcements and within the OWL Update.
MUCH APPRECIATION to the ECHS Culture Club and Mr. Jones!

DISTRICT UPDATE:
Round Rock ISD Hosts Texas’ Largest Cross Country Invitational
Sep 25, 2024
McNeil High School held the largest cross-country invitational in Texas on September 21-22 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. The 30th annual McNeil Invitational featured over 400 teams and nearly 6,300 runners competing on a challenging course.
“This prestigious event brings together some of the top high school cross country athletes from across Texas,” said Round Rock ISD Athletic Director Jeff Cheatham. “The McNeil Invitational has a tradition of excellence, providing a competitive environment for teams and individual runners alike.”
McNeil Girls’ Head Cross Country and Track Coach Austin Wooten said the location was a big draw for runners, noting that Old Settlers Park has traditionally hosted the University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Cross Country Championships.
“We work closely with UIL and the City of Round Rock’s Parks and Recreation Department to make sure our course is exactly the same as the state course,” he said.
The week leading up to the event involved extensive preparations.
“We worked from 8 to 5 every day setting up the park—flagging, fencing, and marking the course,” said Wooten.
Volunteers also played a crucial role in the event’s success. McNeil runner Peyton Trost praised the support they received from fellow athletes and community members.
“Soccer ran the concession stand, basketball players helped direct people on the course, and our athletic trainers worked alongside Ascension Dell Children’s volunteers to care for injured runners. We had a lot of help,” she said.
The junior said she’s proud to have had a hand in such a massive event, and hopes to see her team go far this season.
“This was our hardest race of the year, and I think we did really well. I think we’ve got a good chance at going to regionals again,” she said.
Wooten echoed her sentiments.
“I feel really good about where our team is at. We’re in a really tough District, but our girls can hold their own. They’ve worked really hard to get where they’re at, and I think they’re going to do well,” he said.
