BandFest
On Friday, April 26, thirteen DHEMS students participated in Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 8 BandFest. This event included musicians from all over central PA; students from as far as Cowanesque Valley and Mt. Carmel met in Montoursville to create this esteemed ensemble. DHEMS band students enjoyed rehearsing challenging music, making new friends, and learning advanced musical terminology. The day culminated in a performance under the direction of Dr. Travis Weller of Messiah University. Students are already asking about next year's festival!
ChorusFest
Each year students audition and are selected for middle school Chorusfest. This year 9 students from DHEMS were chosen to participate in a region wide day of singing held at Canton High school. In total 19 school districts were represented with 160 singers. Students spent the day rehearsing, eating, rehearsing, and eating some more to end the day with a concert and a stop for ice cream on the way home! Chorusfest is a great opportunity for budding musicians to meet like minded performers and experience an enriched music making environment.

Engaging Class Activities
Mr. Haussener and Mrs. Smith's 6th grade ELA students are completing research projects on an animal of their choosing using various sources.
Our scientists in 6th grade recently completed their Solar Oven labs, where they learned how to harness the sun's solar energy to make s'mores.
Students in Mrs. Gaugler's 8th grade art classes are working on their clay sculptures.
Food Drive at DHEMS
DHEMS will be hosting a food drive from May 13 - May 24 to benefit the Union-Snyder Community Action Agency. Students will learn about food insecurity over the next few weeks in their advisory classes and work to collect unexpired goods to be brought into their homerooms. The homeroom at each grade level that collects the most goods will earn extra time on the inflatables on Fun Day.
Fun Day Volunteers
We are seeking parent volunteers to assist with our Fun Day/Field Day activities on Friday, May 31. All volunteers will need to have their licenses scanned in the front office. If you are interested in volunteering, please click here to sign up. Thank you!
Honors Reception
The DHEMS Honors Reception will be held on Monday, May 13 at 6:30 PM. The Honors Reception will be held in the auditorium at the Lewisburg Area High School. Students who earned honor roll for the first three marking periods during the current school year were invited to the reception. A letter was sent home to the families of students who were invited to the honors reception. After the program in the auditorium, light refreshments will be served in the LAHS cafeteria with music provided by the DHEMS Jazz Band. If you have any questions, please call the DHEMS main office.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards
The Lewisburg Sunrise Rotary Club is sponsoring up to three local students to attend the annual leadership development camp called RYLA: Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. Globally, RYLA is an intensive leadership experience organized by Rotary clubs and districts worldwide, helping students develop their skills as leaders while having fun and making connections. Students will:
- Build communication and problem-solving skills
- Discover strategies for becoming dynamic leaders in school or community
- Learn from community leaders, inspirational speakers, and peer mentors
- Unlock their potential to turn motivation into action
- Have fun and form lasting friendships, sharing campfires. laughs and good food!
In our area, this 3-day camp is an opportunity for rising high school freshmen through recently graduated seniors to explore and develop their own leadership skills. The 2024 camp will run from Friday morning, June 13 - through Sunday afternoon, June 15 and will again be held at the amazing Shepherd's Spring Retreat Center in Sharpsburg, MD. If desired, Rotary can assist with transportation of campers.
Student applications and parental releases (attached) must be completed, signed and returned to Becky Perez (rm86089@gmail.com) by Wednesday, May 15th. The local Lewisburg Sunrise Rotary Club will determine which applicants will be accepted as representatives from our area to the RYLA camp and advise them by May 17th.

The DHEMS TSA, with advisor Mr. Morgan, recently attended the TSA State Competition in Seven Springs, PA. Eleven students attended the state competition and participated in 18 different events. Mr. Morgan and company brought home one first place, two seconds, and one third place finish. Overall, our students took Top 10 in 10 of those 18 events. In total, the group finished with 12 top ten finishes at the state conference. We are proud of the hard work and dedication of our students and the committment of Mr. Morgan. DHEMS Ranked Top 20 Middle School in PA
DHEMS was recently ranked 17th out of over 2,000 schools in Pennsylvania by US News & World Report. We are extremely proud of our students, staff, parents, and community members who make our middle school so special.
The methodology focuses on state assessments of students who were proficient or above proficient in mathematics and reading/language arts while accounting for student backgrounds, achievement in core subjects, and how well schools are educating their students. Student-teacher ratios are applied to break ties in the overall score. The 2024 Best Elementary and Best Middle Schools rankings are based on publicly available data from the U.S. Department of Education.
“The 2024 Best Elementary and Middle Schools rankings offer a way for parents to get a snapshot of their child’s school and how well it is doing compared with other schools in their community," said LaMont Jones, managing editor for education at U.S. News. “In addition, U.S. News provides easily accessible data on student-teacher ratios, district spending, and the number of counselors a school makes available to its students.”
Parents, educators and students can see how DHEMS compares to other institutions and how the rankings are calculated on USNews.com.
