Kia Ora whānau!
Welcome back to school! Term 2 is here, and that means we're diving into our two 'winter terms' and kicking off winter sports – super exciting! It's been awesome to see so many of our learners jumping at the chance to represent our school across all the different sports. I can't wait to catch them in action this term. And a huge shoutout to our whānau members who step up to coordinate, manage, and coach our teams. Your dedication doesn't go unnoticed – you're absolute legends!
The weather has continued to turn it on for us, with only a few rainy days so far this term so we are still out and about and able to enjoy the sunshine which has been lovely. Just a gentle reminder that term 2 is a time where we start to see an increase in sickness so if your child is not feeling well please keep them home so that they are able to rest and recover and join us again as soon as possible. This helps stop the spread of germs amongst our school.
New faces @ Chelsea
This term we are very lucky to have two student teachers joining our team - being at the forefront of shaping teachers stepping into our classrooms is so important and we are privileged to be able to be part of their learning journey. Welcome Miss Small and Miss Anderson! Also, a warm welcome to Gaby who is a learning assistant joining us in Māhuri and a warm welcome back to Cathy who was on leave last term. Also, a big welcome to our new whānau who have joined our school - it was so lovely to welcome you all at the powhiri on Friday. Nau mai, haere mai ki te kura o Chelsea!
Strategic Plan
Our mahi this year is hugely focussed around strengthening te reo and tikanga Māori across our kura. You will see a note below from Miss Hedges who will be regularly promoting this within our school newsletter to encourage you all to be on this journey with us. I challenge you all to give it a go!
Hall Update
Unfortunately we have run into some delays with the remediation building works on the hall. While we cannot wait for the work to get underway we are patiently waiting for the Ministry of Education to approve extra funding due to rising building costs. The upside of this is that our amazing PTA hosted Trivia Night is able to go ahead.
I will keep you updated along the way with how this is going and fingers crossed I can bring you some positive news soon.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
Although we get to touch base with our parents and whānau regularly, the opportunity to meet and delve a little bit deeper into your child’s learning is always really beneficial and important so that you too can be a key partner in your child’s learning journey. I encourage you all to book in and make the most of this, your voice is really important to us. These will be held across two afternoons/evenings on the 22nd and 23rd of May. School will be finishing early on the 22nd with all students needing to be picked up at 12.30pm, parents/teacher conferences will then begin at 1pm. Kelly Club will be available for you to book your children into from 12.30pm if you need assistance with childcare. More information including the booking code will be communicated to you via HERO.
Uniform
We are starting to see lots of our tamariki coming to school each day in incorrect school uniforms. It would be fantastic to see real pride taken in wearing our school uniform, demonstrating that we are PROUD to be part of Chelsea Primary School. As the winter months are approaching a reminder that students are very welcome to wear plain navy blue track pants or tights to keep warm - please ensure that these have no logos on them. Also, take advantage of the wonderful Second Hand Uniform available which can be purchased from Claire at the school office on Tuesday mornings.
Term 2 is set to be another amazing term here at Chelsea Primary School and I am so excited to be part of it!

Te Reo Māori
Our staff are busy growing their reo (language). As a staff, alongside the other kupu (words) we use in class, we will be focusing on farewelling our students at the end of the day by saying: haere rā/e noho rā.
We say haere rā to the person going, and they respond with e noho rā, as we are staying. You could try the same farewell when you drop off in the mornings!
If you would like to hear the correct pronunciation for this, you can head to
Te Aka Māori Dictionary- click on the volume icon to hear a recorded version.

Trivia Night
The eagerly anticipated highlight of Chelsea Primary School's social calendar is back for 2024! Trivia Night 2024 - 'Television' will take place at Chelsea School Hall on Saturday 22nd June from 7pm until late. This event is strictly R18, so make sure you book a babysitter.
Trivia Night is a hosted quiz with tickets for $25 per person. There is a bar with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (EFTPOS available) and a live auction with fantastic items donated by local businesses and the school community. Throughout the night we will also run a silent auction and online auction for those unable to attend the event.
Teams are made up of 10 adults and many attendees choose to dress-up with a theme for their table. This years’ theme is Television. You can choose anything related to television, whether it's a T.V show, T.V. character, genre or anything else that you can think of!
Tickets are on sale now only from the school office. We recommend reserving a table while you organise your group as this event often sells out. You may hold a table and individual members pay for their tickets rather than one person paying up front.
The PTA is currently sourcing donations for our auctions. Each year Trivia Night raises over $15,000 and we hope to keep this momentum going. Can you help? Do you own or work for a business that could donate vouchers, goods or services? Please contact Krystal on pta@chelsea.school.nz if you think you can help.
Travelwise Team
Last week you may have seen some students out and about before and after school promoting road safety around schools. It’s always a great reminder. Thanks to our wonderful Travelwise team and our Road Patrol monitors for promoting road safety.
Parents, we depend on you to help keep us safe. A few of our Travelwise team had the speed guns out and noticed a few cars going over the speed limit in the school zone. Before and after school the speed limit in a school zone in 30km/hr.
The other part of safety around our schools is using our designated zebra crossings to cross the road and park in designated areas only (not on the yellow lines). In the coming weeks we will be popping a flyer kindly designed by Isabel Simpson if you have parked in the wrong place. Remember, we are role models for our tamariki.
Thanks the Travel Wise Team
Team Updates
Kākano
Kākano have had a busy start to the term- welcome to the new students and whānau who have joined us! In the first two weeks back, we have made ANZAC biscuits, kept growing our reading brains and explored the bush, where we thought we might have found a rhino enclosure- it turned out to be the sticker from the security company, but it did provide several giggles from the group!
Some notices from us:
- We will be training for cross country on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, children are welcome to wear sneakers if they would like.
- We have had a stomach bug go through our hubs, please keep your children home if they are unwell!
- Please remember, no toys at school- we have noticed a few extra treasures creeping into bags. Children are welcome to bring cars for the car track, however other toys/treasures need to stay at home.
Trivia Night – join our Kākano table!
This term the PTA are organising Trivia Night – one of the biggest nights of the social calendar for Chelsea parents. It is a great opportunity to get together and meet other new school parents, whilst supporting the school and having a great night out.
Every year we have a great response to this event, and as it stands we have 4 seats booked out of the table of 10. If demand is high enough, we will book a second table. If you’re interested in coming along or want to know more, please contact Kyle(Dad of Mackenzie, Hub 2) on kyletosse@gmail.com or 021 286 2674.
Pakiaka
Kia ora whānau,
Welcome back to term 2! We have had a great week and a half settling back in and have been straight into our learning program. This term, we have cross-country in week 6 and are training for this on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please feel free to pack separate training shoes and a spare change of clothes. For P.E. This term we are practicing our large ball skills, such as rugby, netball, soccer, and basketball, this will be on a Monday. Our Pakiaka Mother’s Day celebration is this Friday, May 10 at 1:45 pm in your child's hub. We are looking forward to seeing you there if you can make it.
As always, if you have any questions, please let us know.
Rito
We have started back at school with many slotting back into the class routines seamlessly. Looking ahead it is going to be a very busy term with lots of activity and learning. Please make sure you are reading all comms so that you can keep on top of things. It is very upsetting for children when they arrive without something or are unprepared.
This term we are training for our school Cross-Country and will be running on Monday, Thursday and Friday. Your child can come to school in their trainers so that it minimises the hassle. If your child is not well enough to run please ensure you have let their teacher know.
On a Thursday afternoon, we will be doing rotations across the syndicate. The students will be enjoying a 2-week session on either PE, Dance, Environment Studies, Science or Te Reo, and by the end of the term, they will have attended all of the sessions. Our Inquiry this term will see us studying natural landforms (mountains, volcanoes, lakes etc) and looking locally to find examples to investigate (Rangitoto, Lake Pupuke etc). We look forward to growing our knowledge in these areas! If there is anyone with expertise or connection in any of these areas we would love to hear from you.
Can you help?
We are still on the hunt for a workbench for our budding carpenters during DOT, so if you have one you want to get rid of please let us know.
Our enthusiastic gardeners go out on a Monday and Friday during DOT, and we are looking for some adults who are keen to supervise.
Do you have a talent you could share? Please reach out to one of the Rito teachers … we love having visiting experts or helpers for DOT
We look forward to connecting with you all further in week 4 at parent conferences.
Māhuri
Welcome to Term 2, Māhuri families. We hope you had a relaxing holiday. Cross-country training has started. On Monday we took the children for a walk around the course and spoke to them about hazards to look for as they run. Children can now wear their running shoes throughout the duration of cross-country training. If there is a reason why your children can not participate on a certain day, please email the classroom teachers or send a note to school with them. We will be running our second fundraising event on the actual competition day. It will be in the form of a bake sale. We will need your baking skills in full swing for this day! Further information will come out closer to the time. Please check this newsletter for other upcoming events; Trivia night being one of them. Always a fun time with lots of laughter and friendly competition!
Māhuri teachers.
