Cougar News
April 2024
April is the Month of the Military Child
April is designated as the Month of the Military Child, underscoring the important role military children play in the armed forces community and recognizing the challenges they face, including:
- having a parent deployed
- the uncertainty of the future
- moving away from friends and/or family multiple times (on average, six to nine times during a school career, an average of three times more frequently than nonmilitary families)
- possible cultural and language differences, depending on where they relocate
- missing tryouts for sports for that year
- not having a favorite sport/activity at a new school
Along with the regular stress that is associated with moving, relocation has additional challenges for children in regards to student’s education. To ease this stress, all 50 states have signed an Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children that ensures children of military families are afforded the same opportunities for educational success as other children and are not penalized or delayed in achieving their educational goals such as graduation or progression to the next grade because of frequent moves, according to DoDEA. Through this law, military students transferring schools at any time will not lose any credits or classes toward graduation and educational institutions must work with the child’s previous school and local military school liaison to accomplish this.
But it's not all bad news. Military children are known to be more studious, disciplined and well-rounded. They also show resilience and are open to new experiences. Many get to see the world depending on their duty station(s).
Military children are represented by the dandelion which is able to grow and bloom just about anywhere their roots are planted. Dandelions also symbolize happiness, joy, perseverance, endurance and hope.

If you receive a call that your student was absent, but you know they were in school, please check Ascender and send an email to the teacher for that period. That is the only way the absence can be fixed.

From the Cougar Counselors
April Guidance Lessons
We will not have classroom guidance lessons this month due to STAAR Testing.
However, with testing season just around the corner, you can help your student with coping with stress in healthy ways. Take a look at these helpful articles addressing stress management with teens (Article #1 and Article #2). You can also practice daily mindfulness activities with your student using this calendar.
As always, students are encouraged to make requests to see their counselor for any academic, personal, or social concerns or needs.
