Leyden’s Second Semester Parent-Teacher Conferences will take place Tuesday, March 11, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Conferences will be held in-person. No advanced registration is needed; families who attend will be provided the student’s schedule upon arrival.

The Ronald McDonald Caremobile will be visiting West Leyden on Friday, April 11, and East Leyden on Tuesday, April 15. The Caremobile team will be offering free health exams, sports physicals, and immunizations for students who have Medicaid or are uninsured. This is a great opportunity for students to receive necessary healthcare services.

The Caremobile staff will see students during the school day. A parent/guardian does not need to be present, but consent forms need to be filled out in advance. There are limited spots for both campuses and it is a first come first serve basis. Information packets will be mailed to students and are available in the health offices. Questions may be directed to the school nurses: West Leyden, Rhonda Kazmierczak, BSN, RN - (847) 451-3130 and East Leyden, Marlene Cuevas, BSN, RN - (847) 451-3084.

Through the Illinois State Board of Education, parents have an opportunity to share their thoughts on the important elements of Leyden’s school effectiveness in a state survey called 5Essentials. (Students and staff will have an opportunity to take the survey at a designated time.) The input provides Leyden administrators with important information that helps to better understand our parents, students and staff. We encourage parents to please share feelings, insights, and perspective with us via this survey, which will open tomorrow and remain open through March 28.

In order to remain compliant with this state requirement, Leyden needs a minimum of 20-percent participation from parents. (At this time, we have approximately 7-percent.) Input is kept confidential and helps us understand our families and as we make decisions moving forward.

Leyden will host its second Bilingual Parent Advisory Council (B-PAC) Spanish Parent Speaker Night on Wednesday, March 5, from 6:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. in the Eagle's Wing at West Leyden. Food and childcare will be provided.

Dr. Ferney Ramirez will present on "Positive Discipline: How to Apply It to Help Your Teen Become More Grateful and Healthy."

Leyden Fine Arts proudly presents Matilda the Musical, the heartwarming and witty adaptation of Roald Dahl's beloved story, March 6-8 at 7 p.m. and a matinee Saturday, March 8, at 2 p.m. The musical features a dazzling score by Tim Minchin and a book by Dennis Kelly, this Tony and Olivier Award-winning musical brings to life the inspiring tale of a brilliant little girl with an extraordinary mind and the courage to stand up for what is right. The show takes place in the West Leyden auditorium, 1000 North Wolf Road.

On Thursday, March 6, Sarah Vinson, M.D., presents, “Better Days: Supporting Kids’ Mental Wellness When Things Aren’t OK.”

The Illinois State Board of Education honored Teachers Teagan Lyke and Eric McFadden as part of its 2025 Those Who Excel program. Lyke earned an Award of Excellence in the category of Early Career Educator and McFadden was honored with an Award of Special Recognition in the category of Classroom Teacher.

Lyke teaches classes in our special education department, focusing on vocational training and independent living skills. She has been with Leyden since 2021. To receive the Award of Excellence, the most prestigious of the Those Who Excel honors, educators must have demonstrated a commitment to equity and to the success of all students. They regularly collaborate with colleagues, students, and families to create positive school cultures. They are lifelong learners who connect their schools to the community at large and who inspire other education professionals within and beyond their schools.

McFadden teaches in our business department, focusing on classes such as video game design and digital literacy. He started as a sub with Leyden in 2005 and then joined the faculty in 2007. Educators who receive the Award of Special Recognition are valued members of their school community who have been recognized by their colleagues, students, families, and administrators for the skills, passions, and talents they bring to their school community.

The Leyden High School Pep band Pep Band brought the energy to the ice at the Chicago Wolves game at the Allstate Arena on Saturday, February 23.

The freshman girls' basketball team wrapped up the season with an impressive 23-4 record, including a historic 10-0 in conference play. This may be the program's first-ever conference title at the freshman level.

On Saturday February 22, the Leyden Cheerleading program hosted 30 athletes for its annual 8th grade cheer clinic. At the cheer clinic, the 8th grade students got to work with current JV and Varsity cheerleaders on skills that they need for tryouts in April.
