Keeping Up with Comm Arts
~ October 28, 2024 ~
Hello Comm Arts Family and Friends!
Thursday, October 31st, is Halloween. Students and staff members may dress up but must follow the NISD dress code. The following items are NOT allowed: face painting, costume masks, or onesies.
It's already time for progress reports. Grades will be uploaded on Friday, November 1st. Progress reports will be available on HAC on Monday, November 4th.
The last day to take senior portraits on campus will be this Friday, November 1st. If you want to sign up, see Ms. De La Rosa. Last day for seniors to take their picture at the studio and make it in the yearbook is December 6th.
Any AP exam unpaid by November 1st will be canceled. Between November 2nd and November 14th, payment will be required before an exam is ordered. After November 14th, an additional $40 late fee will be required for exam ordering. See the AP Exams section of the newsletter for more details.
Friendly reminder that Daylight savings time ends this weekend. We gain an hour from November 2nd to 3rd. Remember to set your clocks back.
Planning ahead - Tuesday, November 5th, is election day. Because many schools are polling sites, we wanted to ensure our students' safety. So they have an off day, but the staff is here working on professional development.
Veterans Day Celebration
Communications Arts High School would like to honor the Veterans within our community. Please register using the Google Form if you would like to attend the Veterans Breakfast Celebration on November 11th at 8:15 a.m. Complete the form by November 1st.
Red Ribbon Week
It's Red Ribbon Week. The theme for Comm Arts is based on the wizarding world of Harry Potter. Students, please make sure your outfits comply with the NISD dress code.

Magnet Fairs
Parents - We are about to embark on another recruiting round of incoming 9th graders for next year. We have two magnet fairs (one at the Northside Gym and the other at Paul Taylor Fieldhouse) in December. If you want to volunteer to help us recruit, please let me know and fill out a background check form below. It's from 6:30–8 pm on the 2nd and 9th. You mingle with curious parents of 8th graders and answer questions. We are also there as a backup. We like to bring parents familiar with our school to give their perspective to potential new candidates. We appreciate your consideration.
Campus Highlights
Día De Los Muertos
As part of our annual Día de los Muertos traditions, our SNHS students continued the custom of creating a community ofrenda, an altar honoring and celebrating the lives of loved ones who are no longer with us.
Part of learning a language is immersing oneself in its culture, and Día de los Muertos is a cherished tradition in many Spanish-speaking countries. This holiday embraces the idea that death is a natural part of life’s cycle; instead of sorrow, it celebrates the joy and love brought by those who have passed.
Special thanks to Dana Cifuentes, who, alongside La Familia Cifuentes, contributed to our beautiful Día de los Muertos display by bringing two Catrinas to share with our community. These iconic figures represent the vibrancy and spirit of this tradition. Each Catrina was designed in collaboration with her family, adding a unique touch to our ofrenda.
"La muerte no existe. La gente sólo muere cuando la olvidan; si puedes recordarme, siempre estaré contigo."
-Isabel Allende
Austin Film Festival
The Austin Film Festival was a great experience. Several Comm Arts students meet and ask questions to famous scriptwriters, producers, and directors. They also got to network with other high school students and watch short films and new films coming to theaters in November and December. Some writers/producers were from Lopez vs Lopez, The Boys, American Psycho, and Matilda. Thank you, Mrs. Sabogal and Mr. Villarreal, for providing this amazing opportunity for our students.
World History AP
Sophomores explored the gunpower empires through a gallery walk in Mr. Harris's class last week.

SAT Fee Waivers
Students can request a fee waiver directly from College Board. Eligible students can receive SAT fee waiver benefits by logging in to their College Board account and submitting a request. Learn more on the College Board website.
AP Exams
The district has collapsed our College Board number into Taft's number. This change has resulted in all AP fees being collected by Taft. You may still pay through MySchoolBucks. AP exams must be paid in full by November 1st. Any exams (Comm Arts and Taft) will be canceled if payment is not received.
Each exam cost $40. Those with free & reduced, exam costs are $10.
Reminder: All My School Bucks School Store products will be disabled during NISD's Winter Break and Spring Break
AP Program
College Board’s Advanced Placement® Program (AP®) enables students to pursue college-level studies—with the opportunity to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both—while still in high school. Through AP courses in 38 subjects, each culminating in a challenging exam, students learn to think critically, construct solid arguments, and see many sides of an issue—skills that prepare them for college and beyond. Taking AP courses demonstrates to college admissions officers that students have sought the most challenging curriculum available to them, and research indicates that students who score a 3 or higher on an AP Exam typically experience greater academic success in college and are more likely to earn a college degree than non-AP students.

The Texas Legislature recently enacted HB 114, requiring all school districts to implement mandatory disciplinary alternative education program (DAEP) placement for students found in possession of, using, selling, giving, or delivering e-cigarettes or vaping devices on school grounds or at a school-related event.
This alternative school placement, required by law, is made regardless of whether the substance being vaped is a controlled substance or not.
