Oakland Technical High School
9th grade Newsletter #2
THE FINAL SCHEDULE OF 2020-2021 IS HERE...SORT OF
On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, students will have a total of two and a half hours a day of face time instruction in the morning (Advisory, plus two other subject matter periods). They will also have two more hours of "asynchronous/off screen instruction" time when they will have check ins or be assigned work to complete by their instructor for those subject matter periods to be credited for attendance. During this time, I believe teachers will make themselves available to support students needing help with those assignments (1:1) or they will be working with students in small groups that need additional support. The assigned work will generally have a due date/time that informs the instructor whether or not they should mark the student engaged/present for the day. Should a student be unable to complete an assignment they should email their instructor and that will count as engaged/present as well as they are essentially reaching out to teachers for help with assignments as they should be available via email. Should a student be marked absent for not turning in work or engaging, in theory, the teacher is supposed to go back and change the absence to engaged if the student complete the work or becomes engaged. This is a new process and one that does not seem sustainable for teachers (constant corrections around attendance)...this is the last thing they need to deal with on top of everything else. Again, please bear with us and simply have your child email their teacher if they are marked absent for missing an asynchronous assignment due date/time and the teacher should correct the matter.
Based upon the language in the recently agreed upon MOU between the OUSD/OEA, it has now been determined that Wednesdays (Starting 8/26), they will go to all of their class period for a 15 minute check in with teachers before moving to their next class. This is a change from our initial thoughts that each period on Wednesday would be 30 minutes each. suppose teachers will do a quick review or clean up around any issues from previous days lessons.
While I know there are some who may take issue with the schedule in terms of how much time their child is spending in class and have concerns round how they are being prepared for the next level, the reality is we know this is far from perfect. However, despite what color the county is on the state's opening spectrum, we are living during a pandemic and things are not going to be normal so we have tried to accommodate both students first and then teachers as well while following state educational guidelines. I do know that the 9th grade team of teachers and staff that I work with will most definitely do their best to prepare your child regardless as we recognize the importance of this transition year to HS and value the work that we do with your children. Please be patient with us as this is a learning experience for all. The new Grade Reporting Calendar can be found below as well.
