Year 5 Newsletter
Term 1 - Friday 13th October
Welcome to the Year 5 Newsletter
Dear Parents,
A warm welcome back to the second half of Term 1! We hope you all had a relaxing break.
'The Leaning Tower of Jenga' - Year 5 are happy to be back to school with their friends again.
Unit of Inquiry
We have completed our Who We Are unit and the children are now equipped with knowledge of learning styles and a variety of strategies to take their learning further. We hope that this 'enduring understanding' will enable the children to apply new skills throughout the year.
How the World Works
Central Idea: Energy may be converted from one form to another and stored in various ways to enhance human progress.
Lines of inquiry
• Form - Different forms of energy sources (renewable and non-renewable)
• Change - How energy is used (transformation)
• Perspective - Sustainable energy practices (progress)
We have just started our new unit on energy. The children have unpacked the Central Idea and represented their prior understandings in a CSI chart (colour, symbol, image). We also had a visit from a representative from En-trak to help us explore how we, as a school, consume energy and took time to reflect on what areas we might need to look at to improve our energy consumption.

Maths
Our new maths topic for Number is Addition and Subtraction.
The key objectives are to:

- Solve problems (including real life and word) involving multiplication of large numbers by one- or two-digit numbers using efficient mental and written strategies.
Use efficient mental and written strategies for addition and subtraction.
Strand
We will also be continuing to work through data handling as part of our strand focus. Data handling is also embedded in our UOI and the children will be learning skills through the following objectives:
- Collect, organise and represent data (including bar, line graphs and pie charts) where one object or symbol can represent many data values.
- Interpret and draw conclusions from data using range, scale and mode on graphs.
Children can also support their learning in the classroom by completing the Mathletics activities online.

English
We finished our explanation text unit this week. Children had fun reflecting on their learning using Plickers cards (see photo below) and responding to multiple choice questions about the brain.
Our spelling focus for this two week unit is 'ible' words. Children have logged their words to learn in their green spelling log books, so please do make sure these get a look and practice over the weekend.

Mindfulness Matters
We learnt how to detect, acknowledge and generously accept our feelings by paying friendly attention to them and by noticing how our bodies react. Most importantly we learnt that you don't have to change, hide or suppress them. There is also no need to ignore them or get carried away by them. Paying kind, loving attention to the way you are feeling, and appreciating them as part of what you are experiencing is how we learn to cope with them.
Why not try this at home?
Notice when your child may be experiencing a pleasant or unpleasant feeling and remind them that it is ok to feel what they are feeling.
Remind them:
1. Not to suppress it.
2. Not to get carried away by it.
3. Be kind to themselves.
4. and to give themselves what it is that they feel they need until the feeling changes.
We can't make a thunderstorm go away but we can take shelter until it passes.
