RMS Knightly News
Week of August 26, 2024
Hello RMS Knights and Families
Our September Honor the Castle theme is "Teamwork". We are starting the 24-25 school year with teamwork as our first monthly theme to Honor the Castle because...
Builds a positive school culture: Teamwork fosters a sense of community and belonging. By emphasizing collaboration from the beginning, students, families, and staff are encouraged to work together, support each other, and build positive relationships. This sets the tone for a respectful and inclusive school environment.
Develops an essential skill: Teamwork teaches our knights critical skills such as communication, cooperation, problem-solving, and conflict resolution. These skills are not only important for academic success but also for their future personal and professional lives.
Encourages diverse perspectives: When our knights work in teams, they learn to appreciate different perspectives and ideas. This diversity of thought can lead to more creative and effective solutions to problems, helping our learners understand the value of collaboration.
Promotes social-emotional learning (or SEL): Teamwork activities provide opportunities for our Knights to develop their social-emotional skills, such as empathy, self-awareness, and self-management. These skills are vital for their overall well-being and success in school and beyond.
Enhances engagement and motivation: Working in teams can make learning more engaging and enjoyable. Our Knights are often more motivated when they feel connected to their peers and are working towards a common goal.
By starting the school year with a focus on teamwork, we hope to lay a strong foundation for a collaborative and supportive learning environment that will benefit our students, families, and staff throughout the year.

WELCOME BACK KNIGHTS! Opening Day - Monday, August 26th
Dear RMS Families,
On behalf of the entire RMS staff, we are excited to welcome you to the 2024-2025 school year! Over the summer, our FPS Operations and Maintenance team has been hard at work preparing our buildings, classrooms, and parking lots to ensure a smooth start to the school year.
Our RMS staff has also been busy finalizing student schedules, engaging in ongoing professional development, and planning curriculum and lessons for the year ahead. We are excited about the upcoming school year and all that it promises. Our year-long theme, "Setting the Stage for Success," emphasizes creating habits that foster success academically, emotionally, socially, creatively, and athletically, while strengthening our RMS community (Honoring the Castle with our Knights). We will continue to offer opportunities that align with our District's Portrait of a Graduate by nurturing creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, communication, citizenship, and character, all while building strong relationships within our school and the wider community.
RMS will open its doors for the 2024-2025 school year on Monday, August 26, 2024. This will be a full school day, beginning at 8:05 AM and ending at 2:50 PM. For detailed information about the first day’s procedures and our Arrival and Dismissal process, please scroll down.
We are eager to partner with you to ensure our students reach their highest potential. We understand that success in school requires support from home, school, and the community. A strong partnership with you will make a significant difference in our Knight’s learning and growth. Together, we share the responsibility for our students’ success, and we want you to know that we will do everything in our power to fulfill that responsibility. We ask for your support in guiding your student’s learning by ensuring they:
- Follow our PBIS guidelines: Respect others, Model responsibility, and make Safe choices throughout their school day, in the community, and during school-sponsored events.
- Arrive at school every day prepared to learn with their MacBook fully charged, classroom materials ready, and a mindset focused on growth and learning. (MacBook distribution for students will take place during the first and second weeks of school).
- Demonstrate model citizenship by adhering to device care, dress code, and code of conduct guidelines, which are essential as we work together to "Honor the Castle."
The RMS staff and I are privileged to be part of the FPS family. We appreciate your support and look forward to meeting you at our Meet the Teacher/Class Information Night on Thursday, September 12th, starting at 6:00 PM. Additional details about this event will be shared during the first week of school.
Sincerely,
RMS Administration

Personal Electronic Device Update!!!!
During the 24-25 school year, we are implementing a new cell phone/electronic device policy in our classrooms and common large group collaboration areas at Richards Middle School. Cell phones and other similar electronic devices will need to be placed in a phone caddy upon a student entering a class at the start of the hour and may be picked up at the end of the class period. Our teachers will have individual designated slots for each student on their class roster if they choose to bring their phone to school. This step is in an effort to limit distractions and promote engagement in the learning environment for all students. This includes when a student leaves a classroom to go their locker, use the restroom, and/or while traveling to another classroom during a class period in which the student will return back to their designated class for the hour. This does not include if your child has a medical need to carry their device.
Students do have the option to keep their cell phone or electronic devices in their locker and can check them during passing time at their locker and/or following lunchroom expectations for use. It is also important to note the use of headphones or airPods will not be permitted except for teacher directed assignments, the use of 1 earbud in the lunchroom, or for accommodations/medical reasons.
We thank you in advance for your support of this expectation!

Coming Soon.....
2024-25 Meals Information
Breakfast and Lunch are FREE for all students for the 2024-2025 school year.
We encourage everyone to participate. You are still welcome to send your child with a lunch from home if you would prefer.
Families are still asked to complete a Education Benefits Form, as this information is used for district funding.
The week of 8-26 to 8-30
Honor the Castle by respecting others, modeling responsibility, and making safe choices.
Outside Food and Beverage Policy
Outside food delivery is a safety concern. We do not want to have strangers and people that we do not know coming to our buildings with delivery bags. It also is a workload issue for office personnel. Managing multiple food deliveries during lunchtime becomes an additional responsibility for our office staff.
The District works hard to provide a variety of healthy, good-tasting food in its cafeterias, and students are always free to bring their own lunch to school. We will continue to follow our past practice of making sure students receive lunch if they forget to bring one from home.
REQUIRED PAPERWORK for all FPS sports
All students must hand in a completed MHSAA Physical dated after April 15, 2024.
https://www.fraser.k12.mi.us/cms/lib/MI02212020/Centricity/Domain/81/Sports%20Physical%20Form.pdf
All students must also go to arbiter sports and complete the on line student registration.
https://students.arbitersports.com/
If either of these forms are not completed, student will be withheld from participation until both forms have been submitted.
To provide the most effective process for entering and exiting Richards Middle School, we need our families consistent help in observing the below traffic expectations:
- Our RMS bus loop is only to be used by emergency vehicles and our district’s school buses between the hours of 7:15 am through 4:00 pm.
- To help with our daily traffic flow, please follow our painted traffic arrows in our parking lot.
- In supporting our traffic flow for entering and exiting for all vehicles, please observe no standing, parking, waiting and stopping in the parking lot aisle ways.
- When exiting Richards Middle School at dismissal time, please utilize either our RMS Garfield exit, FHS Garfield exit or FHS Klein exit.
Please be aware of students, families and guests who are walking in our parking lots by obeying traffic laws, regulating your speed, and following the traffic direction arrows. Images can be found below. Please no parking or standing where you see a red x.
Our district security personnel will communicate these expectations to our families when needed. Thank you for your support with keeping RMS a safe travel area for everyone on campus.
PLEASE BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR ADDITIONAL SIGNS ALONG THE DROP OFF LANE TO HELP DIRECT TRAFFIC FLOW!
Attention students who utilize the crosswalk to walk over Garfield Road
This is a reminder to our students to ensure that you are using the appropriate area to cross the street to get to the other side of Garfield. Please see pictures below for reference of our crosswalk signs and striped area by the Richards Middle School Electronic Board. We want our students to make sure they are looking both ways and being aware of vehicles traveling on Garfield. Always wait to cross this crosswalk when the road is clear to do so.
We thank you for always being aware of your safety and traveling vehicles as you arrive and leave RMS at this crosswalk area.
