Masonboro Monthly
October 2024
Principal's Report
As we wrap up the first full month of school, I want to take a moment to thank you for your support and partnership. Your involvement has made the start of this school year a wonderful success for both the students and our staff.
Before we get too far into this year, I think we should take a moment and celebrate some of the wonderful achievements from last year. About two weeks ago, the data from the 2023-24 school year was released, and there were some wonderful stories about schools in New Hanover County. There are two areas that are highlighted each year: academic growth (determined by EVAAS) and academic proficiency (the percent of tests that earn a score of a Level 3, 4, or 5). The scores that were released only look at EOG results, but our students in kindergarten through 2nd grade also achieved high growth as well as high proficiency on reading measures. Masonboro has traditionally been one of the highest proficiency schools, and last year was no exception based on the following highlights:
Mathematics
3rd grade math had the highest proficiency among New Hanover County Schools, 2nd in the southeast region, and 13th in the state.
4th grade math had the highest proficiency among New Hanover County Schools as well as the highest proficiency in the southeast region, and 14th in the state.
5th grade math had the 2nd highest proficiency among New Hanover County Schools, 2nd in the southeast region, and 43rd in the state.
Reading
3rd grade reading proficiency was 1st among NHCS, 2nd in the southeast region, and 22nd in the state.
4th grade reading proficiency was 2nd among NHCS, 2nd in the southeast region, and 30th in the state.
5th grade reading proficiency was 3rd among NHCS, 3rd in the southeast region, and 24th in the state.
Science
Masonboro’s science proficiency ranked 4th among NHCS, 7th in the southeast region, and 68th in the state.
In addition to Masonboro’s exemplary proficiency scores, our school had the 2nd highest overall growth index score among all elementary schools in New Hanover County! Masonboro’s overall reading growth score was the highest among all elementary schools in the county, and our overall math growth score was tied for 4th. Masonboro has exceeded growth expectations for six out of the past nine years all while averaging over 90% proficiency. Having both high proficiency and high growth is not an easy task, and our teachers did a magnificent job this past year working to grow each student.
Finally, Masonboro’s Grade Level Curriculum Presentations (Need to Know) will be held on the dates listed below. We would love to see many of our families attend these sessions!
