The Academies of Chapel Hill
January 13, 2025
Welcome to the Academies of Chapel Hill
Chapel Hill Independent School District is proud to introduce the new High School education model, The Academies of Chapel Hill.
The purpose of The Academies is to achieve the District's vision and mission for all students. Supported by Tyler Junior College and University of Texas in Tyler, this model aligns with state initiatives to provide every student with the foundation of knowledge, skills, and character necessary to excel in higher education, work, and life.
We believe that every student should have a clear and achievable path to success marked by measurable goals. The Academy model connects our learners with their passion and aligns them with their career goals for future prosperity
About the Academies
Students will begin their journey at the Freshman Academy, then moves into one of the three Career Academies during their sophomore year.
Students will choose to belong to an academy based on their personal interests, skills, and goals. The Academies will provide an academic structure similarly to a university. Instruction will be project-based, applied, and integrated with the involvement of business engagement and post-secondary institutions with the support from the local community.
The Academies of Chapel Hill will allow students to choose a program of study and learn in a relevant, hands-on environment with real-world application. Our students learn math, science, English, and social studies in the context of their Academy.
Graduation Program Overview
Students at Chapel Hill ISD will complete the Foundation High School Program with Endorsement. Program requirements include five End of Course Exams: English I and II, Algebra I, Biology, and US History as well as 28 credits to graduate. Students will select an endorsement during 8th grade to start the process of course selection and creating a personal graduation plan. All students must choose an endorsement. The endorsement may be changed but will require signatures from student, counselor, and parents.
In addition, beginning with all students first enrolled in 12th grade in the 2021-22 school year and beyond, the Texas Education Agency has added a FAFSA/TASFA completion provision in order for students to graduate.
In order for a student to meet high school graduation requirements, they must comply with the following:
- Before graduating from high school, each student must complete and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
- or a Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) (for all undocumented students).
There are some exceptions to meeting this graduation requirement:
- The student's parent or other person standing in parental relation submits a signed FAFSA Opt-Out form indicating that they authorize the student to decline to complete and submit the financial aid application, or
- The student signs and submits the FAFSA Opt-Out form on the student's own behalf, if the student is 18 years of age or older, or
- A school counselor authorizes the student to decline to complete and submit the financial aid application for good cause, as determined by the school counselor.
A student may also earn a Distinguished Level of Achievement (DLA) diploma by successfully completing :
- a total of four credits in mathematics, which must include Algebra II
- a total of four credits in science
- the remaining curriculum requirements
- the curriculum requirements for at least one endorsement
- Arts & Humanities
- Business & Industry
- Multidisciplinary Studies
- Public Service
- STEM
A student must earn the distinguished level of achievement to be eligible for top 10% automatic admission. Students on the DLA plan may also earn performance acknowledgements in Outstanding Performance in a Dual credit course, bilingualism/biliteracy, Outstanding Performance on PSAT, SAT, ACT-PLAN, or ACT or by obtaining a national or international recognized business or industry certification or license.
Planning Your High School Program
Personal Graduation Plan
Each student will have a 4-year Personal Graduation Plan (PGP) created during the spring of 8th grade with the help of his/her school counselor.
Parent participation is VITAL! Parents should meet with their child's counselor to discuss the plan and are required to approve the plan in writing before students register for their high school courses.
Each year after, the PGP will be revised with the student, parent, and counselor, according to the student's interests and needs.
High School CTE Academies
The Academies of Chapel Hill allows students to choose a course of study based on a specific thematic or academic focus. Students choose an academy based upon their interest and participate in industry-related field trips, a job shadowing experience, an internship and a capstone project. Along with core content classes, students will take at least one career and technical class each semester that is aligned with the academy's focus.
You have a choice of three different academies offering a practical, hands-on approach to learning in fields that interest you.
You start in Freshman Academy, where you learn about what's expected of you in high school. You take YouScience, which helps you explore your natural aptitudes and talents. You also go to the district's career exploration fair and visit local colleges/universities.
Through the Academies, you get career exposure so you can make an informed decision about what you want to do once you leave high school. In the four years you will be with Chapel Hill High School, you explore career pathways and advanced classes while earning early college credit and nationally recognized industry certifications. In every grade, you'll meet business and community partners who will show you what the day-to-day is like for careers through special learning opportunities.
Your counselors and teachers will be very helpful in advising you more specifically about programs offered that would best benefit you in the future.
College and Career Readiness
All students should graduate from high school ready for college, careers, and life, prepared to pursue the future of their choosing. Sixty-five percent of all jobs, and 92 percent of traditional STEM jobs will require postsecondary education and training. College- and career-ready (CCR) graduates should be able to enter and succeed in entry-level postsecondary courses without the need for remediation and specifically should have:
- Mastery of rigorous knowledge and skills in core academic disciplines, including English language arts (ELA)/literacy, mathematics, history, civics, science, art, and music. Content knowledge and skills in mathematics and in ELA/literacy are foundational to the study of all other disciplines, and high school graduates are often asked to demonstrate competency in these subjects before they can begin further study (at two- and four-year colleges), enter certain job training/apprenticeship programs, or pursue the military career of their choice.
- The skills and dispositions necessary to be successful in charting their postsecondary path. Many of the skills a CCR graduate has are obtained through academics. The skills most demanded by colleges and employers are, by design, inherent in rigorous K-12 expectations - the ability of students to communicate effectively (both verbally and in written communications), to solve problems, to think critically and develop informed arguments, and to analyze information and data. Collaborating, communicating and presenting information, and using research to make informed judgments are among the critical skills that impact success.
- Successfully participated in postsecondary opportunities through advanced coursework (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, dual enrollment) as well as career and technical education, work-based learning, and other opportunities for exploring interests, aptitudes, and goals so that graduates can successfully navigate pathways that connect education and employment after high school.
The Freshman Academy
Setting the Foundation for Success
The Freshman Academy is designed to provide 9th-grade students with a supportive and enriching environment that promotes both academic and personal growth. Through a structured, small-learning community, students will gain essential skills and confidence that will serve them well throughout high school and beyond. In the Freshman Academy, students are grouped together throughout the day, allowing them to build strong peer relationships while receiving personalized attention.
One of the key components of the Freshman Academy is the Freshman Seminar, a yearlong course focused on career exploration, personal development, and academic readiness. This course is designed to help students:
- Discover a wide range of career options, exploring industries and professions that may align with their interests and skills.
- Identify their passions and strengths to make informed decisions about their future educational pathway.
- Build essential skills such as problem-solving, communication, and teamwork that are vital for success in high school, college, and the workforce.
Throughout the seminar, students will participate in activities that help them explore various career fields through College and Career Ready labs. These hands-on experiences, combined with modules on soft skills like time management, professionalism, and collaboration, prepare students for future success in any career they choose. The course is also an opportunity for students to reflect on their goals and values, empowering them to make thoughtful decisions about their future.
By the end of their freshman year, students will choose an Academy and select their program of study or major, focusing on a specific career pathway. While this decision is important, students will have the flexibility to change their pathway once during their sophomore year, ensuring they have the time and support to explore their interests and find the best fit.
In addition to the Freshman Seminar, students will engage in core classes, fine arts, and extracurricular activities that enrich their academic experience. By combining rigorous coursework with career readiness and personal development, the Freshman Academy sets students on a path for success, empowering them to achieve their goals in high school, college, and beyond.
Start strong. Explore your future. Succeed together.
