West Sylvan Middle School
April 6, 2025
Dear West Sylvan Families,
This weekend was extended for our Scholars due to the end of the Third Quarter with an added Educator grading day on Friday, April 4th, and then an Educator Planning Day (NO school for Scholars) on Monday, April 7th. School resumes on Tuesday, April 8th, and the Fourth Quarter begins. Any quarter-long electives change Tuesday, and Scholars should review their schedules in StudentVue to see where their new quarter classes are located for Tuesday.
Report cards will be viewable in StudentVue and ParentVue by the end of this school week. If a Scholar is in danger of failing a course, Educators will alert you through this report card. Final grades for the semester will be issued in June. All grades matter for the upcoming school year, and Scholars should be doing their best in their classes and showing proficiency in courses as an indicator that they are prepared to move forward to the next grade level in school.
Tuesday, April 8th, we are on a Staff Meeting Late Start schedule. School doors open at 9:20 AM and classes start at 9:30 AM on Staff Meeting mornings. School buses will pick up students fifteen minutes later than their normally scheduled pick up times to compensate for these late start days.
Communications related to the upcoming school year will continue to come from both our West Sylvan and PPS district team with regular updates, weekly or bi-weekly.
Jill Hunt, Principal
Ben Keller, Assistant Principal

Portland Public Schools is proud to partner with the Portland Art Museum, our host of the 2025 HeART of Portland: A PPS K-12 Arts Showcase. This premier district-wide annual event kicks off with an evening of student dance, music, and theatre performances, plus the opening of a stunning student visual art exhibition featuring over 100+ works.
🎨 Breaking the Grid: This year's student visual arts exhibition also features a citywide collaborative student art project inspired by the Portland Art Museum exhibition Psychedelic Rock Posters and Fashion of the 1960s. ELECTIVES FORECASTING
We will complete our forecasting process with our current 6th and 7th Graders the second week of April by visiting English classes. You can see your students’ selections in StudentVue once they are submitted. Elective options are limited for the upcoming school year due to the current budget cuts. Most students will choose a World Language and either an Art or Design elective. Every student will take three quarters of PE and one quarter of Health (state requirements). Band and Choir are year-long commitments. Here are some notes to be aware of for scheduling:
Seventh Graders should continue in the same World Language from 7th to 8th grade to build skill sets, which will ultimately make High School World Language courses more accessible.
Eighth Graders have four World Language choices. They may choose either Spanish or French at our school site or one of the two World Languages which are taught at Lincoln High School, Mandarin and Arabic. Since we do not have exploratory classes for Arabic or Mandarin, no foundational knowledge is needed to select either of these World Languages for 8th graders.
Eighth Graders who choose Mandarin or Arabic will start their day at LHS on the days when those classes meet, and then they are bused to WSMS to finish their learning day. We are the only Middle School in PPS that has this opportunity for Eighth Graders to have so many options for World Language learning!
Any current Seventh Graders who are in Algebra 1-2 now will move to Geometry at LHS next year as Eighth Graders, and they will also start their day at LHS and bus back to WSMS to have that advanced Math access.
Current Sixth Graders will make a choice between either Spanish or French, and they should commit to that World Language through Eighth grade so that they can qualify for potential High School World Language credit at the conclusion of 8th grade.
AVID will no longer be funded for PPS Middle Schools, so we will no longer have AVID as an elective that we can offer, unfortunately.
CHROMEBOOK CARE REMINDERS
This year, we moved the Chromebooks from a 1:1 checked out system to having students use the Chromebooks only at school for class assignments and projects. Teachers assign a specific Chromebook to students for use in their classes. Unfortunately, we are still seeing a decent number of Chromebooks damaged by our students. Classroom teachers will report any student who has been identified for vandalizing the school Chromebooks through a school referral, and families will be notified of the referral and the cost of the damage caused by their student to the school device. For context, the cost to replace devices is below:
CTL Chromebook with charger is approximately $515.00
The cost for a replacement charger is $11.50
These charges will be added to a student’s PPS account, along with all outstanding fees which must be paid in order to receive a High School diploma or transcripts from PPS in future years.
YEARBOOKS FOR ALL!
This year, thanks to generous family donations, all students will receive a WSMS yearbook, free of charge. Typically, the yearbooks are not ready for distribution until June during the final weeks of school. There is no need to pre-order a yearbook due to the all-access distribution this year. If you would like to contribute to the cost of printing, please click this link to go to the 2024-25 Yearbook Donation item in SchoolPay. Your donation will allow us to continue to offer free or reduced-price yearbooks to all students in future years.
EIGHTH GRADE CORNER
Our Eighth Graders will have a final Promotion celebration held at Lincoln High School on the evening of Wednesday, June 11th, in the Lincoln High School Gym. Seating is available to all until filled, and each year our families do fill the Gym.
There will be additional fun activities for our Eighth Graders in June, which will be available for Scholars who remain eligible for activities, such as a day trip to Oaks Park on Friday, June 6th, and a Pack Party on the evening of Friday, June 6th. Eligibility for activities like Oaks Park and the Pack Party will be dependent on adherence to school-wide behavioral expectations, passing grades, and positive patterns of attendance. Students who are deemed ineligible will be contacted prior to the events to let them know that they may not participate.

We know that young people are exposed to many images of substance use, and likely to have friends and peers who are experimenting. We hope this film and conversation will help us discuss substance use openly and understand how we can support the young people in our community to make informed decisions and stay safe.

>>> A post-film discussion will include experts & professionals from the field, as well as Lincoln High School teens! <<<
This film is the third feature documentary in the Screenagers trilogy. It debunks myths and shares strategies parents and schools can use to encourage healthy decision-making, support teen mental health, set limits, and create healthy home environments. Exploring the latest research and learning more about the personal experiences of teens and families, the film highlights the changing landscape of the substances themselves, offering solutions for how we can best empower teens as they face decisions about what they will and will not be influenced by.
