MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
As the final days of the school year approach, our students are working hard to finish strong. Our educators and support staff are also hard at work making sure each student is completing assignments, mastering skills and content, and preparing for exams. This is a crucial time, and I am grateful to all our families, community members and school staff for guiding students to success.
I am also thankful for everyone who participated in our recent feedback survey. I learned some valuable lessons about areas that we can continue to improve as a district. Out of nearly 160 responses, 62% believe our schools are doing “very well or somewhat well” in preparing our students for life after graduation. In addition, 82% of participants feel “very connected or somewhat connected” to what’s happening in our schools. Although this was a relatively small sample, the comments we received are helping guide our communication efforts and strategic planning. This survey is just one of the ways we are seeking feedback as part of our ongoing conversation with our community.
Efforts related directly to preparing our students for life after graduation include the ongoing development of career pathways through our partnership with Umpqua Community College. These pathways guide students through a sequence of courses, including many dual credit classes, designed to lead to professional certificates or degrees. Pathways include entry into high-demand fields such as allied health and nursing, fire science, forestry and other industries fueling our local economy. You can learn more on our Career Pathways page.
When it comes to improving connections and communications between our schools, families and the community, your feedback is incredibly important. I know families can feel overwhelmed by the many ways schools share information about students, activities and events. Our goal is to streamline and clarify how we communicate, and I appreciate your patience. The rollout of ParentSquare this school year has been a big hit with staff and families, and plans are underway to make it even easier to connect with our schools. Stay tuned, and in the meantime, please make sure you’ve verified your contact information and updated your notification settings in ParentSquare. Click here to learn more.
As we look toward the next school year and long-term success of our students and district, we are using family, staff and community feedback to shape our mission and vision for student success. Our community has high expectations for us — and rightly so. In turn, we have high expectations for our students to put in the effort, find inspiration for a successful future, and graduate with the skills they need to help our entire community thrive.
I am committed to finding innovative ways to best serve our students, families and community. Our school district, with our strong partnerships with UCC and local businesses and industries, is uniquely positioned to help grow our local economy and ensure our young people have meaningful opportunities close to home.
Together, as a community united in support of our students, we can make amazing things happen for Roseburg. Stay engaged, get involved, and join us in nurturing the talents of the children who will shape our community’s future.
With gratitude,
Jared Cordon

Students train for real emergencies
In recent training, students worked in pairs to assess patients, respond to detailed scenarios and apply clinical reasoning under pressure. This immersive experience is helping students build the skills and confidence needed for careers in emergency medical services.
Celebrating years of dedication
We recently honored more than 110 employees at the district's annual Employee Recognition event, celebrating a combined 1,540 years of service. Held at the Roseburg High School Student Center, the event recognized staff members who reached service milestones of five to 45 years. Family, coworkers, and district leaders gathered to show their appreciation and support.
FROM THE STEAM TEAM: CALLING ALL STEAMOLOGISTS!
Our Elementary School STEAM Team shares the latest updates on science, technology, engineering, arts and math education around the district.
Teams formed hypotheses, launched rockets and measured results with digital altimeters to determine which variables created the highest-flying design. The activity also introduced key physics concepts like thrust, momentum, drag and weight.
COMMUNITY PARTNER SHOUT-OUTS
Fifth-graders explore forests
Fifth-grade students from across the district participated in the annual Douglas County School Forestry Tour, trading classroom time for hands-on learning in the outdoors. With support from Oregon State University’s Douglas County Extension Service and local forestry experts, students explored the link between healthy forests, everyday wood products and sustainable practices.
Highlights included learning about pollution's impact on fish, wildfire prevention techniques and historical forest use. The day wrapped up with interactive activities like tree planting, cross-cut sawing and a fun pulp toss competition..
Fremont Jazz band takes home trophy
Fremont Middle School’s Jazz Band had a fantastic day at the Pleasant Hill Jazz Festival, their only competitive festival of the year. After lots of hard work and preparation, the band received great feedback from the judges and proudly brought home a third-place trophy.
RHS students discover career pathways
Roseburg High School students recently attended the Umpqua Community College Career Fair, where they explored a wide range of local job opportunities and career paths. The event began with a panel of industry professionals who shared real-world advice and answered student questions. Afterward, students visited booths representing careers in healthcare, forestry, robotics, trades and more. The experience opened students' eyes to the many possibilities available in our region after graduation.
