Fairview Falcon Family Newsletter
September 2024
From the Principal
Hello, Fairview families!
We have had an incredible start to the 2024-2025 school year! We got to welcome students to school on the first day with music and dancing, and later on, our student athlete friends from Columbia College had the opportunity to greet students as they arrived. Teachers have been working diligently to create relationships with students, teach routines and procedures, and determine learning goals for the year. Everyone has done an amazing job making sure that Fairview is a wonderful and inclusive place for all students, and that wouldn't possible without your support and encouragement. Thank you for all that you do for us!
Now that students have begun to settle into routines, parents should let students come into the building on their own at arrival. If you need to meet with the teacher, please make arrangements with them ahead of time. We appreciate your help with this as we continue to establish our schoolwide procedures.
Teachers are currently working to complete Fall assessments on all students. This information will be used to make plans for small group and intervention work, as well as to monitor student progress. Follow up assessments may also be needed for some students.
Later this month, we will have our first Falcon Friday, we'll host our Back to School Night event, and more! And Fairview Fever information will be coming home in a couple of weeks. Be sure to read this newsletter and keep it handy throughout the month so that you don't miss anything.
As always, please feel to reach out to us if you have any questions, concerns, or comments about ways that we can better serve your child or your family.
Sincerely,
Dr. Tyler Simmons, Principal
Fall Bike/Walk to School Day Has Been Renamed, "Falcon Friday!"
On Friday, September 13th, we will celebrate our first Falcon Friday of the year. Please encourage your child to walk or bike to school on 9/13. After students arrive to school, the playground will be open for an all-school morning recess that will be supervised by Fairview staff and volunteers. The blacktop will be zoned by grade to create a fun and safe environment for everyone, just like last year! Plus, the PTA will provide bananas for the students and coffee for the adults . Let's make September 13th a special day filled with energy and excitement!
Back to School Night and Family Social
On Thursday, September 19th parents and caregivers will have the opportunity to come in for Back to School Night. At this event, adults will visit their child's classroom to learn about what will be taught this school year and how they can support student learning at home. Each classroom presentation will last about 25 minutes and we'll cycle through 3 rotations to allow families with multiple children the chance to hear from all of their teachers. Back to School Night will begin at 4:30 and conclude at 6:00.
At 6:00 on Back to School Night, our PTA will sponsor a Family Pizza Social over at the Fairview Park Pavilion. Simply walk over, grab some FREE pizza, and enjoy some spending some time with other Fairview families!
From the PTA
Welcome back to school, Fairview families! If you don't have time to read all the bullets below, you can watch this 60 second welcome video from our PTA President, Luke Neal.
Please consider joining the Fairview PTA! The PTA supports Fairview's teachers, staff and students. Your $10 membership helps fund school activities, keeps you in the loop and connects you with other families.
- Your involvement is welcome at whatever level works for you - there's no obligation to attend meetings or volunteer. However, if you are able to help out, there are many needs and opportunities where your support would make a big difference.
- Our first meeting of the year is Monday, September 9 at 5:30 PM in the Media Center. This year, our monthly meetings will fluctuate between a 4:30pm start time and a 5:30pm start time. We hope that by offering varying meeting times, we can accommodate more members' schedules.
- PTA hopes that families will join them for a social event immediately following Back to School Night! Pizza and bottled water will be provided from 6:00 - 7:30 PM. Stop by to get to know other families that call Fairview "home" !
- Mark your calendars for the Fairview Fever Festival on Friday, October 11th from 4-7pm. This annual family event includes games, a bounce house, live raffle, silent auction, and food for purchase. Information about ticket purchasing and volunteer opportunities is coming soon in Friday Folders. If you own a business or have a service to offer, please consider donating to the raffle or auction by contacting Ben Martin benjamartin84@gmail.com
- If you have not already purchased Fairview sportswear, it's not too late! We will have a table at Back to School Night and other upcoming events.
Picture Day is Wednesday, September 18th
Look in your child's Friday Folder for more information.
Hearing & Vision Screening
Hearing and vision screenings will be completed on all Kindergartners, 1st graders, 3rd graders, 5th graders, and new students to CPS. Any concerns found by the nurse will be communicated to a guardian for follow-up by a doctor/medical professional. Please contact the school nurse at 214-3590 (ext. 31440) if you have any questions regarding this process.
Monthly Update From Our Specials Teachers
Hello Fairview Families!
Welcome to the 2024-25 school year. My name is Andy Wright and I’ll be hanging out with your kiddos on their PE days. I’m excited to have gotten the year started! We’ll spend the first few weeks getting to know the routines of the gym and reviewing some fun activities. By now I’ve seen each class. Be sure to ask them what’s been going on. Depending on the grade level, we’ve been playing “Boot Scootin Boogie Tag”, “Locomotor 4 Corners” and “Musical Hoop Round Up”. With the Kindergarteners we read “The Gym Teacher From The Black Lagoon” and worked on moving safely with personal space. So far so good!
There are 2 rules for the gym—be safe and have fun. We took some time to discuss what these mean and what it looks like in the gym. Ask your kiddos what they remember!
Please check their A,B,C,D schedule and get those tennis shoes on. If they don’t have them they may not get to participate in all of the day’s activities.
Finally, if you’ve been in the gym lately you might have noticed the pictures on the bulletin boards. They are of our kiddos in action!! If you wish, send me a photo of your child doing something active and I’ll get it up on the board. You’re welcome to send in a hard copy pic or email me one and I’ll get it up!
Thank you for your support and all the best to a great year!
Sincerely,
Mr. Wright
From the Art Room
Hello Fairview Families! My name is Lindsay Robb, I am the Art teacher at Fairview. It has been wonderful to see all the creativity happening in the art room already this year! Fairview artists are learning the routines of the art room and have started designing the cover to their sketchbook. The sketchbooks will stay at school until the end of the year. Every student K-5 has also started a Monochromatic Self Portrait that will be displayed all together in the hallway! Ask your artist about what they have been creating! Please feel free to e-mail me anytime lrobb@cpsk12.org

In the Media Center, students are excited about new books! We are reviewing checkout procedures and book care. We will continue with skills to help students find great books that they can’t wait to read!

Home School Communicator Update
Hello Fairview Families,
My name is Tynesha Green, Home School Communicator with Fairview Elementary. This makes year two as a Falcon and I’m glad to be back! Throughout the day, your student(s) may see me in the morning during arrival time, in the hallways, in their classrooms, and on the playground and cafeteria. As a Home School Communicator, I provide student support throughout the building. I provide resources to students and their families, and assist with student transportation on an as-needed basis. I am a liaison between home, school, and community, as all three intersection with one another to aid in student success. As I split with Locust Elementary as well, you will find me at Fairview on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Friday afternoons.
I have encountered many verbal greetings, waves, and hugs from our Fairview Falcons, and look forward to seeing your students throughout the school year! Should you need anything, the best way to contact me is by email TasGreen@cpsk12.org.
