Class of 2025 Valedictorian & Salutatorian
We are proud to announce that Emma Holmberg has been named the Valedictorian and Rose Holliday the Salutatorian of the Ichabod Crane Class of 2025!
For Emma, who has been a Rider since kindergarten, this honor is the culmination of years of dedication. “I've worked really hard and it finally paid off in a way that was quantifiable,” she shared, reflecting on her journey. She fondly recalls the teachers and friends who shaped her experience, particularly her fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Mallery, who made learning exciting. “When math really started to click, it just felt different,” Emma said.
Her passion for math and science has led her to pursue a future in medicine, with a potential focus on cardiology. Currently enrolled in the Questar III BOCES New Visions Medical Program, she is taking a rigorous course load, including college-level anatomy and physiology and English. By graduation, she will have earned nearly 40 college credits. She is also currently shadowing doctors at Samaritan Hospital.
In addition to her academic achievements, Emma is a dedicated student-athlete, competing in volleyball, basketball and softball. She is also actively involved in school leadership, serving as Class President, Vice President of the National Honor Society and Secretary of the Habitat for Humanity Club, among other roles. “It’s nice to have an impact and see that student voices are driving decisions,” she said.
As she prepares to attend Cornell University in the fall, Emma is both excited and a little nervous. “I will miss my friends, but I look forward to what’s ahead,” she said.
Rose, who also has attended ICC since kindergarten, is honored to be named Salutatorian of the Class of 2025. She didn’t initially focus on class rankings, but once she realized she was second, the pressure built. “It became something I wanted to see through to the end and achieve. I’m really excited to be the Salutatorian, knowing the hard work paid off,” she said.
Teachers and staff shaped Rose’s journey over the past 13 years. Mrs. Jermain, her fifth-grade teacher, made learning fun. “I remember making memory binders and leading our own parent-teacher conferences,” she recalled. Mrs. Edwards and Ms. Eberhardt, the High School band and chorus directors, created a welcoming space. “They have always been teachers I can talk to. The music suite is a safe place and I’ve always enjoyed my music classes,” she said.
Psychology has become her passion and she plans to major in it in college. Courses in child studies, adolescent psychology and general psychology have reinforced her goal of becoming a licensed clinical social worker, focusing on therapy for children.
A competitive dancer since first grade, Rose is eager for the next chapter. “I will miss my close friends and Ichabod’s tight-knit community, but I know we’ll find a way to stay in touch,” she said.
High School Principal Craig Shull praised both Emma and Rose for their exceptional achievements.
“They have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, dedication and leadership throughout their time at Ichabod Crane. Their hard work and commitment to excellence have set a remarkable example for our students. We are very proud of them and look forward to their future accomplishments,” he said.
The Sound of Success: Music at Ichabod Crane
At Ichabod Crane, we know that a strong K-12 music program is an important part of a well-rounded education. Music helps students grow academically, socially and emotionally — building skills that go far beyond the classroom.
“Participating in a school music program is about more than just notes and rhythms – it’s about working together, expressing yourself and tackling challenges head-on,” said Assistant Superintendent Lucas Christensen, who was a music teacher for over 20 years before coming to ICC. “At Ichabod Crane, we see how these experiences shape our students, both inside and outside the classroom. Whether they’re performing on stage or collaborating with their peers, the lessons they learn through music stay with them for life.”
Music is in full swing at the Primary School, where our youngest musicians are learning, playing and exploring new sounds. Our K-3 students are wrapping up March Music Madness, voting for their favorite instrument after exploring 16 from around the world.
Our 3rd graders have started learning the recorder, beginning with Hot Cross Buns. The second-grade classes are refining their mallet technique on xylophones and metallophones. The first graders are enjoying a folk dance unit, while kindergarteners focus on matching pitch, improving their singing voice through fun games and exploring instruments for the first time.
"Students at the Primary School have been working hard and having fun building a strong musical foundation to use when entering the elementary school, and more importantly, throughout their lives!" said Primary School Music Teacher Olivia Faure.
Over at the Middle School, our fourth-grade chorus has been preparing for months for Tuesday’s 6:30 p.m. concert in the High School Auditorium. They even held a mini dress rehearsal, performing for Primary School third graders and their fourth-grade peers.
“They put on an outstanding performance that included many solos and instruments and got the attention of the incoming fourth-grade class, who are excited to see what their chorus experience will be like next year,” said Ms. Diaz, chorus director and Middle School music teacher.
Recently, our 7th and 8th-grade Band and Chorus showcased their talent at the Empire State Plaza in Albany, delivering an outstanding performance that impressed everyone.
“It was a good opportunity to show our band and chorus to the community,” said 7th grader Kasey Shultis, who performed in both ensembles. Her classmate Katherine Benton agreed, adding, “We sounded really good and it was a fun chance to spend time with friends outside of school.”
Additionally, 7th-grader Gabe Yusko was selected to perform in the NYSBDA Middle School Honor Band. He joined 120 talented students from across NY and traveled to Syracuse earlier in March for an unforgettable experience. Gabe had a blast playing his baritone saxophone alongside amazing musicians and making new friends!
The Crane Acting Troupe wrapped up its spring production of Mary Poppins, bringing the beloved story to life in three spectacular performances at the High School Auditorium.
March was a busy month for music at Ichabod!
This week, Ichabod Crane will host the All-County Music Festival, welcoming talented student musicians from Chatham, Hudson, New Lebanon, Taconic Hills and Germantown. The festival will feature performances by the Elementary Chorus, Junior High Band and Senior High Chorus in the High School Auditorium on Friday, April 4.
The first concert, the Elementary Chorus, starts at 6:15 p.m.
The Junior High Band and the Senior High Chorus perform at 7 p.m.
Come out and support our incredible musicians!
