Longhorns Set Sights on Playoff Spot
The Cedar Hill High School Football Team showed a great deal of improvement in a 35-13 loss to defending UIL Class 6A, Division II State Champion, DeSoto, last Friday in the Battle of Belt Line, sponsored by Fairfield Inn Cedar Hill.
"The defense did a great job and had a few major stops," Cedar Hill first-year head football coach Nick Ward said. "It was one of the bright spots of the night."
The Longhorns (3-5, 2-3) trailed 13-7 in the second quarter against the undefeated Eagles (7-0, 5-0), who rank third in Texas 6A and 12th nationally.
Cedar Hill senior quarterback Anthony Edwards completed 13 of 25 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown to Kymeion Turner, for Turner's first touchdown reception of the season. The Longhorns had 174 passing yards to the Eagles' 171.
Zhaiylen Scott, who primarily plays defensive end, rushed for his team-high fifth touchdown of the season, in the first half. Here's a photo gallery from the game.
Coach Ward Milestones
He also has a chance to become the first Cedar Hill head football coach to lead a team to the playoffs in his first season. Joey McGuire won three State Championships and Carlos Lynn coached the 2020 Team to the State Championship Game, but neither guided the Longhorns to the playoffs in their first season,

Cedar Hill Scholar Athlete of the Week (Sponsored by Fairfield Inn Cedar Hill)
Dante Wesley remembers what it was like to experience the playoffs two seasons ago.
The Cedar Hill High senior cornerback was called up from the Junior Varsity Team as a sophomore, when the Longhorns advanced to the third round of the UIL Class 6A Division II playoffs. He was on the roster but didn’t play. However, it gave him the hunger to experience playoff football on the field.
“It made you want to make it even more,” said Wesley, the Cedar Hill Scholar Athlete of the Week last week, sponsored by Fairfield Inn Cedar Hill.
Wesley and the Longhorns (3-5, 2-3) are on the cusp of returning to the postseason with two regular season games remaining.
Wesley, who is considering SMU, TCU, Oklahoma and Oregon State, is committed to success in the classroom as well. He has a 3.8 Grade Point Average, is in the top third of the Class of 2024 and is a member of the National Honor Society.
“I’m really into math – I like solving problems,” Wesley said. “I plan to major in Architecture in college.”
Wesley’s older sister is Skylar Wesley, a 2023 Cedar Hill Graduate who served as the CHISD Teen Superintendent for two years. She’s now a freshman at SMU.
“If I didn’t understand something and she did, she’d help me and show me how to do it,” Wesley said.
Wesley’s father, Dante Wesley, played cornerback in the NFL from 2002-2010, including two Super Bowls. Wesley was 4 years old when his father retired from the NFL.
“I remember after a game, he’d pick me up from the stands and take me to the locker room,” Wesley said. “Nowadays, he really encourages me with my tackling and my game overall.”

Meet The Broncos
Both teams have improved, and they are actually tied in the District 6A-11 Standings entering Friday's game.
"The record doesn't give you everything about their team," Cedar Hill first-year head football coach Nick Ward said. "They may have had a rough season, but they're capable of getting into the playoffs as well."
Legacy, which made the jump from Class 5A in 2022, defeated Mansfield Lake Ridge, 27-14, last Friday, for its second district victory of the season. Last month, the Broncos lost to Dallas Skyline on the field, but the Raiders had to forfeit the game due to use of an ineligible player.
In its non-district slate, Legacy scored a 35-30 win over Dallas Woodrow Wilson. In that game, both Jaden Manning (207 yards) and Kaidan Johnson (123 yards) rushed for more than 100 yards and scored two touchdowns apiece.
