Note from the Principal...
Hello WMS Families & Community!
The calendar this month brings the end of our school year, and hopefully warmer weather! As we
approach the final days, remind students to keep focused on learning and maintaining WEST expectations. As of May 1, there are only 17 days remaining for the 2023-2024 school year. Let's finish the year strong!
All laptops will be checked in on Wednesday, May 22nd, during the school day. The last day of school is Thursday, May 23rd, with a two hour early out dismissal at 12:45.
Thank you for your partnership this school year. Have a restful and meaningful summer break. We will see you in August.
-Tori Albright, Assistant Principal
Library Books
All library books are due back in the WMS library on May 17th! Students with lost or damaged books receive weekly emails with information about replacement costs. Please check with your child to make sure they have turned everything in. If not, please look through your car, family areas of your house, your child's room and backpack for any missing books. Please turn in any books you find as soon as possible. Thank you in advance.
While the school library is closed, visit the Sioux City Public Library for free summer activities for the whole family!

Health / Safety / Fitness Tip: Disaster Preparedness
Tornados and snow storms are the most common disasters in Iowa. Severe thunderstorms, floods and extreme heat also occur often and in addition, fires and hazardous material spills occasionally present a danger. Here are a few tips for keeping your family safe.
HOLD A FAMILY MEETING
- Meet with your family to discuss why it is important to be prepared.
- Review the types of disasters that are most likely to occur, and explain what to do in each situation.
- Learn your community's warning system (sirens, text messages, etc.) Teach younger children what each siren stands for and what to do when they hear it.
- Assign responsibilities to each family member, and plan to work together as a team.
- Decide on locations where you will meet in case a disaster strikes:
- Outside your home and neighborhood in case of a sudden emergency, such as an earthquake or fire.
- Outside your city in case you cannot return home.
- Discuss what to do in an evacuation and create a family evacuation plan.
- If a family member is in the military or frequently away from home, plan how you will respond if he or she is away when a disaster strikes.
- Document how your family will communicate if a disaster strikes, and create a family communications plan.
- If anyone in your family has a disability or special needs, adjust your plan accordingly.
- Be sure to include your family pets in your plan.
PREPARE
- Assemble a disaster supply kit.
- Locate safe places in your home for each type of disaster. (example: tornado - go to the basement vs. a flood where you would go to the highest level if you couldn't evacuate in time)
- Determine the best evacuation routes from your home.
- Become trained in first aid and CPR.
- Show each family member how and where to shut off utilities (water, gas, electricity).
- Make a complete inventory of your home and property.
- Teach each family member how to use a fire extinguisher and where to find one.
- Post emergency contacts (friends, family, neighbors, police, fire, etc.) on the refrigerator.
PRACTICE YOUR PLAN
- Practice your plan with your family on a regular basis (every six months).
- Check your disaster supply kit every three months.
- Replace stored water and food every three months.
- Update any emergency contact info as changes occur.
