West Bridgewater District Newsletter
Hello WB Students, Staff and Families,
Welcome to Fall and it is my pleasure to share many things that are going on in the West Bridgewater Public Schools. Thank you to our dedicated and hard working staff who have done a wonderful job opening up the school year. It was so great to see so many parents, family and friends at the Curriculum Nights at each of the 4 schools.
There is a lot of information in this newsletter. I hope you get a chance to read through it all. I also hope you take the time to read the monthly principal newsletters (they are also linked in this newsletter).
Thank you for your continued support of the West Bridgewater Schools!
Middle/Senior High School Receives National Recognition
We are honored and proud to announce a wonderful accomplishment for West Bridgewater Middle/Senior High School and our school district.
Congratulations to West Bridgewater Middle/Senior High School for receiving National Banner recognition from Special Olympics North America! They have been selected from a national certifying body to achieve standards of excellence in the areas of inclusion, advocacy, and respect!
The athletes, partners, students, coaches, volunteers, teachers, staff, and administration at West Bridgewater Middle/Senior HS have all played key roles in creating a social climate where everyone feels included and respected for who they are. We are honored to have such a strong and fully inclusive school and to be recognized for our hard work and dedication. The school and leadership team are a model for other schools, and we look forward to continuing to grow the program for years to come!
West Bridgewater Middle/Senior High School is 1 of only 19 schools in Massachusetts and among 202 schools nationwide to achieve this status for the 2023-24 school year.
MSBA Elementary School Project Update
As we begin the school year we are very busy with the elementary school building project. Our School Building Committee (SBC) is now meeting twice a month. This is an active, well represented group with a mix of educators, town employees and members of the community. We are working with our Owners Project Manager (OPM) which is PMA and designer HMFH Architects.
We have worked with the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) to have 4 enrollment options. The number of students was decided through a collaborative process with the MSBA enrollment team. The numbers below for options #2 and #4 do not include our Preschool numbers which are estimated at around 75 students.
1. Enrollment for Grades 1-3 at Rose L MacDonald School - 455 students
2. Enrollment for Grades K-4 (consolidation with the RLM, SSS and Howard Grade 4) - 750 students
3. Enrollment for Grades 1-6 (consolidation with RLM and Howard) - 930 students
4. Enrollment for K-6 (consolidation of SSS, RLM and Howard) - 1,075 students
Over the past few weeks we have had many meetings in regards to the building project. For example the OPM and Designer and members of the SBC have had meetings that include:
- School Tours of elementary schools with similar size and grade configurations
- Site/Civil Engineering discussions - to talk about potential sites
- Safety and Security meeting - with WB Police and Fire
- Visioning Sessions - we have had 4 meetings with one full day visioning session which had 35 people attend from school and community
- Existing Conditions Walkthroughs at RLM and Howard - looking at the current infrastructure and sites
- Regularly scheduled School Building Committee Meetings (twice a month)
- Meeting with the MSBA - to look at schedule for moving to future Modules
We have more visioning and educational planning meetings planned for the next few weeks. The goal of the meetings is to work with the Educational Consultants, and school staff as well as information learned from our full day visioning meeting to gather all relevant information to create the Educational Plan that will be submitted to the MSBA. The Educational Plan will be the basis for what we need in our new building to support the educational needs of our students and staff in the future.
Here are some upcoming next steps:
End of October 2024 - Draft Educational Plan
December 20th - Submit Preliminary Design Program (PDP) to MSBA
January 2025 – April 2025 (4 months) - Preferred Schematic Report (PSR)
May 2025 – October 2025 (6 months) - Schematic Design (SD)
Community Forums - TBD
Town Ballot Measure Vote - TBD (est. Winter 2025/2026)
Along with looking at the 4 enrollment options and grade configurations we are also looking at site locations for the building project. At this time the sites have been narrowed down to the Rose L MacDonald site and the Howard School site. We are in the process of updating our website and once it has been updated it will be shared with the public. This will be a good place for all to get relevant information on the project.
It is our goal to keep you and the community updated as much as possible as we go through this process. As always if you have any questions please reach out mbodwell@wbridgewater.com .
PARENT SURVEY - Bullying Intervention and Prevention Plan
As part of the School Committee Policy - West Bridgewater Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plan we are sending this survey to students (grades 4-12), staff and families. We appreciate your input and information. As with all surveys this is optional but we do appreciate feedback and we will be reviewing all feedback at the school building level and with our Safe Schools Committee and your input is valued. Below is the definition of bullying:
Bullying, as defined in M.G.L. c. 71, § 37O, is the repeated use by one or more students of a written, verbal, or electronic expression or a physical act or gesture or any combination thereof, directed at a target that:
causes physical or emotional harm to the target or damage to the target’s property;
places the target in reasonable fear of harm to himself or herself or of damage to his or her property;
creates a hostile environment at school for the target;
infringes on the rights of the target at school; or
materially and substantially disrupts the education process or the orderly operation of a school.
This survey is completely anonymous and does not collect any identifying information.
This survey will be active until November 1, 2024
If you have any specific information you would like to discuss please contact the building principal or Superintendent Mark Bodwell at mbodwell@wbridgewater.com
Wildcat Unified Bocce Team
The Wildcat Unified Bocce team started their season this week traveling to Medfield for an away game and hosting Canton for two great matches! They have worked hard to learn the rules of the game and practice their tosses. The team is excited to host the Unified Bocce Jamboree at the Middle-Senior High School gym on Monday, November 4 from 3:30-5:00pm. They will welcome teams from other towns to compete and would love to have support from the community to cheer them on!

They will be selling the bleached dyed t-shirts pictured for $25, those interested can fill out the google form here or email Nikki Maloney at nmaloney@wbridgewater.com.
Addressing Hate and Bias in Schools
Information has been posted on our website (link below) and sent to all West Bridgewater families.
Recently, all Massachusetts school districts received updated guidance on schools' legal obligations to prevent and address hate and bias incidents. This guidance was issued in partnership with the Governor's Office, the Office of the Attorney General, the Executive Office of Education (EOE), and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).
Hate has no place in our schools. Discriminatory harassment and hate-related bullying are prohibited in our schools and we must all work together to stand up against all forms of hate, bias, and prejudice. As a school district, we are obligated to investigate alleged incidents, respond effectively and take affirmative steps to create a positive school culture where all students feel safe, supported and respected.
As a school district, we are dedicated to cultivating a culture of belonging. We strive to ensure that all students feel welcome, accepted, and supported, regardless of their background, identity, or ability. Our commitment to creating an inclusive environment means every student has equitable access to learning opportunities and is recognized for their unique strengths and needs. By working closely with families, staff, and the broader community, we will continue to create a school climate where student voices are heard and valued, and relationships are built on respect, trust, and empathy. We firmly believe that when students feel a sense of belonging, they are empowered to thrive academically and personally.
Linked below are two important resources to support this effort:
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child's principal or contact me directly. We are here to support you.
West Bridgewater Multilingual Education Program
The West Bridgewater Multilingal Education Program is growing! Since the beginning of this school year we have welcomed 15 new students to the program! The Multilingual Department is once again hosting the annual Fall Family Dinner at the WBMSHS on October 29th at 5:00PM.
We invite all new Multilingual students, and their families to join our teachers, and the rest of the West Bridgewater ML community as we celebrate the new school year, and enjoy a Harvest "Breakfast for Dinner." This is a free event, interpreters will be onsite, and there will be fun for the kids! Parents can eat, mingle with teachers and get to know each other! Your child should have brought home a paper invitation, but you can also visit the Multilingual Learner Website for invitations in other languages! Hope to see you there!

Eating Local!
West Bridgewater is committed to expanding the amount of local food served to our students. Some examples this year are several varieties of local apples, peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers from C.N. Smith, honey and eggs from Vineyard Farm, and beets and corn from Langwater Farm. Butternut squash from our own RLM garden was made into soup at the MSHS and will be roasted for our elementary students. Doug DeCosta, our senior citizen volunteer, just harvested the potatoes planted by Mrs. Spencer's 3rd grade class last spring.
We are looking for other local vendors for poultry meat and dairy. If you know a local producer that might be interested in working with the school, please have them contact me at agrinder@wbridgewater.com.
Adding money for a la carte items: While meals are free, students must have money on their accounts to buy extra items. Milk is available for students that bring meals from home for $.75 at all schools and Howard and the MSHS offer many healthy snacks and bottled water. Cash and checks are accepted and electronic payments can be made through MySchoolBucks. You will need your child's 10-digit SASID# to register for a MySchoolBucks account.
Food Assistance- Project Bread Food Source Hotline , West Bridgewater Food Pantry.
Positions available- Great at social media and interested in food photography? There is a stipend available for an individual to promote our School Nutrition program on social media. Hours are very flexible and variable but the applicant will need to be available during the day.
We are also looking for cafeteria substitutes!
Any questions or concerns, please contact Ann Marie Grinder, Food Service Director at (508)894-1220 or at agrinder@wbridgewater.com.
Dirty Thumbs Program
Dirty Thumbs Farm and Garden Volunteer Adventures This Week
Dirty Thumbs Farm and Garden Club is a volunteer group who meet twice a week to help at Vineyard Farm. Ms. Winter, K-6 Wellness teacher, runs the program. This week, between 2 days of Dirty Thumbs, we had about 60 students from the Howard School, 5 Middle/Senior High School volunteers, 2 parent chaperones, and 3 patient teachers who embarked on an adventurous 1.5-mile hike through the woods to visit Vineyard Farm. Once we arrived, the kids got right to work volunteering alongside the farmers in various ways.
Some of the children helped weed under the produce washer and around the plants, while others replaced the soil around the strawberry plants to prepare them for winter. We were also able to harvest and taste the edible Nasturtium flower. Its delicate flower melts into your tongue and once chewed, leaves you with a spicy finish! It is delicious in salads, but more expected, is the cherry tomatoes we also harvested. Those of us who love the sweetness of a freshly picked garden tomato couldn’t resist popping a few in our mouths (after they were rinsed). We distracted the gabby geese to collect fresh chicken eggs, then cleaned and packaged them for sale in the farmstand. Everyone had the chance to groom and connect with the farm's animals. We all have our favorites, whether it’s goats, bunnies, puppies, piglets, or even an emu or the horse!
It was a busy but rewarding day filled with hands-on learning and service projects, as well as enjoying the company of friends in the sunshine. The kids had a great time exploring the farm and connecting with nature through these diverse activities. We're already looking forward to our next adventure!

Lunch with the Kindergarten Students
Mr. Bodwell has continued the practice of having lunch with all of the Kindergarten students. He has 4-6 students from each of the K classroom for lunch in his office. It is certainly a fun time!
Curriculum Corner - Mrs. Llanes
Over the last five years, West Bridgewater Public Schools has invested in high-quality educational curricula, including ST Math, Wit & Wisdom, and Illustrative Math, to enhance student learning outcomes across various grade levels. ST Math is a favorite of many students, especially Kindergarteners (read more about ST Math below!).
Wit & Wisdom is a K-8 English Language Arts curriculum that builds students' knowledge of history, science, literature, and the arts through rich texts. It encourages students to think critically about complex ideas while developing reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. By integrating content-rich knowledge and literacy, Wit & Wisdom helps students develop a deep understanding of the world around them while cultivating a love of reading and intellectual curiosity.
Illustrative Math, used in seventh and eighth grade as well as Algebra l, Algebra ll, and Geometry, is a problem-based curriculum that encourages students to develop strong mathematical reasoning skills. It emphasizes student engagement with mathematics through real-world problems, collaborative learning, and critical thinking. Rather than focusing solely on procedures, Illustrative Math encourages conceptual understanding by allowing students to explore different strategies and solutions, building a solid foundation for higher-level math in future studies.
These programs reflect the district's commitment to providing students with comprehensive, research-based learning materials that foster academic growth and critical thinking. This article will discuss ST Math in more depth.
ST Math is a visual, game-based learning program designed to enhance students' understanding of math concepts. It is rooted in neuroscience research and designed to strengthen the conceptual understanding of math through interactive puzzles. Developed by the MIND Research Institute, the program is based on the brain's natural ability to solve problems visually, which enhances long-term retention and comprehension. Research shows that students using ST Math consistently outperform their peers and exhibit improved problem-solving skills. The program's emphasis on visual learning reduces language barriers, making it especially effective for English language learners and students with diverse learning needs. Instead of relying on language or traditional math symbols at first, ST Math presents visual puzzles that students must solve, encouraging them to think critically and apply logic.
ST Math's interactive puzzles help children develop problem-solving skills and a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
How it works: Students solve progressively challenging puzzles through different levels. They receive feedback on their attempts, allowing them to learn from incorrect attempts and adjust their strategies.
Goal: ST Math's primary goal is to improve math comprehension and build a solid foundation for future math success. It supports math skills, from basic number sense to algebra.
Who is JiJi? (Some of you may have heard your children call ST Math JiJi Math.)
JiJi is the beloved penguin mascot of ST Math and plays a central role in learning. As students progress through the ST Math puzzles, JiJi helps guide them by crossing the screen when a puzzle is solved correctly. JiJi doesn't talk, which aligns with ST Math's focus on visual learning, allowing students to rely on their problem-solving skills rather than verbal instructions.
JiJi motivates students to keep going, representing progress and achievement in the game. Each time students successfully solve a problem, JiJi moves forward, offering a fun and encouraging visual cue.
For many students, JiJi becomes a symbol of perseverance and success, helping to keep them engaged and excited as they work through challenges in the program and experience productive struggle.
Productive struggle allows students to grapple with challenging problems or concepts independently before offering help. It encourages perseverance and critical thinking, helping students learn how to solve problems independently.
Productive struggle helps children build resilience and confidence. When students are allowed to make mistakes and figure out how to correct them, they develop a deeper understanding of the material.
In ST Math, productive struggle happens when students face challenging puzzles. They may not solve them immediately, but with persistence, they learn to refine their strategies and persist, strengthening their problem-solving skills.
By fostering a growth mindset, ST Math and productive struggle work hand-in-hand to help students approach math with confidence and curiosity, building a foundation for long-term success.
West Bridgewater Public Schools' investment in innovative programs like ST Math, Wit & Wisdom, and Illustrative Math demonstrates a focus on improving student learning and critical thinking. These curricula are designed to enhance understanding, with ST Math offering a unique, visual approach that supports math comprehension through interactive learning. By encouraging perseverance and problem-solving, ST Math helps students build a solid foundation for future success while promoting a growth mindset and resilience in tackling academic challenges.
