NEWS IN THE SECOND GRADE
In the month of November, second grade focused on building our reading and writing skills. In ELA, we worked on comprehension strategies such as predicting and identifying the main idea and theme of stories. During writing we worked hard on our personal narratives to include a clear beginning, middle and end.
In math, we worked on addition and subtraction within 100 using a variety of strategies including an open number line, break apart, compensation and a hundreds chart. During social studies, we discussed where our food comes from and community service jobs.
Lastly, we participated in fun activities related to Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving.
ARONIMINK EMBRACES OUR LITTLEST LEARNERS
Our kindergarten students have been working so hard this month! They’ve been busy identifying all their lowercase letters and building quick fluency skills. In math, they’ve also been practicing recognizing and showing numbers 0–10. We are so proud of their progress and enthusiasm as they learn and grow every day! Keep up the great work, kinders!

A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL MEEHAN
Hello Bywood Families!
The holiday season is upon us and there is much to do and a lot coming up. Students are working hard to accomplish their goals here at Bywood. In fact, you should ask your child what goal they are working toward.
Winter Break will start on Monday, December 23rd, so Friday, December 20th will be the last school day before Winter Break. Please make sure that over break your child is reading and still completing math work. They are able to do this on Amira, IXL, and Waggle. It is so important that they keep their brains learning over the break.
When we return on Thursday, January 2nd, the students will be getting ready for some important tests. First, they will have their Aimsweb reading test. Next, they will take their Map benchmark assessments. Our EL students will begin the Access Testing, which is just as important as PSSA testing.
So much will be happening and before you know it, the end of the year will be upon us! Please remember how important attendance is for your child and do your best to have them here learning!
One last thing, as I always say, Keep Smiling!
💛Mrs. Meehan💜

KINDNESS ABOUNDS AT GARRETTFORD
Garrettford held a two-week long "Caught Being Kind" initiative and logged over 125 acts of kindness performed by our students. The acts ranged from helping classmates to assisting staff and visitors. We are very proud of our students and even though the initiative has ended, we are still noticing good habits and behaviors continuing. We were especially impressed with students showing empathy and caring towards others and those putting other students before themselves. Students who were "Caught Being Kind" received a note to take home to their parents/guardians, a lanyard to wear and keep, as well as a chance to win a prize at the end of the initiative.
STUDENTS HONOR AND SHOW RESPECT TO VETERANS
Leading up to and on Veterans Day, our students took part in a variety of learning activities to better understand Veterans Day and the sacrifice they have made for all of us. We had special announcements with interesting information about the holiday, students made cards for Veterans and we also celebrated by displaying American flags across the front lawn. Several of the Upper Darby PD officers assisted with this effort.
FOOD DRIVE HELPS OUR COMMUNITY
Mrs. McIlhargy, our Social Worker, spearheaded a food drive to help two of our local food banks. Families were very generous and we were able to provide several cartons of non-perishable foods to each of the food banks. This was a wonderful way to impress upon the children the importance of giving back to our community.

BIG BROTHERS & BIG SISTERS
Mrs. Hanna and the "Littles" went to Wawa to meet with their Big Brothers/Big Sisters. The students always have a great time working with their "Bigs" and building positive relationships with a mentor.
ROYAL READERS
Highland Park is so proud of our ROYAL READERS! Our students have been reading independently, with friends, with older buddies, with their teachers, on Amira and EPIC, and even presenting some awesome ROYAL READING in a Reader's Theater presentation. Highland Park knows that Readers are Leaders, and we encourage everyone to read at school and at home! Students can borrow books from the Highland Park Library to read at home, or get books for your whole family to enjoy at our community libraries: Sellers or the Municipal Library! Keep reading everyone!

TIME FOR LONG SLEEVES & AUTUMN LEAVES
From turkey hates to scavenger hunts, the students at the Kindergarten Center participated in a variety of autumn activites!
TODAY'S STORY IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY...
Various staff and administrators took time to read a story to our kindergarten students! When school leaders and personnel take time to read aloud to young students, they not only model literacy skills but also show their commitment to creating a nurturing and supportive learning environment. This simple yet meaningful gesture can inspire curiosity, spark imagination, and make children feel valued and encouraged on their educational journey.

UPPER DARBY STUDENTS AND TEACHERS SUPPORT THE ARTS
3rd Annual DCIU ArT Showcase
On Thursday, December 6, hundreds of students, teachers, parents and community members from across Delaware County attended the Delaware County ICU's third annual ArT Showcase. All pieces were created by students with special needs. The A and the T in the title represent the term Assistive Technology, which was used in some of the pieces displayed.
Said Maria Edelberg, the DCIU"s Executive Director, "Assistive Technology empowers special needs students to express themselves through art, breaking barriers and unlocking their unique creativity. DCIU's ArT Showcase gives these students a creative outlet to express their thoughts, feelings, and creativity in ways that celebrate their individuality and potential.
