A big THANK YOU to EIPS Volunteers!
National Volunteer Week takes place April 27 to May 4. On behalf of the Board of Trustees at Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS), I want to say a giant thank you to all EIPS volunteers. This year’s theme is Volunteers Make Waves, and that’s certainly true in our Division. No matter whether you’ve chaperoned a field trip, helped out at a hot lunch day or provided support in a classroom—every time you’ve stepped in a school—you’ve made a ripple effect that washes over your community. These waves of positivity, hard work and dedication build up and make a momentous impact on a student’s experience at school.
So, thank you again for being a part of our ocean at EIPS. The waves you’ve made—and will continue to create—all contribute to our collective goals of ensuring learning and working environments sustain student learning and amplifying the importance of public education in our province. This National Volunteer Week, I encourage everyone to celebrate the hundreds of volunteers and thousands of hours put into supporting student growth and achievement at schools across the Division.

FSE Volunteer Appreciation
To show our heartfelt appreciation, we will be celebrating all of our wonderful volunteers during our school assembly on Thursday, May 23. This special event is a small way for us to say a big THANK YOU for everything you do.
We hope you’ll join us so we can recognize and honor your incredible contributions. Your support helps make our school a better place for everyone—and we are so grateful to have you as part of our community.
Bike Safety
With the warmer weather finally here, it’s the perfect time for students to dust off their bikes and enjoy riding to school, around the neighborhood, or at the park. As more bikes hit the road and sidewalks, it’s important to keep bike safety top of mind!
Here are some key reminders to help keep our young riders safe:
1. Wear a Helmet:
A properly fitted helmet is the best way to protect your head. Helmets should sit level on the head and have a snug fit — not too tight, not too loose!
2. Check Your Bike:
Before heading out, give your bike a quick safety check. Make sure the brakes are working, tires are properly inflated, and the chain is in good shape.
3. Be Visible:
Wearing bright-colored clothing and using reflectors or bike lights — especially in the early morning or evening — helps others see you more easily.
4. Follow the Rules of the Road:
Ride on the right side of the road, use hand signals to show turns, and always obey traffic signs and signals. If you're riding on sidewalks, be respectful of pedestrians and always yield the right of way.
5. Ride with Caution:
Watch out for cars backing out of driveways, road obstacles, and other riders. Always stay alert and aware of your surroundings.
We encourage families to talk with their children about safe biking habits and to practice safe routes together. Let’s all work together to make sure this biking season is a fun and safe one!
Bus Safety
The nicer weather means field trip season is upon us! As students get excited about upcoming adventures, it’s a great time to review some important school bus safety tips to help keep everyone safe during the ride.
Here are a few simple reminders for students:
1. Stay Seated:
Once you're on the bus, find your seat quickly and stay seated facing forward. Keep the aisle clear of bags and feet.
2. Use Inside Voices:
Keep noise levels low so the driver can concentrate. Loud noises or sudden shouting can be distracting and unsafe.
3. Listen to the Driver and Supervisors:
Always follow the instructions of the bus driver or any supervising staff. They're there to help keep everyone safe.
4. Keep Hands and Head Inside the Bus:
Never put anything outside the bus windows — not even your hands.
5. Get On and Off Safely:
Line up calmly, use the handrail when getting on and off the bus, and be aware of your surroundings — especially in parking lots or near roads.
6. Speak Up If Something’s Wrong:
If there’s ever a problem, let the bus driver or a supervising adult know right away. Your voice helps keep everyone safe.
