WHPE Update July 2023
"Good to Grow"
Good to Grow:
Greetings WHPE Members,
I hope this newsletter finds you in high spirits as the warm, sun-kissed days of summer are finally upon us! With the vacation season in full swing, I wanted to help you focus on doing enjoyable activities to help you make the most of this summer break with your loved ones. From adventurous outings to relaxing moments, here are some fantastic ideas to create lasting memories together. Your challenge this month is to make time. We are all given the same 24 hours, it’s up to you to make those hours count. I know many of us pick up extra work during the summer, but please make time for what’s important. Bonus points given if you not only create memories, but core memories that will last a lifetime.
Beach Bonanza:
Pack your beach towels, umbrellas, and sunscreen for a day of fun in the sand and sun.! Build towering sandcastles, splash in the refreshing waves, and engage in friendly beach games. Spikeball, bucketball, and a frisbee are all family favorites. Don't forget to check the lakeshore for treasures, a net to check out creatures and bring some delicious snacks and refreshments to keep everyone energized and hydrated throughout the day.
Nature Escapes:
Take advantage of the beautiful weather and explore the great outdoors. Plan a hiking trip to a nearby national park or nature reserve, and immerse yourselves in the tranquility of nature. In 1982, the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries created the term shinrin-yoku, which translates to “forest bathing” or “absorbing the forest atmosphere. Capture breathtaking views, encounter local wildlife, and bond over shared experiences while creating an appreciation for the environment.
Picnic Pleasures:
Pack a delightful picnic basket filled with tasty treats and find a picturesque spot at a local park or garden. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon indulging in delicious food, playing outdoor games, and simply basking in each other's company. Bring along some cards or board games to add an extra element of fun and friendly competition. My daughter’s favorite thing to do is make a charcuterie board for our family to enjoy.
Cultural Adventures:
Discover the rich heritage of your city or neighboring towns by visiting museums, art galleries, or historical landmarks. Engage in interactive exhibits, learn about different cultures, and broaden your horizons. Many places offer guided tours specifically designed for families, making it an educational and entertaining experience for all. Here in the Northwoods, Lac du Flambeau holds interactive Pow Wows every Thursday night for everyone to enjoy. Indian tacos are one of my favorite things to eat.
Thrilling Theme Parks:
For those seeking an adrenaline rush, visit a nearby amusement park or water park. Dive down towering water slides, scream with joy on thrilling roller coasters, and take part in various exciting activities. With a multitude of rides and attractions catering to all ages, these parks guarantee a day of laughter and excitement. Or check out a local state/county fair. Just don’t let your competitive edge get the best of you trying to win that stuffed animal.
Movie Nights Under the Stars:
Transform your backyard into a cozy outdoor cinema with blankets, pillows, and a large screen. Set up a projector and enjoy a movie marathon under the twinkling stars. Don't forget the popcorn and your favorite snacks to complete the authentic cinema experience. You can even take turns choosing movies to make sure everyone gets to watch their favorites! This is still a favorite for my teens.
Creative Workshops:
Let your creativity shine with arts and crafts workshops. Engage in pottery making, painting, or DIY projects that encourage imagination and self-expression. These workshops are often available at local community centers or art studios, and they provide a great opportunity to bond while unleashing your inner artist. Hoping to take my first basket weaving class this month.
Remember, the most important aspect of summer vacation is to have fun, relax, and spend quality time with “your peeps”. I wish you an incredible summer filled with joy, laughter, and endless adventures.
Yours in making memories,
Mary Wentland
