Jessica Granger Named 2024 Withington Award Recipient
The Richard W. Withington Award was established by Mr. Withington in 1981, and is presented annually to honor an employee of the Hillsboro-Deering School District who is recognized as an ambassador from the schools to the larger community, and who has achieved excellence in their work, contributed significantly to the general welfare of students in ways above and beyond the normal requirements of their job, offering students and adults alike a model of strong professional behavior.
This year’s Withington Award recipient is a graduate of Hillsboro-Deering High School, who returned to the district as a Middle School Special Education Teacher in 2015. They have a deep commitment to service and demonstrate that through their work both in the district and also out in the wider community. They give generously of their time and personal resources to provide students with a broad range of opportunities and experiences, from developing personalized learning to coordinating school dances, from establishing the H-DMS Kindness Club to being the MC of the Talent Show, from facilitating after school clubs to helping organize the End 68 Hours of Hunger Program, this educator seeks out opportunities to enrich the lives of students. In the wider community this educator is a tireless volunteer who spends countless hours working at the Hillsboro Food Pantry, facilitating a youth group at a local church, and serving on the board for Hillsborough Community Thrift. They also served as Co-Chair of the Hillsborough 250th Committee.
This educator was nominated by many, both district employees and members of the larger community. To quote one of their colleagues, this educator “serves as a role model for those of us in the school community. She demonstrates her kindness, caring, passion, professionalism, enthusiasm, and dedication to the community every day.”
It is an honor to announce Ms. Jessica Granger as the 2024 Richard W. Withington Award recipient.

Hillsboro-Deering Greenhouse Update
The Greenhouse Project is well underway and alive on campus. Construction began in March with site preparations and ground work. The exterior of the structure is complete, and the interior and area around the greenhouse will be the next focus for the project. The project will likely near completion the end of June with some summer programs potentially able to utilize the space this summer.
Students and teachers will be able to utilize the structure for classes when we return to school after summer break in August. Students are already figuring out options to contribute to and utilize the growing space, and they eager to be utilizing the space as soon as possible!
The greenhouse will be utilized by teachers K-12 on campus to teach students about where their food comes from, plant nutrition, growing practice, plant life cycles, and much more. Many teachers are already teaching about these topics, but now have the opportunity for more of a hands-on approach that is not as limited by seasons and outdoor growing conditions.
We will continue to include updates about the project, and hope you look forward to seeing the space at the fall open house on August 28th!
School Food & Nutrition Program
Hello Hillsboro-Deering Families and Household,
Please see the attached document regarding charging on student accounts and meals at school. We have made a change in response to guidance we received from the New Hampshire Department of Education that likely impacts your student!
It is hard to believe, but the end of the school year is just around the corner. Please be sure you have access to view your student’s cafeteria account balance through EZ School Pay to pay off any outstanding balance on student accounts and to have a positive balance as the school year ends. Balances will carry over from school year to school year.
Thank you for helping the Food and Nutrition Program in balancing our books as the end of the school is quickly approaching! If you need any help, please don’t hesitate to contact me!
Again, thank you so much!

End 68 Hours of Hunger Program
Our local End 68 Hours of Hunger Program serves the students of SAU 34 which includes: Hillsboro-Deering Elementary School, Hillsboro-Deering Middle School, Hillsboro-Deering High School, and Washington Elementary School.
The Problem
Childhood food insecurity is a national problem, it occurs when children receive insufficient food on a regular basis; in many cases missing meals entirely. After a while, these children also experience “fear of hunger” that affects their behavior as much as physical hunger affects their bodies. There are more than 6.4 million food-insecure children in American households today.
How End 68 Hours of Hunger Helps
This program puts nourishing food in the hands of school children to carry them through the weekend. Each bag of food, provided through food and financial donations, provides two breakfasts, two lunches, and three dinners for a child, with some left over to share!
SAU #34 School Climate Survey
Dear SAU #34 Families:
We want to hear about your experience with your student’s education. We invite you to participate in completing the School Climate Survey. This survey includes questions about your student’s learning, school safety, and interpersonal relationships, as well as your attitudes about the institutional environment and your personal involvement in school. Your responses will be very helpful in improving student relationships, learning conditions, and the overall school environment.
We invite all parents, guardians and caretakers to complete this survey for our schools. The survey is completely anonymous and brief; it contains 22 questions and takes about 10-15 minutes to complete. You can take the survey online by using the following unique school link: Family Climate Survey 2024
All your responses are completely anonymous. We have no way to connect you to your answers, and results will only be reported as group responses. There are no right or wrong answers. We just want to know about your personal experiences. Responses will be housed securely and locally on the District network.
As you respond to each item, think about your own personal experiences as a parent, caregiver or guardian at your student’s school. We hope you will take the time to provide us with this valuable information. Feel free to call your student's school office you have any questions. Each school’s total survey results will be used to inform and develop appropriate strategies, procedures, and/or programs to enhance our school climate. Please submit your responses before June 30th.
Thank you for your time and participation!
