Pickles Reading Challenge
Your child is invited to participate in our Pickles Reading Challenge! The Portland Pickles are a collegiate wood-bat baseball team based here in Portland, and they's love to have you come watch them play!
We want to encourage kids to read, read, read! Reading includes reading a book on your own or with friends, listening to an audiobook, being read to by family and friends...so many options! See the images below for more details (hopefully this came home with your child prior to Spring Break - if you'd like another copy, just email Ms. Hughes at vhughes@pps.net or your child can ask her directly). This challenge runs from March 17-May 14.
Next Year's Staffing
Staffing during times of financial challenge is always a hard time of year. Every single Beach staff member gives everything they have to our community and contributes greatly to students' success.
Unfortunately, Beach has lost its Title I funding, which was used this year to fund our educational assistants and our behavior intervention specialist. Our PPS Equity Funds also decreased by 2/3, which were used to fund part of our school secretary and our social worker. This year we were provided four half-time interventionist funding from the central office and next year we will have one half-time interventionist. While these losses will absolutely impact the support the we provide students, we are committed to doing everything we can to continue to support students' academic and social needs.
One shift in grade level configuration is that we will be staffed with three teachers at the immersion 4th and 5th grade level versus four teachers for our current immersion 3rd and 4th grade. This means that we will have three 4th/5th immersion blended classrooms next year. Grades K-3 will have one class each.
Please see below for our staffing allocation for next year:
You Are Invited - FIT Assessment
Our school will soon participate in a district-wide opportunity for reflection called the Fidelity of Implementation Tool (FIT) Assessment. The FIT is a tool that measures the extent to which a school implements many of the systems and practices that have been identified as critical to equitable and inclusive schools that ensure high levels of learning for all students.
During the FIT, two support staff from the district will spend the day with us, talking to a variety of people in the school community to get an understanding of our practices. Family and community members are invited to participate in a conversation with the district staff in order to respond to predetermined questions that are asked as part of the assessment.
We will use the data we collect from this process to inform our School Continuous Improvement Plan and other work at the building level. The district will look at district-wide data to highlight areas for further intentional support.
It would be great to include you. Are you able to join an in-person meeting on Wednesday, April 30 from 2:00-2:20? If you are, please let me know! Reply to my Remind text message or email me at njohnson@pps.net.
Talking Circle Newsletter
The latest Talking Circle newsletter is here! This edition includes details about our upcoming STEAM Family Night, as well as our annual Public Hearing and Needs Assessment Survey. We encourage staff, community members, students, and families to complete the survey and share your valuable input.
School Social Worker Corner
All Beach families are invited to join the North Portland Health and Wellness Fair! It will be held on Saturday, April 26, 11am-3pm, at Rosa Parks Elementary located at 8960 N Woolsey St. Many community partners will be present to support our North Portland families in accessing resources including food boxes, supports for registering for bill discounts, and chiropractic care.
