Martin's Big Words: the Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
This award-winning picture book does a great job of bringing the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to an elementary level from which all students will be able to learn something new about this important civil rights hero. This book is available for checkout at all 12 elementary school libraries!
Library Book Tips
Hi-Lo Books
Are you teaching grades 3 - 5 and finding it difficult to get your struggling readers to check out books within their zpd? Many of those students are embarrassed about the books that fall within their reading level because they seem like books for young kids. No worries, guide your students to the books in our libraries we call "hi-lo" books. They are high interest, low reading level books, and I have been working to add more to our libraries. These books fall within a second or third grade reading level, but are extremely engaging topics for upper elementary students. Even though they are written by numerous authors, we are grouping them together using the call number of F SAD or PB F SAD for the publisher, which is Saddleback. Ask the librarian at your school for more help finding them if needed.
Help your school librarian...
Please have your students bring their basket of books to return as early as you can on your library day. Your school librarian can do a lot more with your students if their books are returned before your library time!
AR Tip of the Month
AR Bookfinder
As parents are entering the holiday season and might choose to purchase books for their child, students often believe they cannot take an AR test on the books they own because they do not know the AR level. Let parents and students know about the website AR Bookfinder, which allows them to type in any book they have and find out if there is an AR test for it and if there is, it will also let them know the AR level of the book! The URL is https://www.arbookfind.com.
5th Grade Library Lesson!
Evaluating Websites
I am excited to be going into 5th grade classrooms to offer a library lesson focused on research skills. As students work on research writing, there may be times you would like them to use websites. This one-hour lesson focuses on evaluating websites for credibility. Please coordinate with the other teachers at your school so I can teach all of the classes of a school on the same day. Each teacher needs to fill this out so I can schedule your individual time. If you are not able to find a day and time that works, please feel free to reach out to me and we can work together to schedule a time.
