Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students in the U.S. who entered the 2024 competition by taking the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

"Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success," said a spokesperson for National Merit Scholarship Corporation. "These students represent a valuable national resource. Recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success."

Elizabeth High School hosted the Friendship Cup Marching Band Competition on Saturday, Sept, 16, 2023, with a total of 18 bands of all sizes competing. The unique event featured evening performances after a clinic session with judges for each band earlier in the day. This was the first year for Elizabeth to host the event after a 10-year gap during which the Friendship Cup event was hosted elsewhere.

These clips, captured by EHS communications intern Luke Chisholm, feature some of the bands during their evening performances, which featured a wide variety of artistic expressions using music, choreography, flags and unique props – from an interpretation of the literary classic “Fahrenheit 451” (Wheatland High School) to a marching-band version of the recent film “Don’t Look Up,” (Castle View High School) as well as musical field trips to South Asia (Fountain-Fort Carson High School) and East Asia (Elizabeth High School).

Singing Hills Elementary School conducted its first Competent Coyote assembly of the year on Sept. 20. One student in every class was recognized for going above and beyond to be Academically Prepared, which was the featured competency for August. The Coyote Competencies are Singing Hills' way of introducing the concepts that become the district's Profile of a Graduate.

Along with a certificate, each student who earns Coyote Competency award this year will also receive a voucher for a free ice cream cone courtesy of the Elizabeth Dairy Queen, thanks to the sponsorship help of Amanda Schmitz, preschool teacher.

The Elizabeth High School Performing Arts Department presents its Fall Music Showcase starting at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 28, at the EHS cafetorium.

The event is the first of the school year for both the EHS choir and instrumental music programs and will feature several choirs and band groups.

The National Junior Honor Society chapter at Elizabeth Middle School will host a Field of Flags fundraiser for the Disabled American Veterans.

For every $10 donated by Oct. 23, NJHS students will receive a flag sponsoring a specific veteran. All flags will be planted on the EMS front lawn for the week of Veterans Day. Anyone interested in donating may do so directly through the DAV's school-sponsored page.

NJHS students are also planning to accept in-person donations from students during lunches leading up to the donation deadline too. Those donation days will be announced soon.

The EHS auto-shop program will host its second annual Car Show from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 24, at the EHS parking lot. The show is free to attend and will feature a car competition, food trucks and lawn games. Here's a video from last year's inaugural car show.

Tickets to the Nov. 26 Broncos-Browns game -- in Section 128, row 38 -- are up for grabs in a drawing to support the EHS boys soccer team.

For a donation of $10 per entry, participants will be entered into the drawing. Tickets for the drawing will be sold at the Oct. 6 homecoming football game.

Time is running out to enjoy one more afternoon at Coors Field -- and benefit Elizabeth Schools.

The Colorado Rockies are offering two tiers of specially priced tickets for the Sunday, Oct. 1, game -- the last of the season -- against the Minnesota Twins, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Elizabeth Education Foundation.

First pitch is 1:10 p.m. (and the Denver Broncos play at Chicago in an early game, so there won't Mile High Stadium traffic to deal with!). The Elizabeth Education Foundation sponsors the annual STARS banquet to celebrate students for good citizenship, classroom grants for teachers, and scholarships for graduating seniors.

The reigning NBA champion Denver Nuggets are hosting a pair of Elizabeth Education Foundation Community Nights at Ball Arena this season. Elizabeth families can buy tickets, starting at $27, for the Nuggets games on Nov. 3 vs. the Dallas Mavericks or Jan. 5 vs. the Orlando Magic.
