Thanks to those of you that were able to help with our duty free lunch for teachers this week! They truly enjoyed getting to have lunch together outside of the cafeteria for a change. Thanks again!! Our drone team is competing in the 2nd annual drone competition on Saturday, April 5th! Best of luck to our team. We hope you have a wonderful Spring Break! Students will be dismissed at 12:30 on Friday, April 11th and will return to school on Monday, April 21st.

Afterschool will now be open again on Tuesdays and Thursdays! Thanks for your patience as we worked to hire new folks to fill these positions!

Our End of Grades Test for grades 3-5 will be the last 10 days of school. We will begin with 5th grade taking Science on Friday, May 16th. The following week, May 20th students in grades 3-5 will take their reading test and on Thursday, May 22nd, those grades will take their math. Students that test over days will test on the days in between.

It is imperative that your child be here on those days. Students should be well rested, on time, and eat a healthy breakfast. Our cafeteria will be open at 7:15 am. Please mark your calendars and make sure students are present and discuss using their strategies and having great stamina so they do their best and can attend the EOG BASH! (see info below) In years past, some of our students needed to retest to get the few extra points to pass. We will definitely keep families posted!

Students in grades 3rd-5th that use all of their strategies, do their best, and work hard on their Reading, Math, and Science (5th only) tests, will have the opportunity to go on a field trip to the Waynesville Rec Center on May 28th! We did this trip last year, and the students loved it! They were able to swim (they swam in the shallow end of the pool), played kickball outside, basketball in the gym, and hang out with their friends. It is a trip students earn by simply doing their very best on our important EOG tests at the end of May. Can't wait to see how they do!

We are working on our stamina at BES! Younger students are working more independently and on longer tasks and upper grades students are working on being able to have stamina when reading and working out math problems. Proud of all of our students' efforts!

Our second annual Books on Break event is happening May 12- May 15th. This is a HUGE undertaking for our librarian, Mrs. Haas, because each student in our school receives 10 free books! That is 5500 books to go through, organize, and get ready for our students. We could really use some help! The week prior to this, the books will arrive. Would you be willing to spend some time helping to sort and organize books? If so, please email myself (awatson@haywood.k12.,nc.us) or Mrs. Haas (dhaas@haywood.k12.nc.us). You are also welcome to call the school at 828-646-3448.

We are getting excited about our annual Spring Fling event on Friday, May 2nd! We will have games, inflatables, food trucks, Legacy dance, Waynesville Rec Base Camp, singing, and more! We hope you will make plans to come!!

We could use donations for prize candy and cakes for our cake walk. K-1 will be bringing in bags of individually wrapped candy and grades 2-5 will bring in cakes. If you can help, please turn them into the office. Cakes we will take up the week of Spring Fling. Candy, we can receive when it is convenient for you. Please no cakes that need refrigerated.
