Scott 6th Grade Center's Motto- "We Enter to Learn and Leave to Achieve"
What Has Been Happening on the Second Floor?
In Mr. Harre's Social Studies classes, the students are learning about Ancient Egypt by constructing a Sphinx. They also wrote their names in a cartouche with hieroglyphics.
In Ms. Nagy's science classes, students are learning about weather. We are explicitly talking about weather anomalies and the implications of global warming on a global scale as well as local impacts. Students are also taking turns pretending to be meteorologists as they learn about extreme weather and how to look at radar maps and storm fronts.
Mrs. Marchesani's math classes are finishing the percent unit. They are working hard on finding percent of a number, which will help with finding discounts at stores. As the year winds down, we will be reviewing topics learned throughout the year. We will also be adding and subtracting integers, which will get them ready for 7th grade.
Mr. Dougherty's math classes just finished converting between fractions, decimals and percents. They also completed some of the leveling tests for next year. They our currently working on adding, subtracting and multiplying integers.
Ms. Holdsworth's and Ms. Hall's ELA classes have entered the world of the 1600s as Sam Collier has begun his journey to the New World in the book Blood on the River. They are enjoying the book and continuing to hone their skills as they look forward to the start of 7th grade.

May Behavior Focus- Follow Directions the First Time
On Thursday during lunches this week, Mrs. Lamothe and Mr. Altland spoke to the students about expectations for the for the rest of the school year. Following directions, the first time, will be our focus.
Students that meet that expectation will be allowed to participate at the dunk tank during our Field Day on June 4th. Students that struggle to follow directions (3 strikes rule) will not be able to throw at the dunk tank. A Google Form has been shared with the staff to add names when students do not follow directions. We are hopeful that all of our students are able to follow directions for the last few weeks of school so that they can get Mrs. Lamothe, Mr. Altland and other staff VERY wet at the dunk tank.
THANK YOU!
We want to give a huge THANK YOU to all of our families that treated the staff last week. The treat table on Wednesday and our lunch on Friday were fantastic. Thank you for taking the time to make us all feel special. We are truly blessed to have such great families! Thank you!

Hear them Out: Foster open communication about vaping
Here are some tips to help parents initiate an intervention to optimize their child’s ability to hear them:
- No matter who you are, this will be hard. And that’s okay. Any confrontation of a hidden behavior or addiction will be messy and take time to resolve. Expect your child to be embarrassed, outraged, anxious, fearful, sad, or completely withdrawn.
- Consider widening the circle. The goal is to give your child the best possible chance of hearing your concerns and being open to getting help. Having a third party that genuinely cares about your child in the room could really help, especially if dynamics at home have become tense. Is there any trustworthy person outside the family that your child still respects, trusts, and feels safe with? It could be a coach, a grandparent, a member of clergy, a counselor, or even a family friend.
- Prepare a quiet, safe time and place. Find a place where everyone will feel safe and able to focus. This might require meeting outside the home. whether it is at the school counselor’s office, a church, or even a park that is not busy.
- Tell the story – don’t accuse. Simply share what you have observed. Focus on what was said or done and the impact. Reserve bringing out any discovered paraphernalia for when it comes up in the story. Avoid discussion of motives, accusations, etc. Stick to what was done and how you have observed it affecting each person. Between people sharing, give your child an opportunity to acknowledge what they heard.
- Invite your child to share. Listen to find the struggles and challenges that they are attempting to get vaping to solve. Is it a distraction from anxiety? Is she just lonely, and the only friend(s) she has enjoy vaping? And… how long has it been going on? Has it already become an addiction? Vaping causes its own problems, but it is also attempting to mask, dull, or compensate for something else. Listen to what is going on beneath the vaping. Work together to find new ways to resolve these deeper needs.
- Seek help. Look for help that starts to meet the needs you see. Counselors and therapists are a great place to start. Your child may benefit from mentors, safe places to go before/after school, service activities or team sports.
