Magnolia Students Learn about the Solar Eclipse
Students at Magnolia Elementary participated in several activities during the day of the solar eclipse. Mrs. Serena's third-grade students discussed the ways in which a total eclipse differs from an 88% eclipse experienced in Alabama. Then, students created solar eclipse models that were, according to Mrs. Serena, "Out of this world!"
In addition, fourth graders in Mrs. Holt's English Language Arts classes learned about eclipses by documenting throughout the day the lighting within the classroom, reading The Total Solar Eclipse: A Stellar Friendship Story by Jayme Sandberg, and analyzing an informational passage explaining different types of eclipses. Finally, students created a diagram of an eclipse.
Congratulations to the March students of the month! These students were nominated for their exemplary behavior, dedication to academics, demonstrating leadership qualities, and having a positive attitude. Congratulations to the following students:
Kayden Latham
Jordyn Windham
Tinsley Gamble
Ava Jane Peacock
Regan Gentile

HTHS Engineering Academy Students Earn Honors
Seven teams from the HTHS Engineering Academy participated in the Central Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair at UAB on March 2nd. These senior design students worked hard all year to solve their selected problems. Jacob Mullinax, Sam Brooks, and Elliott Greene received third place in the engineering category. The team of Alex Davis and Beck Peterson and the team of Clark Box and Luke Hansen both received honorable mention in the engineering category. Ruth Gregory and Caroline Krayer received honorable mention in the engineering and transportation category. Garrett Reese received a special award for his environmental project. Jacob Mullinax, Sam Brooks, and Elliott Greene will move on to present their project at the state science and engineering fair at Auburn University in April. Congratulations to all of our outstanding senior design students. We are so proud of how well these students represented Hewitt-Trussville High School and our Engineering Academy!

Paine Elementary Students Experience Solar Eclipse
After a day full of interactive and engaging learning, 2nd grade students are able to explain that a solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the earth and the sun, blocking some or all of the Sun’s light from reaching earth. From watching it live and creating models to enjoying fun themed snacks, these students had a great day of learning.
Magnolia Fifth Graders Take a Deep Dive into Ancient Civilizations
Magnolia fifth graders in Mrs. Hook's English Language Arts classes recently engaged with nonfiction texts to explore the ancient Aztec, Maya, and Inca civilizations. Through research, students delved into various aspects of these cultures, focusing on farming methods, social classes, and architecture. As a culminating project, each student created a codex, mimicking the ancient manuscripts typically written on bark, to present and share the knowledge they gained. According to Mrs. Hook, "This multidimensional approach provided students with a deeper understanding of these ancient civilizations and their significance in history."
Have you heard about Neighborhood Bridges?
Neighborhood Bridges is a wonderful resource where we can post a need out into the community and our students needs can be filled by the general public. This is completely anonymous, but allows the community to have an active role in meeting the needs of TCS students. The kindergarten students were able to apply their new knowledge of the word "vertices" used in order to help 5th graders find polygons around the rooms. It was a great shape collaboration!
HTHS Students Compete at UAB Egg Drop Competition
On April 6th, some of the Engineering Academy Students competed in the UAB Egg Drop competition. Students had to design and construct a device that could safely hold an egg for a 55 foot tall drop from the top of the UAB Engineering Building. Along with engineering an egg holder, students also had to write a two page research paper on the physics behind the egg drop. The team of Logan Lochte, Michael McKnight, and Hayden Law received the award for most creative engineering design. The team of Katelyn King, Vada Posey, Victoria Lopez, Harmony Hawkins, and Sophie Cate Jones received the overall 3rd place trophy.
Magnolia Students Celebrate National Schwa Day
National Schwa Day, April 7th, was a success for Magnolia students thanks to Mrs. Angie Seeley, Literacy Coach, who visited several classes and led the students in activities to commemorate this unique day. Students practiced finding the schwa in multi-syllabic words, read a book about this most common sound in the English language, and completed a sorting challenge.
