John F. Kennedy High School
Principal Update - March 10, 2025
From The Principal...
Student Service Learning
Dear Cavalier Teachers, Students, Parents, and Families,
Did you know that, in addition to meeting academic requirements, Maryland students must complete at least 75 hours of Student Service Learning (SSL) to graduate? Students who go above and beyond—earning 240 or more SSL hours—receive the prestigious Meritorious Service Award and a special purple tassel to wear at graduation.
Beyond fulfilling a requirement, SSL provides students with meaningful opportunities to contribute to their communities while developing important life skills. Engaging in service helps students build empathy, leadership, and a sense of responsibility. When students serve others, they gain a broader perspective and realize their role in creating a better world. These experiences shape them into active, engaged citizens—something we strongly encourage at Kennedy.
Upcoming SSL Opportunities & Important Dates
March 19 – SAT Day & In-School SSL Opportunities
- All 11th graders will take the SAT for free on this day.
- 9th and 10th graders will have alternate activities and learning opportunities.
- Seniors can earn up to 5 SSL hours by participating in school-sponsored service projects in the morning.
SSL Completion Deadline for Seniors – April 21
Our goal is for all 12th graders to complete their SSL requirement by Spring Break (April 21). Students can check their StudentVUE account to see how many SSL hours they still need. Any senior who has not met the requirement will work with their counselor to finalize a plan before returning to school on April 22.
In-School SSL Activities on March 19:
Seniors can participate in a variety of projects, including:
✔ Organizing and inventorying materials in the art closet and science labs
✔ Assisting with book room organization
✔ Supporting various school departments with setup and organization
Additionally, students can explore external service opportunities through the MCPS Volunteer Center at www.Montgomerycountymd.gov/volunteercenter. There, they can find meaningful service projects that align with their interests—including career exploration opportunities that also count toward SSL hours!
For any questions about SSL hours and opportunities, students can see Ms. L. Wilson, school counselor and Kennedy’s SSL Coordinator. [Read below in the Counseling Office Updates to see more information about SSL hours.] We are all here to support our students in reaching their graduation goals. We encourage every student to engage in service and make a difference!
Thank you for your support,
Vickie Adamson

Departmental Updates
Story and Photo Taken From MCPS News Bulletin
John F. Kennedy High School dance teacher Kendra Smith was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts. She was one of 14 public school educators in the Washington, D.C. region to win grants of between $2,500 and $5,000, which are awarded annually to public high school teachers who bring new and exciting performing arts experiences to students.
Smith’s grant-winning arts program at Kennedy—Fostering Relationships Using Intergenerational Techniques (FRUIT)—is a collaboration with the ClancyWorks Dance Company and the Jewish Council for the Aging: InterAges Program. Between 15 to 20 of her students will participate in weekly classes with a mixed group of older adults, using creative movement to share stories from their own lives. This interaction will help students express themselves through dance, more actively participate in the arts and build connections with mentors from a different generation.
Smith has known Dr. Adrienne Clancy, founder of ClancyWorks, since she taught master classes at Towson University, when Smith was an undergraduate student. “Collaborating with Dr. Adrienne Clancy and her talented teaching artists, students and community members have enriched the lives of all participants in ways that can only be witnessed in movement,” she said. “Being a host for a second year in a row has also allowed me to develop as a teacher. This unique project has created a space for people from all walks of life to build lasting relationships and foster a community of artistic and cultural expression, using dance as a vehicle.”
Smith, a former professional ballet and modern dancer who holds a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Dance Performance and Education, and a Master of Arts in Dance Education, is in her 16th year as a Maryland Pre-K-12 teacher, with the last three of those spent at MCPS. Her specialty genres are contemporary ballet, modern, lyrical and concert jazz. She also teaches tap, hip-hop, partnering, yoga and creative movement. At Kennedy, she teaches a variety of dance classes, including dance fine art and dance for physical education, and also sponsors the school’s majorette dance troupe.

9th Graders Attend College Field Trips with WorkSource Montgomery
Almost 100 students participated in field trips to American University and Goucher College on Friday, March 7th.
The WorkSource Montgomery Career Advising Coach and the MCPS Career Advising Team, along with members of the John F. Kennedy High School staff supported students in a great college preparation field trip.
Students toured American University and Goucher College. Above are a few photos that capture the students' experiences.
The students were AMAZING and asked a lot of thought-provoking questions. They enjoyed touring both American University and Goucher College with the Montgomery County Career Advising Program (MoCoCAP) and came away inspired and informed.
ATTENDANCE MATTERS
# Show Up!
We want all students to be in school. Teachers and staff honored students who improved their attendance by treating them to breakfast in the Cavalier Cafe! Want to be a student who is awarded in this way? #ShowUp!
Please remember that school starts at 7:45 AM, and students are expected to be in their first class promptly at that time. We recommend that you have your student in the school building by 7:30. This will allow them plenty of time to be in class and ready to learn.

Many local kids can’t participate in sports because of the cost of equipment. To help, we are collecting new or gently used sports gear for those in need. All donations will go to the Leveling the Playing Field Foundation, which provides equipment to youth in our area. Your support can make a difference!
The collection box at Kennedy High School will be located in Mr. Mendez’s classroom, Room 2336.
