SUMNER HIGH SCHOOL
Weekly Newsletter 2023-2024
SUMNER HIGH SCHOOL INSTRUCTIONAL PRIORITY:
Each student’s academic growth will be monitored and advanced through engagement in Sumner’s four shared instructional principles: close observation and analysis, evidence-based writing, higher order questions, and academic conversations.
SUMNER HIGH SCHOOL CULTURAL PRIORITY:
Sumner High School, a community of excellence, will inspire unity through diversity by building authentic relationships.
Celebrating Black History Month
Black History Month, with its roots beginning in 1926, is an annual celebration of African American achievements. During this time, we pause to reflect on the numerous contributions African Americans have made throughout history in our local community and our nation.
This year, our theme will be centered around Celebrating African Americans and the Arts. Each school within Hillsborough County will celebrate Black History Month throughout February in a variety of creative ways. Emphasizing Black History Month annually ensures that students will develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of African Americans' significant and important contributions.
Sumner's Unity Day On the Road at Shields MS!

Data Chat Week for the Stingray Nation!
Students were encouraged throughout their classes to reflect on their progress in Semester 1 and to set goals and create plans for success for Semester 2. During all lunches on Friday students could share their data, goals and success plans with adults for an opportunity to enter a drawing for gift cards. What an awesome and powerful opportunity to engage in conversations with our students! Congratualtions to all students who won the gift card raffles!

Social Media Expectations/Policy
We wanted to remind our students and families that any type of social media disruption and/or degradation will NOT be tolerated at Sumner HS. We are requesting that parents review the below HCPS social media policy with their children. Any student found in violation of the social media policy is subject to a consequence. We ask that you support this important initiative.
Per HCPS Student Code of Conduct--
Social Media Disruption (SMD): This section was added to assist schools in addressing the increasing volume of disruptions and behavioral offenses related to the use of social media. SMD is defined is the intentional use of digital devices such as cell phones, computers, tablets etc. to send, post, or share negative/harmful content that creates an adverse impact on a school’s learning environment. Negative/harmful content can in turn cause discomfort or humiliation, or unreasonably interfere with the school’s ability to maintain routine safety and order on campus.
- This offense includes the transmission of negative/harmful content regardless of who the initial recorder was; i.e. if a student is sent the information and then in turn sends out the same information, they too are held accountable.
- This offense includes the intentional posting or sharing of messaging that is insensitive, inappropriate, harmful, and/or slanderous to individuals and/or to groups.
- This offense is not dependent upon the subject(s) awareness of being recorded.
- Negative/harmful content includes, but is not limited to: School fights, Bathroom incidents, Vaping/smoking, Hazing, Intentionally creating a disturbance, Destruction of property or Sexual conduct.
Policy found on page 58 of the HCPS Student Code of Conduct.
Student Parking Information
Students may obtain a current year parking permit by visiting the Sumner HS website PARKING PERMIT form and $20 must be paid to MyPaymentsPlus.
Students will then bring the required documents, the completed form and proof of payment from MyPaymentsPlus to the Office of Student Affairs to receive a parking permit.
Student vehicles WITHOUT a current year parking permit are subject to receiving a ticket and a loss of parking privileges beginning on Monday 8/28/23. The picture shows what a current year parking permit looks like for your reference.
