A MESSAGE FROM DR. ELLISON
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Your voice matters! Please take a moment and fill out the 5 Essentials Survey. This is an opportunity to provide feedback on your experiences with Glen Grove. In addition to this survey being part of our public school report card, it is also used by our school improvement team to inform our improvement planning process. The more voices/responses the better!
Our state assessments are on the horizon. This year the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) will be given on March 6th, 7th, and 10th. The science assessment is only for fifth-grade students. The Illinois Achievement of Readiness (IAR) assessment will be done on April 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th. This includes three math and two literacy assessments for third, fourth, and fifth grade. These assessments include both multiple-choice and written response questions that represent rigorous grade-level learning. If you are interested in exploring the types of questions on the assessment you can find practice tests at https://il.mypearsonsupport.com/practice-items/.
As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions, comments, or concerns.
In partnership,
Kate Ellison
Glen Grove Principal
Math Placement for 2025-2026 School Year
The process to determine your child’s math placement for next school year has started. Math placements for next school year are now viewable in the parent portal of PowerSchool.
Here is a direct link to the PARENT PORTAL in PowerSchool. Once you are logged in to your child’s account, navigate to the Math Placement section (as pictured here).

Dress for the Weather Everyday!
...and pack extra shoes, sock and pants for those muddy days!
Will it rain? Will it snow? Will the temperature be in 50's or the 20's?
Be sure to check the weather report to make sure your child has everything they need to be warm and dry!
It's getting muddy out there! An extra pair of shoes & socks along with a pair of pants sent to school with your student can help keep your child comfortable at school and avoid phone calls home looking for dry/clean clothes. 🙂
Please note that if there is snow on the ground, recess is as follows:
- Boots and snowpants - OK to play in the fields
- Boots only - must stay on the woodchips (can play on equipment)
- No boots - must stay on the blacktop
If your child wears boots to school, don't forget to pack gym shoes.
PLEASE!!
This time of year brings with it a lot of clothing! Please label your child's coat, hat, boots, etc. to make returning any lost items back to the student easier. Thank you!!
School use of Electronic Communication Devices
It is the intention of the Board of Education to provide a safe and secure learning environent for the students in its schools and to structure the possession of cell phones and other electronic devices so that student welfare and safety as well as the educational environment are not adversely affected.
Therefore, every classroom in the district maintains a telephone that students are able to access with teacher permission. The possession and use of all cell phones and wearable communication devices at the middle and intermediate school level are to be used in emergency situations and not merely for convenience. Students must have parent permission prior to being able to bring a cell phone to school. Please reference the Middle and Intermediate School Cell Phone Use Agreement Form.

Did you know that most norovirus is spread by people who did not wash their hands after going to the bathroom?
How it is spread:

- Eating food or drinking liquids that are contaminated with norovirus.
- Touching contaminated objects or surfaces and then putting your unwashed hands in your mouth.
There is no specific medicine to treat people with norovirus; drink plenty of liquids to avoid dehydration.
Norovirus Symptoms
Norovirus symptoms usually develop 12-48 hours after exposure and can include:
- Vomiting

Most people get better in 1-3 days. Stay home until 2 days after symptoms stop. You can be contagious for up to 2 weeks after infection. STAY HOME IF SICK.

Dental Exams at School
Dental health is an important part of a child’s overall health – we love to see our students’ healthy smiles!
This spring, District 34 is bringing Orland Park Dental Services (OPDS) to our schools to provide dental exams to any of our students who need them. As a reminder, the State of Illinois requires students in grades K, 2, and 6 to submit proof of a dental exam – but these in-school appointments with OPDS are open to any and all students! They provide dental services to children on public aid as well as those with private dental insurance.
The exams are provided by caring, licensed dentists, hygienists, and dental assistants with state-of-the-art portable dental equipment. OPDS has been providing in-school dental services since 1999 and their healthcare professionals ensure a clean, safe, and comfortable environment within the schools.
Parents and guardians who complete the consent form do not have to join their child at the appointment (but you are welcome to come in). If you have questions or need assistance, contact District Nurse Shari Stadler.
Mandatory Health Forms for 2025-2026 Incoming 6th Graders
All incoming 6th grade students MUST have a physical examination (within the last 12 months), including required vaccinations, turned in prior to the first day of school in August, 2025. Your child will NOT be able to start middle school until the physical form is turned in.
Additionally, a dental exam completed after December 31, 2024 will complete the 6th grade dental exam requirement.
If your child's health forms are already complete, you can turn them into the Glen Grove health office any time between now and the last day of school. They will be forwarded to your child's middle school with their health file. If you have any questions, please call Mrs. Hastings, Health Coordinator, at (847) 657-2394. Click here for the health exam form.
NEWS FROM THE LRC
OSOB Family Night Event Recap
A huge thank you to all the families who joined us for our Family Night on February 7! It was a wonderful evening filled with creativity, learning, and fun. Attendees had the opportunity to explore the amazing recycled robots on display and participate in engaging activity stations. A special thank you to the GG teachers who contributed their time and energy to help plan and run these stations.
We were thrilled to have representatives from the Glenview Public Library, GBS Interact Club and Steam Robotics Academy attend the event. A heartfelt thank you to the WB/GG PTA for sponsoring the author visit, which was definitely a highlight of the evening. It was incredible to see the students so engaged, asking insightful questions and interacting with the author.
We’re also excited to share some great news: a possible companion book to A Rover’s Story is expected to be released in 2027! We can’t wait to dive into Fly’s perspective of Mars and continue the adventure.
Thank you again to everyone who made this event so memorable!
OSOB Last Trivia Winners
I’m excited to finally share the winners from the last week of our One School, One Book trivia. Congratulations to Citlalli from Ms. Burns' class, Emily from Ms. Presslak's class, and Evelyn from Ms. Peterson's class. Well done!

During this special event, Ms. Messner will discuss her latest book, History Smashers: Earth Day and the Environment, on the very day of its release! This is a wonderful opportunity for students and families to meet an acclaimed author whose science-themed books have been named to the NSTA/CBC list of Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K-12.
Copies of Ms. Messner books, including the newly released History Smashers: Earth Day and the Environment, will be available for purchase and signing.

SCIENCE NEWS
Our 3rd grade Gator scientists are wrapping up their biology-based unit, but still have more science fun to go! Our wonderful art teacher is helping our students bring to life their creatively adapted organisms we've never seen the likes of. Thank you to Ms. Hausman for helping 3rd grade yet again with this merge between science and art. Ask your scientist what ecosystem their critter lives in and the interesting adaptations it has to survive there. Until our next science unit!
Down the 4th grade hallway, our Gator physical scientists will be getting ready to take a different look at energy starting next week. Stay tuned for much more!
Our 5th grade biologists are doing double duty...getting ready for the Illinois State Assessment (ISA) in a few weeks while also continuing to explore how energy and matter are transferred through ecosystems via food chains. We've been dazzled by better understanding the role of decomposers in the world and will soon explore the interconnectedness of feeding relationships in ecosystems via food webs. So much more to explore but time flies when you're having fun. Unit 3 is on the horizon so stay tuned for SO much more science!
