Welcome October
Wow! The first month of school zipped by! We entered October with a flurry of....not snow, but excitement and energy! October is filled with plenty of amazing activities to keep us all moving! Engaging classroom lessons, creative projects, outdoor exploration, team-building events--and let's not forget Homecoming--prove our students and staff have hit the ground running.
But don’t just take my word for it—take a look at the photos below that capture some of the incredible moments at Mercer School.
Thank you to our dedicated staff and enthusiastic students for making the start of the school year so special. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year has in store for us!
Here’s to a fantastic October!
Changing Colors Inspire Trip to Mercer School Forest
On Friday, October 4, we celebrated the changing of colors with a trip to the school forest all morning. Many thanks to our amazing staff for setting up stations before school and making this an amazing student experience. The only complaint I received was next year it needs to be all day.
Below are some pictures of the various activities from the school forest as we celebrated autumn:
Mr. Griffin combined art and good old-fashioned leaf jumping. Students jumped into the leaf pile and artistic photos were captured.
High School students on a nature scavenger hunt planned by Mr. Davis (above)
and preparing for Capture the Flag led by Mrs. Syverson (below)
Students learn how leaves get their color during a chromatography experiment led by Mrs. Engler. (High school students above, Kindergarten and 3rd grade below)
The "Grand Finale" - fall leaf confetti!
Culinary Arts
Cheesecake? Yes, Please! Culinary Arts students displayed their creations in the school office before offering the treats to staff who readily devoured them!
Union Trades Career Fair
On September 25, 11th and 12th-grade students interested in learning more about trades careers attended the Upper Peninsula Construction Council's "Hands-On Union Trades Career Fair" hosted at Gogebic Community College.
Log-a-Load for Kids
On October 3, students in 3-6 grade took a field trip to a forest in Pence to learn all about careers in forestry. About every 6 years, the Log-a-Load for Kids program comes to Iron County. The program is organized by the Northwest chapter of the Great Lake Timber Professional Association. Students rotate through multiple stations to learn about logging, forestry, wildlife, and how it impacts our local economy.
Money raised from the sale of harvested wood during Log-a-Load for Kids is donated to the Children's Miracle Network.
State troopers presented at Log-a-Load for Kids

Talent Show
We are holding a Mercer School talent show on October 23. We encourage students of all ages to participate. Whether it’s playing an instrument, singing, dancing, magic, jump rope or something completely different, we’d love to celebrate all of our talented students!

Attendance Matters
For children and teens, attending school isn’t just about getting an education. It’s about developing their whole selves—emotionally, socially, and personally.
Attending school regularly and in person gives students the ability to follow daily routines, as well as connect with friends, peers, teachers, and others outside their family circle. They’re able to engage and interact, to use their brains and try new things. They can be part of a team. They have a purpose.
Help your child be their best self. Show up to school every day.
