GATE Strategy
Curriculum
As students have been shipwrecked and began their survival adventure stranded on a deserted island, they have some difficult decisions ahead. Last week they met their basic needs by creating shelter to protect them from the elements. This week they will choose their materials and construct viable shoe wear to protect their feet to travel around the island. Students have realized that all materials are not used equally. A lot of items have multiple purposes, but students will need to use out of the box thinking along with problem solving abilities. Using the Engineering Design Process, students will have to test their designs and make improvements as needed to be successful. This is just in time to get them ready to analyze materials and infer which items offer the best structure to build a sturdy bridge and cross to the other side of a deep ravine. After each challenge, students will be awarded health points based on the quality and results of their decision making. This will prep them for the last lesson of the month which is hopefully a successful rescue with utilizing clues to solve problems and puzzles to get them off the island. Ask your students each week about their trials and tribulations of being stranded.
