Vose Owl Notes
Family Newsletter - December 2024
Note From the Principals
Dear Vose Families,
At Vose, we try our best to be transparent and provide our families with accurate information. To that end, I want to share some news regarding the much-loved large Oregon white oak tree that stands between the school and the covered play area.
The district recently had the tree evaluated by two independent arborists. Both specialists indicated that the tree is in poor health, due to significant carpenter worm and other insect damage, and presents a risk to our community:
“The presence of carpenter worm galleries at the base of several major limbs warrants a probable likelihood of failure within the next five years. The likelihood of impacting a student is rated as medium due to the frequent occupancy of the recess area. The combined likelihood of failure and impact is somewhat likely. The consequences of failure would be severe.” - Rick Till, Todd Prager & Associates
“I recommend removing the Oregon white oak (Quercus garryana) located to the south of Vose Elementary due to the poor structural health and condition. The removal of this tree will eliminate the risk of a large tree part failing and striking a person or structure. The oak yields a high-risk rating when using a scale of low, moderate, high or severe.” - Kyle Offerdahl, SavATree
Due to the potential risk to students, staff and the community, it is with a heavy heart I share that the tree will need to be removed over winter break to minimize any disruption to the school day.
If you have questions about the removal, you’re welcome to attend our Coffee with the Principals meeting next Tuesday, December 10 at 7:45am at Vose when we will share additional details and have a representative from the district’s Facilities Department available to answer questions.
We know how much this tree has meant to the community over the years. In the next few weeks, we’ll support students through this change as we take commemorative photos with our students, staff and the tree. We’re also planning on saving some remnants of the tree, and we’re looking for your ideas on how you’d like those remnants incorporated in our school. Please add your ideas to this project page on Engage BSD.
Thank you for your understanding as we work to prioritize the safety of our students and staff.
In partnership,
Monique Singleton, Principal
Ellen Arnold, Assistant Principal

Staff List of Favorite Things
As the holiday season approaches, some of you have kindly inquired about ways to show appreciation to our wonderful staff. In response, we’ve compiled a list of staff members’ favorite things, which you’ll find attached below.
Please know that there is absolutely no obligation to purchase any gifts. A heartfelt note of gratitude or kind words from you or your child means the world to our staff and is often the most cherished gesture.
We’re grateful for the strong sense of community at our school and your continued support. Thank you for helping make our school such a warm and wonderful place to learn and grow.
Vose Student Emcees!
Way to go, Bella and Emilio!
Speaking with Congressman, Ron Wyden!
Amazing Presenters!
Last month, our very own Vose 5th graders, Bella and Emilio, were the emcees at the recent Children's Institute Champions for Children fundraising luncheon at the Portland Art Museum. These brave students brilliantly presented to over 450 other attendees! It was an uplifting afternoon for the Children's Institute partners, elected officials, educators, and community members to celebrate children and learning!
Vose Vision Screening - December 11
Vision screening will be conducted by the Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation (OLSHF) for students grades PreK-5 on December 11th, 2024. Students who wear glasses should wear their glasses for the screening. Parents will only be notified if follow up care is recommended based on vision screening results.
Please notify your child’s teacher if you prefer that your child not participate in this vision screening. Students who are absent during school screenings will be screened individually with parent request.
BSD Options Schools Application Deadline
The deadline to apply for the 2024-2025 Option school lottery is Friday, December 13, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. Applications are available online. Students must reside within the Beaverton School District boundary or currently attend a Beaverton School on an approved Interdistrict Transfer in order to apply to an Option school.
Students may only apply to one Option school. They should give careful consideration to their choice of school. Once an application has been submitted, no changes will be allowed. We strongly encourage online applications.
Applications must be received online or in the Learning Options office no later than Friday, December 13 at 3:00 p.m. PST.
For more information on Option schools, please visit the BSD Options webpage or the individual option school website.
Inclement Weather Information
When we experience inclement weather, school schedules can be affected — either by a delayed start, early release or school cancellation. The district makes decisions based on the ability of:
The district to operate school buses safely.
Students and parents/guardians to drive safely.
Students to walk to schools or bus stops safely.
Staff to get to work safely.
Decisions are made for the entire district. However, we encourage families to make transportation and attendance decisions for their children based on their own assessment of travel conditions at their locations.
School delays or closures are typically communicated by 5:30 a.m. For the latest information:
Check the district website. A page pop-up will be posted if there’s a change in school operations. You also can find inclement weather protocols and snow routes online.
Look for a notification on ParentSquare.
Follow us on the district’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.
Tune into media outlets for updates.
Thank you for your cooperation.
December Assembly- Timber Joey Special Guest!
We welcomed Timber Joey, mascot of the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns, at our assembly on Friday. Timber Joey read from the children's book "Be Kind" as part of our Kindness in the Classroom focus on being kind and caring this month. He also was able to answer students questions, including how long he has been Timber Joey (since 2008) and why he doesn't have a costume like other mascots (makes it easier for him to use the chainsaw to saw the wood discs after each goal!).
Parking Lot Drop Off and Pick Up Reminders
Thank you for continuing to be safe and patient as you drop-off and pick-up in the parking lot. It is always a challenge as we try to move a large amount of people through a small space.
A couple of reminders:
Please park your car if you are planning to get out to go pick up your students. Please do not park in the car pick up lane or block the bus lane in the back of the school
The back parking lot is only for buses and staff parking. Parents should not park in that lot because we have staff that need the parking spots as they come in for their shift at 2:00pm.
When waiting at the end of the day for pick-up, please pull as close as you can to the car in front of you so we can fit as many cars as possible into the pick-up lanes.
Park in the front school parking lot or in the neighborhood streets, but not in nearby apartment complex parking lots. Cars may be towed if they are parked in No Parking areas.
Use Crosswalks for safety. While watching after school dismissal at Vose, our District Transportation Safety Team have noted that a large group of parents pick up their students in the lawn in front of the school and walk west on the south side of Denney Road, crossing Denney at multiple places between the school and SW Queen Ln in the middle of the street, not using a crosswalk. We highly encourage all families to cross Denney Road at the crosswalk in front of the school. We have crossing guards at Denney Rd as well as Lombard Ave. to help ensure children and families safety. We care about your safety!
Vose Green Team Plastic Drive
Vose is keeping Plastic Film from landfills with Ridwell this spring! As part of this limited-time drive, you can bring these types of Plastic Film to school on October 29th or 30th and Ridwell will make sure they stay out of landfills and are turned into new decking materials instead! Start collecting these items at home now.
You can also help Vose recycle our school’s Plastic Film for the entire ‘24/’25 school year! Be sure to use get.ridwell.com/Vose to join Ridwell with an at-home membership by December 15, 2024. If we sign up 10 or more new members by this date, we will be awarded monthly Plastic Film pickups for our school next year!

New Volunteer System - Please Apply Today!
In the Beaverton School District, our top priority is the safety and well-being of our students and staff. To improve that safety, we’re adopting a new visitor and volunteer management system called Raptor Technologies. Along with the new system, we’ll be updating some of our related policies.
For Volunteers
We’ll no longer be using the MyImpact platform. To continue volunteering in BSD, all volunteers must reapply through Raptor and consent to an Oregon criminal records check. Please do this as soon as possible. We need the entire summer to process thousands of applications and background checks. If you wait to reapply, we may not have enough time to clear your application by the start of school — meaning you will not be able to volunteer right away and your school may not have enough volunteers for back-to-school activities. Again, please prioritize submitting your application today.
English Application: https://apps.raptortech.com/Apply/ODkwNTplbi1VUw==
Español: https://apps.raptortech.com/Apply/ODkwNTplcy1VUw==
Also, to provide the safest possible environment for our students, we’ll be requiring all volunteers to go through this process, including the criminal records check, every two years. Once in the Raptor system, you’ll receive an email notification when it’s time to resubmit.
Finally, we’re now requiring that all volunteers, regardless of their frequency of volunteering, apply through the Raptor system, including one-time guest speakers, career day participants, science fair judges and volunteers for activities like art lit, class parties, field days, fun runs, OBOB competitions and more. Any volunteer who has direct or indirect contact with our students will need to be cleared through Raptor.
For Visitors
Every person who visits our schools and district facilities will need to provide an ID (e.g. driver’s license, passport, consulate card) which will be used to conduct an on-the-spot check of the Sex Offender Registry. After clearing the check, you’ll be presented with an ID badge with your name and destination. You’ll also be required to sign out in the main office when you depart.
We hope that you understand and appreciate the need for these increased security measures. This new system is now in effect, so we need volunteers to reapply now to ensure a smooth transition.
Student Vision or Hearing Concerns
If parents/guardians, students, or teachers have a concern about a student’s ability to see or hear, a District Nurse or Health Assistant will provide a screening and resources for follow up if needed. Students in the newcomer program will have access to a program-wide vision screening.

Information from the School Nurse
Welcome to a new school year from your School Nurse! To ensure your child’s health and safety I would like to share a few items with you.
HEALTH CONCERNS: Please inform your School Nurse of any severe allergies, surgeries, accidents or new health problems that occurred during the summer months or that may occur during the school year.
ILLNESS: Please remember to keep your child home when ill. Students may not attend school with a fever greater than 100.4 F° and must be fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medicine before returning to school.
If your child is sick with a diagnosed communicable disease, please notify the school as soon as possible. This notification will greatly assist others who, due to medical reasons and/or treatments, have weakened immune systems and may require immediate and specialized care.
MEDICATION: Medication may be administered to students who require it during the school day. Parents must transport medication to school in the original container and complete a Medication Authorization Form. Please provide emergency medication if prescribed for your student.
IMMUNIZATION: All students must be up to date with immunizations before the state exclusion day mid-February 2025. Students who are not up to date will be excluded from school. Please review your student’s immunization record with your health care provider and provide any needed documentation.
