Fosterable Pet of the Week
9593 Mighty Moose
75 days in boarding without a foster :(. No reason other than 3LP has a lot of animals. So, it's way past time this boy gets a foster for some great exposure to life in a home and better info/pics/video for his adoption bio.
What can we tell you about Moose? From our behavior team "This is a great dog. Super friendly and playful with other dogs and loves people. He can play rough and might run over smaller dogs just because of his size, but overall he does great."
Moose is a goofy, confident, and fun 2-year-old Rottweiler mix. He is great with kids and does a wonderful job adjusting his energy to the space, situation, and people he is with. At 90lbs, he is a big boy, but that just means more of him to love and snuggle with. He is perfection on a leash, attentive to his handler, and respectful when meeting new people. He knows no stranger! Due to his size, a foster home with no small dogs or cats would be best, although he would love to have a playmate and a yard to hang in. Moose loves treats, which will make his continued training on commands easier.
WATCH Mighty Moose here to see just how amazing he is! Can you open your home to him?
The Need to Socialize and Expose
Socialization looks the same for puppies and adults. Always go at the animal's pace and keep new encounters brief, mindful of his body language. Signs of fear or anxiety include tucked tail, flattened ears, lip licking, yawning, shaking, crouched body, whining, hair standing up, attempting to run or hide. Pushing too much too soon floods the animal, causing them to shut down and create negative associations. Move slowly and allow your foster to continue to graduate from less challenging to more challenging exposures. If your foster is hesitant but not defensive, go at a gradual pace to create positive experiences.
There are exposures in the home and the backyard if your puppy isn't fully vaccinated. You can also go for drives, and hold the puppy for a walk at the park, or I even had one person who would take the puppy out for dinner in her tote.
With our adult rescues, past negative exposures might cause a defensive reaction. This could look like barking, lunging, snarling, or growling. If you see these behaviors, consult the 3LP Behavior team for guidance.
Don't be cheap with the treats! Give praise and rewards for looking past their fear and engaging with whatever is scary. Never force your dog to interact until ready. An example is my foster who was super curious but scared of the sound of the shower. We left the bathroom door open when my daughter was showering, and after much thinking, the pup belly crawled over to the shower. My daughter opened the door, put out her hand, and talked to him. He again belly crawled over to her, but once he saw what was happening, he was on his feet, tail wagging and trying to play in the water.
If overly stressed, remove the animal from the situation and help him relax again. Below is a simple checklist to get you started, although any new experience means you are working on socializing. The wonderful Behavior Team at 3LP is always available for support. Don't forget the medical team now takes nail trim appointments, another great exposure for your foster to take a drive, meet new people, see something new (nail clippers), and have his feet handled.

Cats needing some foster love
There is a desperate need for fosters willing to take in kittens and/or a mama with kittens. This is kitten season here in Houston, and so many little lives need your help. 80% of kittens in the wild won't reach their first birthday and will die painfully on the streets.
We need dedicated fosters willing to help these babies have a chance at life!

Dog Day Out Program
Break a dog out of boarding!
Pick up a dog from 3LP's boarding at 509 Rustic Lane in Friendswood, and take that pup on an outing of your choosing. Run errands, take a walk in the park, give the pup a bath, or head to the dog store! Head home to chill in the house and play in the backyard. Go through the drive through at McDonald's, Starbucks, or other dog friendly spots and get a special treat. Snap as many pictures and videos as you can to pass along for the adoption profile. These help tremendously in getting a dog in boarding adopted quicker.
For the dog, Dog Day Out program can:
- Decrease kennel stress
- Help burn off energy
- Make the dog feel loved
- Learn valuable skills like getting in and out of a car, walking on a leash, and staying focused despite surrounding distractions
- Improve socialization and decrease fear from not being used to every day life in the community
For you, the Dog Day Out program can:
- Give you a reason to get out with Mother Nature
- Allow for fun with a dog when your lifestyle may not allow you to have your own
- Provide a sense of purpose in helping a rescue animal
- Reduce your own stress
- Make for a FUN day or couple of hours!
Curious about the program? Contact jessicak@threelittlepittiesrescue.org for more info.
