Can you believe that we are at the beginning February 2020? We are now one month into the new year (and new decade), so it is the optimal time to consider your professional learning needs for spring 2020 and beyond. Our February newsletter contains information on spring opportunities; we have also included a few save-the-date announcements for summer 2020. Our complete summer schedule will be posted by April 15.

Save-the-Date: West Alabama Regional School Counselors' Conference--Survey Closes February 4!
We are excited to announce that we will host a West Alabama Regional School Counselors' Conference on Monday, June 22, 2020 at the UA/UWA Regional In-Service Center (260 Kilgore Lane, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401). Please look for more information to come soon, including a request for conference presentations. This will be a free event to support the school counselors within our region.

ASIM STEAM Video Competition--Open Now! Ends on February 28th!
We are excited to announce the 1st Annual ASIM STEAM Video Competition! Please see the attached flyer for details and share with your teachers! (The flyer is also posted at http://www.inservice.ua.edu/announcements) This is a great chance for teachers to show off how they incorporate science, technology, engineering, art, and/or math (STEAM) into their classroom instruction and how Alabama Science in Motion (ASIM) aids them in their classroom STEAM goals! This competition will run through February 28th. The earlier teachers begin posting their videos, the more time they have to collect shares and likes!
ALSCA Regional Workshops-Spring 2020
ALSCA is excited to announce our Regional Workshops Spring 2020 with a very timely focus for support of all students, K-12.
· Workshop title: Building Resiliency: School Counselor Response and Intervention for Students' Mental Health Needs
· Presenters: Dr. Ellen Chance (Capella University, Florida Atlantic University, Lamar University) and Dr. Summer Perhay Kuba (Liberty University)
· Workshop topics: crisis prevention and intervention, anxiety, depression, trauma, self-harm and suicide, evidence based practices for risk assessments, other mental health concerns
· 3 regions and dates available:
o Tuesday, March 3 - Calhoun Community College - Decatur
o Wednesday, March 4 - University of Alabama at Birmingham - Birmingham
o Thursday, March 5 - University of South Alabama - Mobile
· 5.5 NBCC hours available

2020 UA SLIS Book Bonanza for the Black Belt--Applications due by February 28!
2020 SLIS Book Bonanza for the Black Belt (and Beyond) Book Give Away Program is Accepting Applications from School Libraries
In March 2020, the School of Library and Information Studies @ The University of Alabama will award over $20,000 in brand new children’s and teen books to at least five public school libraries in the Black Belt region of the state and two school libraries in an economically deprived area of Alabama outside of the Black Belt Region via the SLIS Book Bonanza for the Black Belt (and Beyond) program.
School Librarians in the Black Belt counties of Alabama and other economically disadvantaged areas of the state are encouraged to apply for free books that will be awarded by Dr. Jamie C. Naidoo, Professor at The University of Alabama School of Library and Information Studies.
Interested school librarians can download and complete the application sheet and email it to jcnaidoo@slis.ua.edu with “Book Bonanza” in the subject line or fax it to (205) 348-3746. Applications must be received no later than midnight on February 28, 2020. Applications are available on the program website: http://blackbeltbookbonanza.weebly.com/ . Note there is a separate application for schools in the Black Belt Region of the state and another application for low-income schools outside the Black Belt region of the state.
By March 5th, at least 7 winning school libraries will be selected. Each winning school library will receive over $2000 worth of free NEW children’s and/or young adult books. Once notified, winning school librarians will have until April 6, 2020 to claim their free books from the School of Library and Information Studies @ The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Books will need to be picked up in Tuscaloosa.
Launched in 2009 by Dr. Jamie Naidoo, the SLIS Book Bonanza for the Black Belt is an annual program that provides free books to school libraries in the Black Belt region each academic year. In 2019, the program donated $20, 822 in new books to elementary, middle, and high school libraries in Alabama. Literacy Reimagined Inaugural Conference: March 2020
The following literacy conference is being sponsored by the South Alabama Regional In-Service Center. Registration is open to all In-Service Centers throughout the state. The conference will be at the USA Gulf Shores Campus in March 2020. The cost of the two day conference is $175.00 per person. A few of the keynote speakers include Natalie Wexler, author of the Knowledge Gap, and Nancy Young, creator of the Ladder of Reading.
