School Newsletter Term 1, Week 7
Friday 15th March 2024
Kia ora Koutou,
We hope this newsletter finds you well as we move forward into the Autumn season.
It was great to have our Senior Swimming Sports. It was good to have our students dive into the much-awaited event. It's a time for our students to showcase their aquatic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship. It was great to hear fellow students cheer each other on and celebrate their dedication to the sport.
We have also had Manawatu Tennis in our Kura for our Akonga. They served up successful coaching sessions. Whether the students were a novice or a seasoned player, the experienced coach provided personalised instruction to enhance their skills and foster a love for the game. What an ace experience!
Our Basketball sessions had the students ready to dribble, shoot, and score. Led by knowledgeable, experienced players from the Manawatu Jets, these sessions aim to develop fundamental skills, teamwork, and strategic thinking.
I extend a big thank you to our dedicated Board of Trustees for their unwavering commitment to our school's mission and vision. Their leadership and guidance play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our educational community. We appreciate their tireless efforts and collaborative spirit.
Our Parent Teacher Association continues to be a driving force behind our school's fundraising success. Through their support and involvement, they enrich the academic, cultural, and social experiences of our students.
As we embark on these exciting endeavors, we remain committed to fostering a nurturing environment where every student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Together, we embrace the opportunities that lie ahead for our school whanau and community.
A reminder school closes at 12.15pm next Tuesday and our parent teacher conferences are next Wednesday and Thursday.

Full STEAM Ahead!
This year, our West End children will be working on their Mana Aotūroa and Whakamana in our new Wāhi Aotūroa (Innovation Space). Over the last few weeks some classes have been carrying out STEAM activities (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) with our new VEX Robotics kits and EPro8 equipment. We also have a lot of coding activities with the use of our Bee-bots, which is a fun way to learn about giving directions and an early introduction to Robotics.
VEX Go
VEX Go is a construction system that teaches the fundamentals of STEAM through fun, hands-on activities that help young students perceive coding and engineering in a fun and positive way! Children are given instructions on how to build a variety of objects and machines that move with motors, or can be coded to move or carry out specific tasks.
EPro8
We have 5 classroom kits that have everything from different length aluminium rods, pulleys, wheels, crank handles, axles, gears, joiners, bolts and wingnuts as well as an electronics kit. We will be learning to design and built a variety of structures and mechanisms using this equipment. This will be helping us to develop our kotahitanga by working with others as well as learning about how things work and developing our engineering skills!
We are looking forward to sharing our STEAM journey this year with you! We have some very excited children who have used it already and can't wait for all of our tamariki to continue their STEAM journey at West End School.
Senior Swimming Sports
On Monday Te Wao Nui o Tāne had their swimming sports.
It was a wonderful opportunity to show case students swimming skills and as a team show Kotahitanga as we support each other to try our best.
A great event, thank you to Mrs Black for her organisation, to West End Aquatics for their support and Awatapu College for letting us use their students for timekeeping.
