Junior Touch Rugby Competition
Year 9 & 10 Touch Rugby Reports
Year 9
At the end of every year the Hastings Boys' high School PE department organises a junior touch tournament. The event is always thoroughly enjoyed and competitive amongst the students and this year was no different. Eight form classes competed against each other for the title of Best Form Class Touch Team. All the games are played in great spirit and high pace with the winners of each round moving towards the final. This year after a hard-fought battle the 9SF form class took out top spot. The students of 9SF whilst playing or supporting from the side lines should be proud of their victory and the achievements made this year.
Year 10
In a thrilling and closely contested match, 10CC narrowly edged out 10BC with a final score of 3-2. Both teams displayed outstanding effort, skill, and sportsmanship throughout the game, embodying the core Ākina Man values of respect, perseverance, and teamwork.
The game was a showcase of quick decision-making, sharp passing, and impressive defensive strategies from both sides, keeping all those watching on the edge of their seat. While 10BC fought valiantly and came close to leveling the score multiple times, 10CC’s determination saw them secure the win in the dying moments of the match.
It was a fantastic display of interclass camaraderie and competitiveness, with students clearly enjoying the spirit of the tournament. The match highlighted not only the talent within Year 10 but also the positive culture fostered through sport at Hastings Boys' High School.

FIRST Lego League Challenge 2024
Our first ever team of five Year 9 students represented HBHS in the FIRST Lego League Challenge 2024 robotics competition's Central Regional tournament on Saturday 2nd November 2024 held at Havelock North Intermediate School.
Almost every Primary and Intermediate school in Hawke's Bay had multiple teams competing across three rounds of robot games and presented their Innovation Project ,discussing a solution to an environmental issue. The HBHS team worked well together, displaying the FIRST core values and Gracious Professionalism throughout the day.
The team consisting of Dehan Otto, Oliver Keane, Jack Smith, Kian Cotton and Luke Trowbridge (away that day due to football), finished ranked 8th in their robot games out of 35 teams.
Year 11 student Aken Bambaranda Guruge was also involved in the event as a returning FLL student alumni member who volunteered his time for the event as well as acting as one of the judges. He is also providing mentoring and coaching for the FLL team as they prepare for the national tournament.
Four members of the team will compete at the FLL NZ National tournament to be held in Auckland on 30th Nov - 1st Dec. They have been working hard with Aken over the last few weeks to improve their robot games and develop their project to a higher level.
Good luck to the team.

Beautiful Tunes
A few times this week I have heard the piano in the hall being played beautifully and so I investigated and found Shelby Sorensen-Pineaha sitting practising. He seemed to be playing modern tunes and sometimes more classical ones. Shelby is taking piano lessons and enjoys playing. Thank you Shelby for the lovely tunes that drift down towards the school office.
