GIRLS WHO CODE CLUB
The Girls Who Code club for grades 3-5 will be starting January 22nd.
Coding is computer programming. The girls will work to complete different projects on the computer and will practice a variety of skills like critical thinking, perseverance, and problem solving. Our first "program" that they will complete is Music & Sound where they will work to create their own songs on the computer and put their created song in a music video that they create.
Permission slips went out last week, but if you need another one please see Miss Durbin or the front office.
HEALTHY FUTURES CHALLENGE
Let’s Get Moving! The Healthy Futures Challenge is a program that helps your child build strong bones and muscles by playing for 60 minutes every day. Your child records their physical activity on the Healthy Futures Log and turns it into their teacher at the end of the month and earns prizes. The Challenge takes place in the months of January, February and March. A letter explaining the program and the activity log for January was sent home with all children on Monday, January 7th.

Happy New year!
Most 2nd -5th grade students have finished their STAR reading tests (to find their AR level) for 3rd quarter. We have started our LEGO CREATION TOWER where students get Legos to add to the tower by checking out and returning books, and extra Legos for taking AR tests on those books. We are also currently in a round of Maker Spaces - Science Technology Engineering Arts and Math (STEAM) which encourage creative thinking, problems solving, etc.
Our next book fair will be February 22nd-March 8th.

5TH GRADE SPONSORSHIP
Calling all caring hearts!
The 5th grade at Big Lake Elementary participates in a wonderful field trip each spring where we go to Homer for 3 days and 2 nights. Students get to learn about ecosystems, tidal animals, digital photography, among many other things. They get to ride in a boat in Kachemak Bay, sleep in yurts, hike, swim, and learn. The cost of the trip is $240, and some of the students are struggling to come up with the funds. We are looking for community members that might be willing to sponsor some or all of a student’s trip. If you are interested, please call Shari at Big Lake Elementary (892-9700) and tell her you have a caring heart! Thanks in advance!
4TH GRADE NAEP TESTING
4th grade will be participating in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on January 31, 2019. This test is given to 4th and 8th graders across the nation. Students will be assessed in either math or reading and the results are released as the “Nation’s Report Card”. A letter was sent home with all 4th grade students on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 and is also available in this newsletter. If you have any further questions please contact Mrs. Lovelace at 892-9714.
