Community Report on Class Sizes
Introduction
Lincolnshire-Prairie View School District 103 is dedicated to providing high-quality education to all students, emphasizing both academic excellence and social-emotional growth. The district is committed to fostering an environment where every student can thrive, supported by dedicated teachers, staff, and a robust curriculum. The purpose of this report is to inform the community about the current class sizes in grades K-5 and how these sizes support student growth and achievement while being fiscally responsible to our taxpayers.
Class Sizes
Class sizes have remained relatively consistent throughout the school year. District data indicates that the largest class size in the K-5 grades was 26 students, which increased to 27 by the end of February. The "trigger" column represents the class size threshold at which discussions would be initiated to determine the most effective way to support the classroom during the school year. If a class is nearing this threshold before the start of the school year, the district would evaluate the need for adding an additional section to reduce class sizes. This information is published monthly in the board meeting agenda packet.
Comparing Class Sizes to Other Districts in the Consortium
When comparing the class sizes in District 103 to other local districts in the Stevenson High School consortium, we find that our class sizes are similar with those in neighboring districts. The information below is taken from the 6-day enrollment report for the following schools:
Facilities
While space constraints exist in the schools, there is some flexibility to add additional sections should class sizes approach or exceed established guidelines. We are mindful of the space limitations and actively monitor enrollment trends to determine if a facility project may become necessary. Based on current data, enrollment has been relatively flat over the past few years and we have no data to indicate that will change in the near future.
Student Achievement Remains High
One of the most significant indicators of the success of our educational model is student achievement, which remains high with the current class sizes. District 103 has consistently ranked among the top performers in the region, with students demonstrating strong academic performance. The achievement data reflects that class size, while an important factor, does not hinder the ability of our students to succeed academically. Below are charts showing the assessment results from the 2024 Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) that is administered starting in grade three. The information can be found on the Illinois Report Card.
Classroom Support: Professional and Other Support Staff
To ensure that our students receive the best educational experience possible, District 103 employs a range of professional support staff in classrooms. This includes classroom associates in kindergarten, special education associates, reading and math specialists, enrichment coordinators, and Multilingual Specialists, who work alongside our teachers to provide personalized attention and support to students. These staff members play a critical role in addressing the diverse needs of students, particularly in larger classrooms. By providing additional support, we can maintain a learning environment that prioritizes individual attention and fosters a positive learning experience for all students.
Tax Rate Comparison with Surrounding Districts
District 103’s tax rates are designed to balance the financial needs of the district with the desire to maintain a high quality educational experience. When compared to neighboring districts, District 103 offers an exceptional education without overburdening taxpayers, and we strive to manage our resources efficiently to keep tax rates as low as possible while still meeting the needs of our students.
Kindergarten Sections for 2025-2026
Kindergarten sections are determined annually based on registration and enrollment data collected in April. This year, registrations are trending significantly lower than in previous years, with a projected enrollment of 119 students. Based on this information, the district has planned for six sections, with approximately 19–20 students per class. Staff members impacted by the reduction in sections will be reassigned to other positions within the district to best meet student and staffing needs. Should actual enrollment exceed current projections, the district will reevaluate the number of sections to ensure class sizes remain within our targeted guidelines for kindergarten.
Conclusion
District 103 is committed to balancing class sizes, student achievement, and fiscal responsibility to create the best possible learning environment for our students. We continue to achieve high levels of student success due to the dedication of our staff, the support we provide in the classroom, and our strong educational programs. We remain focused on providing a high standard of education for every student, and we are committed to making sure that our class sizes are manageable and conducive to learning. We invite the community to join in the conversation, ask questions, and engage with us as we work together to continue improving our district for the benefit of our students.
Next Steps
- The district is actively monitoring class sizes in the second and fourth grades, as they are nearing the established threshold numbers.
- The district is prepared to allocate additional staff to these grade levels should these numbers continue to rise.
- The district acknowledges the increase in behavioral concerns and a greater need for support services for both students and their families.
- To address the social/emotional challenges of our students, the district plans to hire an additional Social Worker and an additional Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) starting this fall.
