ASCA SNAPSHOT
Guidance Counselor vs. School Counselor
GUIDANCE COUNSELOR:
- School counseling is just over 100 years old
- School counseling began as “vocational guidance” served by teachers and administrators.
- Vocational guidance was a way prepare students to obtain a job
- Vocational guidance counselors were viewed as someone who sat in their office all day with nothing to do
SCHOOL COUNSELOR:
- 2001 Federal legislation acknowledged terminology switch from “guidance counselor” to “school counselor”
- A comprehensive program which focuses on the academic, career and social-emotional development of each and every student delivered by school counselors working closely and collaboratively with teachers, parents and administrators.
- Proactive and data-informed practices
