NOHL CANYON ROADRUNNER NEWS

Thank you to all of the families that were able to attend our Nohl Canyon movie night. Thank you to all the parents and volunteers that made this night a success. Thank you to the dads that were able to attend the Dad's club event on Saturday. I often maintain that the best part of Nohl Canyon is the people and that it is our strong community that make us great. I am reminded of this every time I have an opportunity to interact with our kiddos and our families. Thank you all for you partnership in this wonderful endeavor.

Last Friday, many of you may have noticed our new Nohl Canyon Dance Club led by Ms. Ayala welcoming students to school on Unity Day! Our Dance Club did a fantastic job and made for a great start to the day. In addition, below you will see pictures of the student-created Unity Day Posters. I am so proud of the work our student showed related to Kindness. Fantastic job Roadrunners!

On Thursday evening this coming week, please join us for Villa Park High School's feeder night at Fred Kelly stadium for a game and all the excitement in and around high school athletics. More information below.

Next week (10/28-11/1) will be Red Ribbon Week. We have an exciting week planned with some fun themed-dress opportunities (flyer and info below).

To make a friend you must be a friend. Friends are your family, teammates, classmates and workmates. They help you succeed and achieve your goals. Friendship is mutual. It is not a one way street. Good friends do good things for each other.

At the end of each month, students will be nominated by their teachers and receive principal recognition for their dedicated efforts.

Red Ribbon Week is coming next week: October 28th-November 1st

Red Ribbon Week is the nation's largest and longest-running drug-use prevention campaign. With our NC kiddos, we place the emphasis on positive choices and our RAD concept (Respectful, Accountable, Dedicated). In celebration of RRW we encourage students to:

The NC Yearbook cover contest is back!

Class Picture Day/School Picture Make-up Day took place ON Tuesday, October 1st.

Nohl Canyon Elementary School has continuing members for our Schoolsite Council (SCC) for the 2024-25 school year. Members of the SSC include the principal, classroom teachers, other staff members, and parents. Members of the SSC are elected by their peers to serve a two-year term. Our 23-24 members will be in the second year of their term this year. Elections for SSC will be held again next school year. Congratulations and a big thank you to our elected members!

Outdoor Ed week is coming, November 18 - 22. A special thanks to our 6th grade teachers (Ms. Donaldson, Ms. McCullough, Ms. Mai) for their support of this meaningful experience. Steve Benz from ECOS Institute will be with us on the evening of Thursday, September 12th to give a presentation about ECOS and the 6th Grade experience at Outdoor Ed. We hope you can join us.

Nohl Canyon uses a "Staggered" Start and dismissal to provide some relief with traffic. Supervision in front of school begins at 7:45 am. After dismissal, supervision ends at 2:40 pm. All students need to be picked up by 2:40 pm.

If you are interested in helping with our student drop-off or pick-up, we always welcome volunteers. Work as many or as few days as you are able, morning and/or afternoon. All helpers welcome! Stop by and talk with us in the morning or afternoon or let our Front office staff know if you are interested.

Thank you for making our parking lot procedures during drop-off and pick-up a safe and efficient machine. We serve a large number of vehicles in a short period of time.

Thank you for your continued help with a few critical items:

• Supervision is provided 15 minutes before the start of school and 15 minutes after student release. Any earlier or later drop-off or pick-up needs should contact CARES if added supervision is needed.
• Please remember our Lower lot (including angled spaces in front of the office) is Staff Only Parking. The lower entrance on Nohl Canyon RD is ENTRANCE ONLY in the Afternoon for Middle Lane traffic going to park in the FAR lot. Two-way use of this entrance presents a significant hazard to entering cars and pedestrian traffic.
• Please do not park in designated Reserved Spaces (Staff/CARES/Handicap).
• Please be kind to our parking lot volunteers. They make the whole thing work.
• Please ask your kiddos to walk when in front of school. Running children in the pick up area presents several hazards. Safety is our first priority.
• Trinity School Parking Lot is CLOSED for drop-off and pick-up parking.

• Parents, with respect to Trinity Pre-School and their families, we are not allowing Nohl Canyon families to park in the Trinity parking lot. Please follow this guideline and support us in keeping a positive community relationship with Trinity School. Trinity will often allow us to use their lot for special events but should not be used for drop-off or pick-up.
• Please remain clear of the Trinity lawn areas. Trinity lawns should not be used for students waiting for drop-off or pick-up. Students should always be picked up from our school site. If students are still here after 2:40pm, we bring them behind our school gates into our QUAD area for safety until parent pick-up. Please do not have your students wait at the Trinity site for pick-up.
• Please be sure to use crosswalks when crossing all major roads. Students being dropped off on Nohl Canyon Rd. and then proceeding across the street, presents a significant hazard to those students.
• Keep in mind, the Nohl Canyon Rd. entrance to our parking area is only to be used during afternoon pick-up and is limited to Middle Lane traffic that is pulling all the way through the lot to park in the back school lot.

Tops - Nohl Canyon Uniform shirts are to be worn each day. NC Spirit shirts are allowed throughout the week, along with scheduled themed days (Wednesday = College day). Nohl Canyon allows Free Dress on the final Friday of each month. Tops should be of a size to allow for freedom of movement to accommodate physical education and active, safe play with no undergarments showing.

Bottoms - Uniform bottoms are to be any type* of solid bottoms with no holes, stripes, or patterns. Colors are Black, Blue, Khaki, uniform plaid. Shorts should be of Bermuda style to help protect skin during active play. Bottoms should be of a size to allow for freedom of movement to accommodate physical education and active, safe play with no undergarments showing.

*Sweatpants not allowed

Shoes - Shoes should be closed toe with non-slip soles and allow for safe freedom of movement to accommodate physical education and active, safe play. Crocs are not allowed due to slip and support concerns during active play.

School Uniform Policy

Nohl Canyon is beginning to see more students carrying their own cell phones. Please discuss with your child the guidelines for cell phones/communication devices (watches) while at school:

1) NO CELL from BELL to BELL - cell phones need to be turned OFF and stored in students backpack from first bell to dismissal bell.

2) Students who need to contact parents/guardians are expected to come to the front office to make the phone call.

3) Students who do not follow the guidelines:

1st occurrence: warning - expected to place phone back in backpack

2nd occurrence: cell phone confiscated - Parent Pick-up in office
